Please comment! :D TORI; RIPPED
2nd installment in the TORI series

No mask, no matter how thick, can hide emotion.
A smiling face painted on plastic can be as melancholy as a crying figure huddled in the center of his swarthy friends.
To be able to sense emotion-The most important sense of all. To know when to stop talking and to start listening or vice versa will change how your life flows.
We are all tiny, wrapped in our own troubles, our own lives, when we are just half a spec in a pile of millions.
Those who realize this have usually shortened lives-The suicide rate goes up every day.
Why?
Because humans need to feel important.
We cannot thrive unless we are the center of attention.
To be ignored is more torturous than being lashed with a whip of skin from your family.
Those who realize they are nothing in the middle of more nothing are usually the outsiders. Social status, whether being the biting woman who complains about your music or being the singer of the music, effects who you are.
You don’t need to be popular, but you need people to love you.
Some of us people are fine with our status, maybe we are not popular, but we have friends. Then there are those who unfortunately seclude themselves from society and don’t let people know them for who they really are.
Love, whether friendship or something even stronger, is an expectation that all people, even those who isolate themselves, have.
When you fall in love, you dream about the person. Daydreams, nightmares, visions. Things that could happen-kisses in the rain, witty comebacks in public.
Those dreamed things can be disillusioned by the movies we watch and only sporadically happen.
How do our expectations suddenly turn into something we believe will really happen? What happens when we think we know the future and it changes on us?
That is why expectations can kill you.

Jared bit my ear and I pulled away.
(Rejection)
I, Tori, would not suffer from him after already being killed by him.
I stood up, my ebony hair flailing like the evil Queen Trella’s.
I felt powerful.
After being thrown into my own nightmare and having Grainett take me, and have Jared tell me he was Moriq when I knew it had to be a lie, I would not suffer this.......but could I get away?
“You will not hurt me anymore.”
Jared stared at me, his eyes flashing, smiling.
(Doubtful)
“Because I know who you are now.”
“Yes,” he replied, smirking, “I am Moriq, the one you loved.”
I smiled.
“Moriq is with the Angel of Death.”
Jared was silent. “Xavier?” he growled
“See? If you were new to this world, you wouldn’t know about Xavier. And Moriq knew everything about the underworld, therefore, you cannot be him because he is a veteran.”
Jared growled loudly.
Suddenly he shrank into a skinny form; Grainett, staring me in the face.
“I hate you.” he growled. “I hate you so much.”
“Why? I can help you.”
I smiled darkly.
(Unknowing)
It was Grainett’s turn to smile. “Because now I have to kill you.”
(Gasping)
“I’m already dead.” I objected.
“Well, I can certainly erase your memory.”
I stepped backwards. “Why would you do that?”
Grainett stood up. “Because you’ve half solved the mystery.”
I glared at him. “You can’t be Jared. You’ve been with me this whole time, Jared must have just died, unless-”
Grainett grinned, and held up a hand.
“It’s terrible how I have to do this to you again.”
(Gone)

I awoke suddenly, one thing popping into my mind right away.
One name.
(Moriq)
I looked around at my surroundings, and fond myself in some sort of wet cave.
Slimy.
I lifted my hand and shook off a film of goop, it splattering on a dark wall.
(Not Alone)
This really is disgusting. came a familiar voice.
I looked over at where the voice was coming from. My eyes adjusted slightly to the darkness and I saw a large, flaccid figure.
I gasped.
“....Moriq?”
‘How did you know?”
I climbed over to him, slipping onto my knees on the the damp ground. I huddled up next to the warm but surprisingly pale figure.
(Recognition)
“What’s happening?”
“I’m waiting for Xavier. I see you came to save me, as you said you would.....”
“Well, not exactly. How do we get out of here?”
“I knew you’d be coming, so I stayed right here so you wouldn’t get lost. Now that you ARE here, let’s go.”
Moriq grabbed my hand and we stood up, trying to keep our balance on the slippery ground.
“The exit is over there.”
I peered into the darkness.
“I don’t see anything.”
Moriq pulled me along, and seeing my gloveless hands reminded me of something.
“Moriq, don’t you now remember who you are?”
Moriq frowned.
“Well, I did. But I’m here now, aren’t I?”
“Huh?”
“What is your name?”
(Straining)
I stared at him.
“I can’t remember.”
“Tori. It’s Tori. When sent here, you slowly forget things, but at least remember that.”
I nodded, stumped, then stumbled towards the cold exit.
Suddenly, a rush of air blew my hair up, like we were falling, but I managed to stay standing.
I felt dizzy, and fell onto Moriq’s hard torso.
(Heat)
I yelped as a loud noise erupted. A warm pounding.
I looked up at Moriq as we slowed.
“Moriq, I think you have a heartbeat.”
He didn’t blink.
“So do you.”
I gasped and put a finger up to my neck, feeling my pulse.
I smiled, remembering how my mother used to do this when I was sick, her smooth hand brushing against my cheek..
Moriq’s hand slipped down from my arm to my own chilled hand as we stopped moving. A light shone in the distance.
(Trust)
Moriq strolled with me towards it, as if we were casually walking.
“Moriq,” I asked, looking down at my ungloved hand again, “If you can’t remember who you are at the moment, and I’m touching you-”
“Were you with Grainett?”
“Yes.”
“Then he most likely took your powers for himself.”
(Regret)
“So he wasn’t just turning into Jared to scare me, he really WAS Jared.....”
“Most likely.”
I panicked. “But how will I escape without my powers-”
“You do not need powers if you are blessed. If you are blessed, and you can escape, special skills or not.”
“I’m blessed?”
“You’re sane and unharmed, aren’t you?”
“But Moriq, you are sane and unharmed....”
Moriq inhaled.
“Maybe not as sane as you think.”

