See, this is the thing though. Everyone I meet is either very straight, very gay, or very bi. With the exception of one bi guy who was complaining that he wasn't sleeping with enough women compared to men, there doesn't seem to be much variation within these groups. What I'm suggesting with my point is take a guy with all the qualities you look for in a woman who wants to do more than kiss you on the cheek romantically and as long as you're aware he's a guy, you will have mostly the same reaction to if he was any other guy. I'm happy to admit that this may have just as much to do with cultural prejudices as anything biological, but then I'm sure you would agree with me that sexuality is always an insoluble mixture of nature and nurture. |

@conradw: Our anecdotal evidence seems slightly conflicting. IMO we need more data on this one. I do agree about your nature/nurture-point though. |

After doing a bit of reading, I came across one approach which includes more than one dimension, and I felt made slightly more sense than the often quoted Kinsey scale. I'm yet to find any actual empirical evidence for these dimensions, but in the absence of that I feel that it is a little bit more intuitive, and probably finds more common ground. It has a continuum in three dimensions: "sexual orientation (male-attracted, bisexual, or female-attracted), preferred sexual behavior (passive, no preference, or active), and gender characteristics (feminine, intermediate, or masculine)" I took this from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranian - feel free to check it out. I'm not so sure about a lot of stuff on that page, but I am happy to accept this 3D approach as slightly more intuitively accurate. If you guys care, that would make me a female-attracted, masculine person (i'll fight you if you disagree!!!) with a behaviour favouring active (except when I'm feeling lazy ). If that's waaaay too much information, I can see your point entirely.

Okay THAT was too much info ![]() That 3D-continuum made sense to me, but I can't see how my suggestion for a continuum is not just a 1D-projection of this continuum. |

I could probably give a reason, but I want to make sure I understand you correctly. This single continuum would reflect all three of these dimensions? So a person like me might be at one end, while my effeminate gay friend would be at the other end? its difficult to say why gender preference, and sexual behaviour (activity/passivity) should be aligned. While we might assume that sexual passivity is a more feminine trait and preference for women is a more masculine trait, this isn't necessarily the case and obscures meaning (and in my opinion obliterates the point) of the continuum. Depending on the weighting (or "orientation") of the factors you have, you will end up with a pattern of (semi-)distinct groups arising: sexually active masculine men who prefer women, sexually sexually active masculine men who have no gender preference, active masculine men who prefer men, sexually active masculine women ... ... ... and so on. While the notion that it is a continuum is perfectly valid, it isn't just one continuum that describes human sexual behaviour. Because of this, we have broad patterns emerging, which we, being human, love to categorise (and unfortunately, discriminate). I realise I've strayed from my initial position greatly, and now I'm ready to accept that sexual orientation may be a continuum, more or less how Kinsey described it, but it is actually the meshwork of different factors that puts us in different groups. |

Ah, I didn't mean that the one dimension should cover all of them, just the gay-bi-straight part. When you do a mathematical projection into a lower dimension, you completely ignore the dimensions you cut away and simply pull the points down on the line. What I meant was that I think my description of the gay-bi-straight continuum was exactly a description of one of the three dimensions in your 3D-model. What I was (mathematically) trying to get at was that I was right and you finally realized it, nyah nyah nayh (QED) ![]() The rest of your post I agree with. |
