OK, so I am making a map of Rain Genetics so that we know where people are. I'm using Autodesk Inventor, a 3-D modeling program, to do this so that we have horizontal and vertical positioning possible. I'm using a 1:10 scale, that is, 1 inch in the model = 10 feet on the map.

Now, we already know that Rain Genetics has an outer wall and at least two buildings, one with a control tower/communications mast.

Questions I need answered:

  • How thick is the outer wall?
  • How tall is the outer wall?
  • How many entrances are there, besides the main entrance?
  • How large is the area inside the wall?
  • How much area does A Building cover?
  • How many stories tall is A Building, not including the tower?
  • How many stories tall is the tower?
  • How much area does the tower cover?
  • How many stories tall is the communications mast?
  • How are the B Building and A Building positioned relative to each other?
  • How much area does B Building cover?
  • How many stories tall is B Building?

I'll add to this list as things come up. I will accept input from anyone, but I reserve final judgment on measurements. Also, I will not model any area over 500 square meters.

As Giul is GM, any measurement he gives me I will consider final and not up for discussion.

The map will be posted as soon as I finish it. There will be tags for locations on the 3D map, but they will be limited to what building a character is in and what story he is at.

I will also create 2D maps for the inside areas of the buildings, to aid in navigation, etc.

This is what has been decided so far:
YARD: 500ft by 600 ft (30,000 square ft), measuring from inside surface of outer wall
WALL: 3ft thick
BUILDINGS:
A Building - Labs/Storage:
F6: Guard tower walkway access
F5: Guard tower base/security checkpoint
F4-F1: Labs (There'll be a large 4 story lab used for testing/observation/subject detention. Remember, Rain Genetics is eeeebul.)
Also will have adjoining 2-story security checkpoint/guard barracks/Security Control Room.
B1: Quartermaster/Scientific Storage
B2: Equipment Storage/Access Tunnels

B Building - Residential/Offices
F6: Guard tower walkway access
F5: Guard tower base/security checkpoint
F4-F3: Residential
F2-F1: Offices
Main: Double-height Atrium/Offices
B1: Storage
B2: Garage/Access Tunnels

C Building - Library and Supercomputer
F2: Mainframe Terminal
F1: Library Access/Mainframe Security Checkpoint
B1: Maintenance
B2: Maintenance/Access Tunnels

D Building - Power Plant
F1: Power Control Room/Security Checkpoint
B1: Fuse Room/Maintenance
B2: Maintenance/Access Tunnels

Rain Genetics Compound Features
Cafeteria: Two, large one in B Building and small one in A Building.
Workout rooms: Somewhere on the residential levels of B Building. Also, the yard is large enough that people can take a run around the inside of the walls for exercise. That's 2km or 1.2 miles.
Library/Supercomputer: I'm thinking more that the supercomputer would be in it's separate high-security building, with a low-security annex that acts as a library...think Star Wars-style library, no books, just terminals.
Terminals: Scattered throughout the buildings, fairly densely in A Building (one or two in each lab, depending on its size), and a little less dense in B Building. C Building would have a mainframe terminal.
Gun Cage: This'd be in A Building, on B1 with the Quartermaster.
Employee Parking: Some in the garage on B2 in B Building, but the majority is outside in the yard.

The rain genetics is a large complex filled with offices and labs, with many floors and security clearances needed, it should be very large, with only the basest of lights working, because the complex is being run on generator power as the main electrical grid was taken out during the hysteria. I would say the group is on the ground floor where the security is the most lenient, I'm not sure how many floors it will be, but i'll be sure that you climb the stairs fast enough.

hope this helps a bit..

Well, it'll help for the 2D maps, but "large" and "very large" aren't very specific. "Many" isn't very specific either.

Mostly, I'm asking for opinions on how large it should be, how tall, etc., etc.

I'd say four floors with guard towers.
Maybe a 10 lab base with each lab being something of 20 by 22 feet.
Offices and residential areas above that, with the third floor for storage and the fourth for the guard towers.
The wall should be about 3 feet thick, with the inner courtyard surrounding the building being... Something of 500 By 600?
Or maybe a bit more reasonable.
At least two floors of stairs for each level with a service stair and elevators, but not working.
A warehouse somewhere on premise...

Anything else?

Alright, sounds good & large. I'll work on it some when I don't have homework.

Warehouse will be up for discussion once A building and B Building are finished.

By floors of stairs, you mean flights, right?

Right now I'm working on a general shape 3D model, I'm NOT modeling the inside in 3D, THAT will be as 2D maps.

Actually. third floor as storage doesn't make sense. This is a scientific installation, what if you drop some acid on the floor?

Also, it wouldn't make much sense to be carrying chemicals through residential/office areas.

So, here's the floor breakdown:

A Building - Labs/Storage:
F6: Guard tower walkway access
F5: Guard tower base/security checkpoint
F4-F1: Labs (There'll be a large 4 story lab used for testing/observation/subject detention. Remember, Rain Genetics is eeeebul.)
Also will have adjoining 2-story security checkpoint/guard barracks.
B1: Quartermaster/Scientific Storage
B2: Equipment Storage/Access Tunnels

B Building - Residential/Offices
F6: Guard tower walkway access
F5: Guard tower base/security checkpoint
F4-F3: Residential
F2-F1: Offices
Main: Double-height Atrium/Offices
B1: Storage
B2: Garage/Access Tunnels

I'll be doing the 2D map of the yard first, to help get an idea of spacing. We have 30,000 square feet to work with inside the yard, but much of it will probably be taken up by plaza and park areas. Once I get an idea of how much space each building so far will take up I'll post how much room we have left to work with.

Instead of making single offices...i'd make chained cubicle office workspaces. I know oyu said you woouldn't do more than 500 sq m but...this is more realisitic. Obviously you'd have manager offices and other rooms off of it and such.

Well, of course there'd be single offices and cubicle farms. F2-F1 in B Building is cubicle farms and some single offices, while the upper level of the atrium has large single person offices.

I do know what I am doing, I've made maps for RPGs before.

Also, 500 square meters is a little on the low side now that I think of it; I'm doing a yard area that is 30,000 square feet which comes out to 9144 square meters.

I'll update the first post in a minute or two, I'm still working on the 2D maps of the yard and first floor of each building, I'll get a start on the 3D yard and outer walls this weekend.

No, no, it's fine Luemas. I'll try the 500*600 foot first, then if that doesn't work I'll do my 500*500 meter.

Wait...hold on...

*crunches the numbers*

okay, 500 feet by 500 feet is 250,000 square feet.

500 feet by 600 feet is...oops, dropped a zero...300,000 square feet

500 meters is 1640.4 feet

1640.4*1640.4=2,690,912 square feet.

500 meters square is 250 meters on a side, or 820.2 feet on a side...times itself...which is 672,728 feet square.

Anyways, Luemas, I'll be going with your measurement as they are well under my limit.

They did extensive animal testing and some human testing. And they've got a supercomputer. They probably also generate their own power so that they're not vulnerable to a blackout. That power would be off now, but they could get it back online.

Things to think about: cafeteria, workout rooms, library, computer terminals, gun cage, employee parking...
