Also, as there are plenty of Atheists who are idiots there are also plenty of Christians who are idiots.

If you use the broad definitions of...

Atheist = A person who do not hold a belief in a specific personal deity.
Christian = One who believes in a personal God who had a son, Jesus Christ, through which is found the path to salvation.

...then each of these groups are going to entail a LOT of different people who believe in extremely different things within the same group.

exactly, out of all of the atheists, a good 80% is reasonable, but the 20% that burns crosses is the only one looked at. same with cults and christianity.
