Does belief decide who goes to heaven?

So... I want to know, do you think an atheist could go to heaven if they lived a good life. What if a Christian lived a life more full of sin then an atheist? Would they both go to hell? Or just the atheist or Christian?

Quite simple.
In order to prevent offending anyone, this post is meant to state what I believe based on the bible. All right.

To get into heaven requires perfection, because heaven, is eternal life. Hell, is eternal death. And as we know, the wages of sin are death(Romans 6:23). So, if the wages of sin are death, that means that we deserve to die. So one sin, means death. So therefore, in order to get life, you have to be perfect.
Also, for good measure, I'll throw in, our righteousness is as filthy rags.(Isaiah 64:6) Also, fun fact. The word in Hebrew that means filthy rags, can also be used to describe used menstrual cloth. Fun ay?

This, is why I believe Jesus is the Truth, the way, and the life, no one comes to the father except through me. (John 14:6)

The way I read the Bible there are two ways to get to heaven:
1. Sell all your stuff and give to the poor
2. Go through Jesus

I can't say that I find any passage saying which one of these is the right one, but I guess it's one of them.

If you believe that good people go to heaven regardless of their faith, then you are a Buddhist.

Ah, but wait a moment.
You are talking of the story of the rich man, no? (Why did I feel like adding a cliche french phrase that I couldn't remember there? I don't know. Too many foreign movies.)
You forgot one part.
He said, sell all your possessions and you will have treasures in heaven, then come follow me.

For we are saved by grace, through faith, NOT BY WORKS, LEST ANY MAN BOAST.

This clearly states that the doctrine or belief of works cannot garner salvation. You cannot be a "good person", and enter the Kingdom of God. Period. Luemas said it beautifully about the penalty if sin and the quote of Isaiah 64:6, and those are critical, too, but I saw that no one quoted this above Scripture that answers this in one definitive way. John 14:6 is also another proponent for my argument. You cannot do anything other than repentance to find eternal salvation.
Yes, and atheist can gain entrance into heaven (C.S. Lewis, author of Chronicles of Narnia, Abolition of Man, etc...), but only through repentance of sin and having Christ as the Director and Master of their life.
Solamente mis dos centavos.

Also, hi all! Good to find a Christian board to post on. If you wish to contact me, feel free to do so.

Welcome!

I like you. You're a good n00b, in a good way, because you liked my post. If I could, I would increase your post count, or stuff, but because I'm just a mod, I'll just be nice to you.

Being a mod isn't a whole lot different from being a regular member...

But welcome anyways. And I agree with that verse as well, I just uh... didn't think of it.

welcome Ghost for Christ! And thanx for a great contribution to the discussion.

I would say that the quote you used goes against the notion of Atheists entering heaven, as it requires faith. But maybe it doesn't mean faith in God, but faith in something else, so I might be wrong.

It's not about being good, it's about being forgiven. We've all sinned, we've all fallen short of the glory of God and the purpose He had for us. We ALL deserve to go to hell, but because God loved us He was born into the world as Jesus Christ, took our punishment for us on the cross, and then rose again, proving that He was God. It was the cross that bridged the gap between man and God; we couldn't get to Him, so God came to us.

Many people think their good outweighs their bad and they don't need salvation.
Anyone who thinks themselves good will not repent. Heaven will be filled with the worst of sinners because they realise how wide the chasm is between God and themselves.

Just please, I want to see you in heaven. Jesus loves you no matter who you are or what you've done. Repent and look to Him, and you'll be good to go.

I still would feel more comforted if God cared whether or not people were good or bad.

He does care.

If he didn't, then he'd be an arbitrary God, and therefore inconsistent.

Unless you're referring to the idea that a murderer can't get to heaven, and that you should earn your way to heaven?

But...Isn't God only supposed to be perfect?

Would it be a sin to be perfect?

Sorry to question your beliefs...

An atheist who lives a good life and a Christian who lives a bad life are, according to the Bible, both going to Hell when they die. For it is only through Christ's perfect sacrifice that we are made righteous. Atheists do not believe in God, and therefore cannot believe that Jesus was God's Son sent to save humanity from our sins. Christians who live bad lives are not truly Christians, as "the workers are known by their fruits", and when a Christian reaps bad fruits, they confess that they do not follow Christ.

It's not a sin to be perfect, because Jesus was perfect, and without sin. If he being perfect, and was without sin, then you can safely assume that perfection isn't a sin. Otherwise, it wouldn't be perfection.
