Thought I'd post this to explain my posts in the Debate section. This video more or less describes the approach I try to follow when examining information and arguments I meet. I realize I may not always make it, but this is what I'm aiming for. The video is slightly patronizing, but then again so am I at times ![]() WARNING: Contains obvious propaganda in favor of the scientific method and critical thinking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T69TOuqaqXI |

Patronizing: To talk to others in a way that makes it sound like the one you're talking to is not as smart as you are. Example: If I say to Kari: "I see that this may be a little advanced for you, let me explain it in a simpler way so you can understand it." Then I make it sound like Kari is not as smart as I am. Basically it's a little like treating other people a bit more like children ("patronizing" comes from the same root as "father", so you're acting like you're someones dad). This can be used intentionally as a debating technique, to make yourself look smarter. It could also be an unintentional effect, if you try to explain something to someone who already knows what you're explaining and the other one thinks your just trying to make them look stupid even though you just tried to make sure he/she understood what you meant. Propaganda: Kinda like advertising, only in stead of trying to sell stuff propaganda tries to make you believe in the message that is presented. Often used during wars to make people support their country against other countries. Examples from the second world war: "Don't listen to radio broadcasts from England, it is all lies made up by the Jews to take over Europe.", "Don't talk loudly about military secrets, Nazi spies may hear it and use it against our boys at the front." Propaganda can be good or bad depending on what the intention is, but it's usually a bit "over the top" in that it is often presenting everything as "black and white" (like: you're either with us or against us) in order to make people agree with the message and think it's important to follow it. In this particular case I use the expression "propaganda" a bit ironically because I actually think the video is a lot more balanced than actual propaganda, but the style is very similar to propaganda from the 1950s and 1960s (in my opinion). |

Not much I guess. It seems like rationality is not as controversial in the Off Topic section as it is in Debates