We were getting closer to the light. Moriq’s face was serious again as I stayed silent.
“We’re going to see a friend, Simon.”
“Can he help us?”
“SHE can probably help us, yes.”
(Questioning)
I was taken back. “Simon’s a girl?”
“Simon’s a woman. She’s easily irked, so do not tick her off. Please.”
I tried to picture dark, angry Simon in my head. I shuddered.
I inhaled and stepped into icy sunshine.

We found ourselves in a bright, freezing square, an office building. Moriq grabbed my arm and pulled me inside the structure.
A heated breeze blew my hair back.
(Ardor)
Moriq dragged me to a crowded elevator. I found a cool corner and braced myself for my meeting with Simon.
There was a loud ringing noise and the elevator door opened. This was the first time since my arrival I had been in a somewhat normal area, but something was just not right.
(Fervor)
We exited the elevator and strolled quickly to a hallway. Moriq rushed along, pulling me behind him. I dodged poison ivy plants potted along the hallway.
We came to a little cubicle and entered it.
It was scorching, hotter than the rest of the building, and I yearned for the uncomfortably freezing cave again.
(Wrong)
There was a lamp on a little desk, creating a shadow to stretch into the corner. A figure sat there.
“Simon?” called Moriq.
The figure stood up and stepped into the light.
I bit my lip, not feeling it.
Artificial light spilled onto the woman’s face and I could see her features.
(Surprising)
She was extremely short, thin and curvy. Her cherry red lips formed a smile, brightening her ice blue eyes. Her sandy hair whispered and moved like Trella’s hair, but instead of disgusting and frightening it was calming.
Simon grinned and greeted us.
I felt a pang of jealousy towards this pretty female. I ground my teeth and closed my arm around Moriq.
It seemed Moiq didn’t even notice her beauty, as if it were an illusion. He did notice me tense up, though. He leaned over and whispered in my ear.
“Envy is a sin.”
(Angry)
Like he could be talking. He had a perfect, muscular structure and flawless glacial skin.
This made me recognize the fact that since the time I had arrived here, nobody had been ugly, no matter how evil they seemed to be.
(Jealousy)
Why did I feel like the the only ugly one, the only human one?
Moriq spoke to the girl.
“I need to speak with Xavier.”
“Why?”
“I need to get out of here.”
The eerie smile could not escape this woman’s face.
“Okay, I’ll see what I can do. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you down here. Were you fighting with Grainett again?”
Moriq nodded, smiling kindly.
“Yeah, he’s causing trouble again.”
Simon looked over at me. “Because of her?” she asked.
Moriq glanced over at me. I scowled.
“Kinda. This is Tori.”
The woman smiled at me even bigger.
(Wrong)
“Nice to meet you, Tori.”
“Nice to meet you too, Simon.”
Simon sat at the desk, her red lips pulling on her cheeks, creating dimples.
(Wrong)
She pulled open a little computer and started typing.
Moriq stopped smiling and turned to me.
“If we see Xavier, he can get us out of here Or he could tell us how to qualify as an A.O.D.”
I sniffed. The air smelled burnt.
(Wrong)
“I can tell you where he is right now, but he cannot come to meet you.”
“Where is he?”
“He is on the other side of Grahtze River.”
The woman put in a tiny earpiece and pressed a button on the computer.
“It seems he is with Grainett at the moment. Are you sure you want to go?”
Moriq nodded again.
“We’ll be fine.”
He walked out, seeming reasonably confident.
I looked at Simon. She was unsurprisingly still beaming at me.
(Wrong)
I stared at her.
I took a chance.
“Are you happy?”
Simon’s smile fell to the floor.
Literally.
There was a growling noise as Simon grew twice her original size, her pretty face transforming into a grim expression.
I gasped, and stepped backwards. Simon roared and I was pulled out of the room by an icy hand.
(Wrong)
I stumbled down the hall, pulled by an invisible figure. The light flickered, and in the moment of darkness I saw a ghostly glowing person gripping me - Moriq. He slowly changed into his real, full self. The light lowly turned back on, and I could see and feel Moriq run faster as he disappeared again.
(Mist)
He zipped into the elevator with me, and hit the light button. The artificial light in the elevator faded and Moriq became a solid being.
Moriq grabbed my other hand and shook me.
“I TOLD you not to make her mad!”
I blinked slowly, confused.
“What-Why did you disappear in the light and not the dark? What happened to Simon? What’s going on?”
Moriq shook me harder.
“Don’t you get it? We’re in Hell, Tori. How can you not know this? Beauty is an illusion! Light is an illusion! There isn’t anything beautiful about the darkness!”
I was starting to get it. The elevator was slowly coming to a stop.
“Then how come everyone I’ve met here is beautiful?”
“Because darkness has power. Not as much as light, but it has power. Why would it let itself be ugly? It puts on the mask of beauty so you will be attracted.”
I looked at handsome Moriq and saw him differently somehow. I pulled away.
Moriq turned around as the elevator door opened with a ding.
“Brace yourself,” he muttered.
Light spilled in to the elevator.
(Masked)

