Now that's sounds like Islam (But I agree that it's logically more consistent)I for one would think a rapist is worse than a guy who is seduced by his daughters when he's drunk. In fact I would say Lot was the victim in that situation. |

You seriously think Lot was the victim in that situation? Not to put too fine a point on it, things don't work when you're drunk enough to do your daughter, unless you don't mind that its your daughter. All I'm saying is I wouldn't trust this guy around MY daughters... (not that I have any) |

I should perhaps consult the text again, but I guess there's a reason why they had to get him drunk and not just say "Hey pop, let's repopulate Israel.". As far as I understood it they were over the age of consent and the ones to plan the whole thing, so clearly they are not victims in that situation. Oh, and I don't know how well things work dependent on how drunk you are, so I may have to stand corrected on that one, but I would guess the effect was different on different people? to quote the Bard: It ‘provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance.’ or something to that effect. See, I'm just wondering whose version of the story we're getting. "Those horrid girls, they got me drunk and they MADE me do it! Honest!" - I'm not buying it. |

Are you sure it has that effect on everyone? Many "acknowledged facts" regarding the human mating process are merely myths, exaggerated facts or only valid for some people. I have examples, but you have to PM me for those, and even that would be a little awkward. Considering Lot's history of trying to throw these very girls into an angry mob of rapists, I must admit that you have a convincing argument. You do assume that the story is told from Lot's perspective and not the girl, or some sort of objective observer (okay that would be weird). Anyway it wouldn't really make Lot more deserving of the title "righteous" in my mind at least. Also, to even have this debate we are assuming (at least for the sake of argument) that the Bible is an accurate description of these events. If we're allowed to disregard one story as being inaccurately described, why not do that with the other story as well? Edited by Concolor, 21 Oct 2009, 04:41 PM.

I'll agree that he doesn't seem like a particularly righteous man. But when Christians go on about context, this is an example. In the bit you mentioned 2 Peter 2:7-9, Peter was talking about delivering one (or a few) good people out of a bunch of bad ones. This might have been particularly resonant with the people at the time (and even know when they are the majority still do) who felt persecution. It seems very much like a "be firm, you'll be justified in the end... any minute now." In this example he also invokes Noah, who himself was a drunkard. Maybe Peter has picked some bad examples for this message. (incidentally, most biblical scholars agree that 2 Peter wasn't written by Peter (or at least the same person who wrote 1 Peter). I don't want people to get the impression that I think Peter is a poor judge of character or something. ---- edit. actually rereading the story of Noah and his kids, it gets me wondering if there is a pattern here. Noah and his sons, Lot and his daughters. This is worrying. Does Peter want me to escape a train wreck so I can do my kids? Edited by conradw, 22 Oct 2009, 01:18 AM.

@ARAZEC: After reading through at least some of our conversations I must admit I have not found anywhere where I have asked you that directly. I did find a place where you refer to your unfinished testimony as an explanation, though. I can ask you now: Why do you believe in God, and why do you think this is a good reason to believe in this particular God's existence? |

If you really want to understand my answer please read the storey of Nicodemus in the book of John first. I am not saying i was a cultured, educated well respected religious leader because this bloke actually represents all of us.

@ARAZEC: Remember that when you speak in parables and Bible-quotes you leave very much up to my interpretation. And I think we have established that my interpretation of things is quite different from yours. It is my impression that you are trying to show me why you think the God of the Bible is cool. And that this caused you to believe in him a part of reality. I do not think these things present him as cool at all. And I also see no link between coolness and probability of being real: Batman is way cooler than I am, but I'm a lot more real than he is. |

the God of the bible is very cool-in fact he is friggin so awsome ! He is good he knows me !!!!! i am not speaking in parables or bible quotes -i just asked you to look up the definition of basic words in the dictionary they have to do with how i found God-the truth of not only that there is a God but why Jesus Christ is the reedemer of man. Its part of how i came to believe in God, and to think this is a good reason to believe in this particular God's existence. Lets get to the crux of it-the GOSPEL...... |

Sorry ARAZEC, I may be fast-forwarding a bit I looked up the words and immediately started trying to find out what your argument would be. My brain is tuned for discourse so it's sometimes a bit hard to just sit back and listen when I think I'm onto something
