I'd recommend the Sandman comic book series by Neil Gaiman... it's very thought-provoking and quite well-written.

If comic books aren't your thing, you could also try "Canticle for Leibowitz," a fascinating sci-fi tale about the aftermath and recovery from a nuclear war. It starts out with the survivors in the dark age and takes several time jumps to finally show the world back in modern times, it's really cool.