The office was empty. Moriq stepped into the bright room, turning into a fog. He motioned for me to come along before disappearing completely.
I walked forward and began to head for the exit when a thought hit me and forced itself up my throat.
“Moriq, why am I not disappearing?”
Moriq looked back at me as he stepped into the dark square outside the door.
“How do you know you aren’t?”
I just stared at him, with a sickening feeling I didn’t know anything anymore.

I sprinted from the bright building, right as it became painfully white with heated light.
I rushed up to completely visible Moriq and quickly walked along with him.
“Where are we going?”
“The Ghatze River.”
I grabbed his arm, slightly letting myself forget the talk in the elevator to stay cool against his icy skin and away from the fiery building behind us.
He started whispering something familiar.
“To walk along the scorched out line”
I recognized the song right away.
It was the melody playing on my walkman when Jared came for me.
I continued for him.
“To brace yourself against the odds.”
“To try with all your might to help your friends”
“You’d think they’d all come back for you.”
“But life just doesn’t work that way.”
“One day it will all be great.”
Moriq breathed in and sighed.
“And yet the darkness grows.”
I bit my lip, remembering the sad last verse to the tune.
I looked up at Moriq. “How did you know that?”
Moriq looked straight ahead. “Because-”
“Help!”
(Confused)
We looked around, trying to comb the flat land with our eyes for the person responsible for this outburst. Nobody was in sight.
A greeting made us jump.
I yelped and turned around. A teenage-looking boy with freckles stood near Moriq.
“Hello.” he repeated.
Moriq’s gruff voice made him sound like a flea. “Are you well? Do you need help?”
The teen laughed. “No, I needed your attention. Hi, I’m Zeahn.”
Zeahn held out his hand, and polite Moriq shook it with a growl. I could tell he didn’t like this immature boy already.
(Jealousy)
“I’m Moriq, and this is Tori. What do you want?”
“I want to come with you!” grinned Zeahn. He flipped around, showing us a backpack. “I’m packed and ready!”
Moriq looked uneasily at me. I nodded, understanding. Moriq opened his u to say something.
“And I can totally protect you guys! Even you, big man. And I swear I’ll take care of your lovely lady friend here. I have an orange belt-I used to have an orange belt in karate. And also, I have this sack, and it’s like, really strong, so you can-”
Moriq put his hands over his ears. “Okay okay okay! Why do you want to come with us? We’re on a very serious trip and we don’t want anyone dragging us down!”
Zeahn jumped up and talked quickly.
“I won’t drag you down I’m light I promise I just want to come because Grainett you know Grainett I heard he can help me get out of here and I really am a good boy trust me just look at me-”
(Trying)
Moriq glanced at me. I hung my head. He turned back to Zeahn.
“Okay, you can come.”
Zeah jumped up again.
“Oh boy! Hi I’m Zeahn but you can call me cousin people like to call me cousin sometimes crazy cousin Zeahn ha I guess it’s less embarrassing for them when I knock stuff over I’m so clumsy sometimes hey is there a bathroom on the way I need to fix my hair it feels like it’s messed up-”
Moriq groaned and walked forward. I sighed and followed him as Zeahn chatted my ear off.
(Mistake)

We came to a tiny waterfall. Icy crystals fell from the rocks and crashed to the hot ground, melting into water.
Zeahn yelped with joy and ran towards it, pulling an empty bottle from his backpack. He filled the bottle with the shimmering water, then poured a packet of something purple in it. He shook the bottle until all the water was violet.
I coughed and looked at Moriq, who for once had a puzzled look on his face.
Zean held up the bottle. “This is my purple drink.”
“....I.....see......” said Moriq. I choked back a laugh.
(Laughter?)
“What does it do?”
Zeahn smiled. “It gives me powers!”
Moriq rolled his eyes. “Great.”
I let my laughter come out.
It rang and echoed through the empty land, vibrating, dripping farther and farther way until it sounded distant as the hills in the distance.
There was a rumbling.
I looked at Moriq and could easily read the expression on his face as he stepped backwards, grabbing Zeahn and pulling him with him.
What have you done?

I gasped as a black, moist mist started crawling up our legs. Moriq shouted at me, a high pitched noise making it pointless to even try to talk in a normal tone.
“A smile is like a siren,” he said, pushing towards me and grabbing my arm as the fog turned to muck. “Death is the only thing you can’t laugh off.”
(Slime)
Zeahn looked down and scooped up the thickening concoction. “This is a very odd dream.” he stated as the ooze slipped lifelessly between his fingers.
Moriq looked over at him. “What dream?”
The soldifying ink came up to my pelvis. I whined and tugged at Moriq, who was intensely interested in his conversation with Zeahn.
(Disagreement)
Zeahn chuckled. “This one is so realistic, so long......I’ve never had such a detailed dream in my life.”
Moriq growled. “Are you stupid? Do you really think this is all a dream? We need to get out of this situation. If you thought this was a dream, why did you have to latch onto us and follow us?”
I tugged on his arm again, but he didn’t respond. The slime came up to my belly button. My skin tingled dangerously.
Moriq raised his voice louder. “Well?”
“Even dreams have points to them!” yelled Zeahn. “Why not play along?”
“Because!” shouted Moriq. “You end up endangering the actual sane people!”
The muck crept up to my chest.
(Choking)
“Moriq!” I shouted. “We have to get out of here!”
“Are you refusing to believe you’re dead to help yourself? Well let me tell you; It will only hurt you in the end!”
Zeahn growled at Moriq. “Why would I be sent to a place like this after I die? I’m a grade A student!”
“Are you saying you’re better than us?” challenged Moriq. “That we were bad enough to be sent here? I’m sure you’re no saint, either-”
The slime reached my neck. The two men beside me were about a foot and a half taller than me, and somehow failed to notice the rising danger.
I screamed.
And suddenly, the disgusting black ooze, along with the argument, was gone.

We looked around frantically, trying to search out the savior who freed us from our nasty confinement. My eyes fell upon a man, dressed in a suit and tie. He smiled at us.
(Different)
“Hello!" he called, walking up to us. Bits of sand created a trail behind him as he walked.
Moriq glanced over at me, then at the man, suspiciously. "And who might you be?" "I'm Leauts, the riverkeeper." he replied, bowing slightly. He held out his hand to me. "Good to be of your assistance." I smiled. "Charmed. I'm Tori." Moriq stepped slightly in front of me. "I'm Moriq. And this is cousin Zeahn." Leauts nodded, bit his lip, then leaned over to Moriq and asked, "Who's cousin is he?" Moriq looked over at Zeahn, who was trying to balance his purle drink on top of his head. He shrugged. Leauts nodded again, then, with a start, chirped, "Well, I'm afraid I must go on. I have a party to attend. You may come if you'd like. The more, the merrier." I opened my mouth to oblige, but Moriq growled, "Is it near the river?" "Why," said Leauts, "It's right on the river!" "Well then, why not?" exclaimed Moriq, folowing the already walking Leauts quickly. Zeahn followed, balancing the purple drink on his head, and I sighed and sprinted to catch up.

It was closer than I thought. After a bit of walking, we came to the river. It was pretty dirty, but on the other side, many people drank from it. There was no ferry or way to get across, other than swim, which apparently, judging by the screaming, many people had failed at. Leauts led us to a little tent near the bank. It was dark inside, but I could still see the desk and an old phonograph in the corner, playing music I hadn't ever heard. It sounded not bad, but....mischievous? Dirty? Vulgar? I felt like my parents would come in any second to ground me, I felt like I would get in trouble for listening to it. Leauts spread out his arms, and said, "Welcome to my party." There weren't any people in sight, but suddenly all was quiet and a tall figure came up behind Leauts and curled its arms around him like a thirsty vine. I could then see it was a woman, thin, with pale skin and wild brown hair. ( Envy) She spoke, tightening her grip on Leauts. He smiled naughtily. "Poor Mrs. Dallaway, always throwing parties to hide the obvious silence." Leauts grinned and flipped around, grabbing the hands of the woman playfully. She giggled and tried to get away, snarled flirtily. Leauts said, "Let me introduce my beautiful girlfriend, Carnice." Moriq smiled. "Charmed." I glanced over at him, then back to the couple, who had pushed the desk out of the way and were sitting on the ground. Carnice smiled up at me and patted the spot beside her. I sat down, and Moriq and Zeahn settled down next to me. (Uncomfortable) Carnice lit a cigarette and inhaled. She exhaled the smoke into my face. "So," she began, addressing me and my two friends, "How did sugarcubes like you get into a place like this?" "Like what?" growled Moriq, staring at her cigarette. She chuckled. "I don't really know. None of us-at least, me and Zeahn-know. That's kinda what we're trying to find out." I replied for him. Carnice laughed. "Cute. An expedition, I see." "Not really....." I stared at the two calm figures before me. I turned to Carnice. "What about you? How did you...end up here?" Carnice laughed and pulled out something from her pocket. It glistened, and she held it against her wrist. "I...did...this..." she chirped as she sliced the object across her skin, painting a red line. I screamed, and she stared at me. "Don't do that!" I squealed. (Pain) "Why?" she replied, looking down at the cut. It dripped onto the carpet. "It doesn't hurt." She stared, blank faced at it, as if she was remembering something long ago. "It feels kind of nice, actually." This confused me. And so I asked her, "Why do you do this to yourself?" She inhaled the smoke draping from her cigarette and replied, "We hurt ourselves to live. We hurt ourselves to know we are still alive." (Survive) "But what if one day you go to far, and end up not only hurting yourself, but tearing yourself from life altogether?" I interrogated. Carnice smiled and said, "How do you know that is not our aim?"

I turned to Leauts, who was hanging his head, playing with a shoelace. I asked him, "What have you done?" (Guilt) He blushed, his black eyes glinting. "I got lonely," he said sadly, "When you get lonely, you get desperate. When you get desperate, you let anyone be your friend." I nodded and bit my lip, turning to Moriq. He stared blankly ahead, then glanced at me. "I'll speak to you later." he mouthed. I looked up to see Carnice and Leauts grinning like maniacs. Moriq stood. "What's the hurry?" inquired Leauts, standing quickly, not even close to being as tall as Moriq. Moriq backed away slowly, grabbing my hand. Leauts chuckled. We don't bite." Moriq growled, "Thank you for letting us stay," he pulled up Zeahn, who choked on his half swallowed purple drink, "But we must be going. Leauts, if you could escort us to the edge of the river, we'd be very grateful." (Resistance) Leauts frowned. "But the party has just started!" Zeahn turned to Moriq. " I was having a good time." "Aw, see?" commented Carnice, standing up to grasp Zeahn's arm. "Why not stay for a while?" Moriq whispered to me, "When I say 'run' you run, okay?" I understood. "What about Zeahn?" (Love) Moriq sighed. "Do we really need him?" "I like him!" "Don't." Leauts laughed. "Well?" "I'm afraid we have to run." snarled Moriq, letting go of my hand. I inhaled and flipped around, and ran to the edge of the river. It took me half a minute to get there, yet Moriq was already in a boat, pulling up the anchor. I saw Zeahn far away, trying to shake loose from Carnice's grasp, but it seemed as though they were connected. I felt pity for him, he was only a boy still..... (Paternal) "Moriq..." I hurriedly whined, "Please." Moriq groaned, understanding, and turned to face the tent. "Carnice!" he shouted. She stared over at him. Moriq just stood, glaring. Soon, Carnice's eyes went blank and her claws loosened their grip on Zeahn. He scrambled away and scootered to our boat in a flurry of the purple liquid of his energy drink and the green fabric of his jacket. Moriq grasped the oar for the boat and began to mumble a hurried message, over and over. It seemed as if he understood something I didn't. (Fear) He whispered; "Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they confort me." A black smudge in the sky whizzed past, and Moriq cursed as he pushed us away from shore. Zeahn panted. "What was that?!?" Moriq growled. "I forgot about Carnice's power." I jumped. "Power?" Moriq sighed. "Everyone here has a power. Carnice can transport easily, so can I. I can also hypnotise. Simon has the power of wrath to guide her, she can transform into a monster practically when she's angry. Xavier is the big guy of this world, he decides who stays and who goes under. Trella and Corrin can shapeshift and read into your past, like Grainett. Grainett, now that he's been with you, knows who he is and can tell others. He is the most powerful." "What about me?" Zeahn and I piped up. Moriq stared into the red, coppery distance. "You'll have to find that out yourselves." (Bump) We hit the other shore, cracking the boat. Moriq hopped onto land, and held out his hand for me to grab and follow. I looked behind me. Zeahn was jumping ashore, but someone was grabbind the boat from underneath the water. I screamed. Suddenly, there was a frightening noise.....unhappy laughter. Zealous laughter. Recognizable laughter.

Moriq snarled as a murky form pulled itself up by the boat's edge. It stared at me with big, white eyes. It shook and Grainett stood up in a puddle of filth, rising taller and taller. He grinned, looked down at me with dark, frenzied eyes. With evil eyes, with intimidating eyes. Grainett looked down at me with Jared's eyes. He blinked them away. "Hello, my darling." (Confused) I grabbed Moriq's hand and rushed behind his sculpted torso. Grainett chuckled. His eyes narrowed. "Hello, Moriq." Moriq nodded politely. How could he be here? In this dark world? How could a demon be such a...saint? Moriq spoke. "Where is Xavier?" Grainett's eyebrows lifted. "Leaving me so soon? I just dropped you here......." Moriq snapped, "We didn't want to come here in the first place." Grainett pouted. "Don't be cruel. I just wanted to have a little chat withn Tori after the......incident, and you were getting in my way. And Tori was acting a little bitchy, I must say. Trying to use powers she did not have against me-Ha!" "Don't use that language!" Moriq roared. "Tori did not want to 'chat' most likely because you killed her! You are the reason she is here!" Grainett gasped, and it seemed he had swallowed himself as he respired, a black mist forming in the air. It slowly compacted together, getting faster, until it held Jared's shape. He growled more harshly than Moriq. (Transform) "She will talk with me whether she likes it or not!" he barked, "You do want to see my friend, do you not?" Moriq glanced over at me. I knew what he was thinking. "No." I whispered. He smiled reassuringly. He tried. "Yes." he breathed. He turned to Jared. "You may speak to her quickly, if you take us to Xavier right away." Jared laughed. "Of course." He turned to me and smiled greater. "Come with me, Don't worry, we won't go very far. Just for a stroll over there." Stroll? Here? I was going to laugh, but it just turned into a sneer as I remebered what happened the last time I did that. I went along with him, and after a bit of walking, he flipped around and asked me, "Will you forgive me?" I just stared at him. "No." I thought for a bit. "Why would I?" Jared got closer to me, his breath trickling like blood down my neck. "Because I can help you get out of here. I love you, you know. I still do. I want you. I'm not using you, I already have your powers. It's a mystery how you can still remember who you were." Were. That word hit me like ice hitting the heated gravel at the market, sizzling, getting to the core. He did this to me. But I was with him, therefore, I would take advantage. "I'll come back to you if you answer me this-You have experience in this world, more than me. But you died after me. What do I not remember? How long was I.....how long was I in that darkness before this?" "You silly girl," laughed Jared, his icy eyes hard against mine, "You are still in darkness,"

I awoke and stood suddenly. I could not recognize the bright room I was in, the only thing casting a shadow was a desk, and a man behind the desk. He was pale and smooth, his skin shone. He was beautiful. I looked down and realized I was almost nude, scrathches all over my body, some seeping precious blood, some hardening into a sticky mess. Who had done this? The beautiful man spoke. "Tell me your secrets," he said, "I can help you." Then I saw his eyes. His evil, smiling eyes. I laughed, unafraid. "Grainett," I said, "I will not be tortured to innocence. I will not tell a demon the secrets that have kept me loved and alive. You may hate me, but your other side, Jared, he loves me.
