I'm finally going to start up that roleplaying thing I've been talking about. For those of you unfamiliar with roleplaying games (RPGs), I'll explain what one is first. An RPG is a story told by the game master in which each of the players controls a character that acts on his own. It's like one of those Choose Your Own Adventure books only with much more freedom. Instead of being presented with one or two options you'll be able to react however you want. I'm going to start off with a simple story. It'll be set in the present. It'll be a zombie survival one. Here is a webcomic that illustrates kind of what it'll be like. I imagine it'll have less swearing and other objectionable content though. Because of the nature of the game, we won't have much in the way of mechanics. For those of you unfamiliar with RPGs, don't worry. For those of you who've played RPGs before, realize that you won't see anything like the following: "I'm going to attack the level 9 forest troll with my +11 axe of smiting. You'll need to roll 3d6 against his resilience. The air temperature is 3 degrees above normal today, with 27% humidity. That gives me a -2.711 advantage." We'll be relying more on common sense than math. It will be played on this forum and you'll do one thing per day. We won't have to be online at the same time, but it'll go fairly slowly. Any questions, comments, or suggestions? I'll be including more details as I go. |

I found my notes from when I had first conceived of this game. I was intending to reveal the plot points in them bit by bit but the game morphed and that didn’t happen. Anyway, here’s some information to help you know a bit about the world you’re in. Your characters will probably know almost nothing in here, but you can use this information to make your stories all fit in the same world. I went into some technical stuff that just stretches the limits of what I know. I’m not bothering to explain all the science very well so don’t feel like you have to get every detail. If you’re actually curious about of the fact behind the fiction, I might be able to explain some of the research. The story begins with a company. The name of the company is Rain Genetics and the event is the Regenesis program, plus the results of that program. The members of the Regenesis program were working with viruses, cancer, and genetic engineering. The idea was to take advantage of virus’ ability to resurrect dead cells as well as cancer’s tendency for continuous replication. The studies held the potential for humans to dramatically increase their healing abilities and never suffer from old age. Even resurrection from death seemed possible. There were over 200 scientists all working on their own versions of what would become the zombie virus. They were in various groups working on 37 distinct projects, some more successful than others, but all sharing breakthroughs with the common elements. The most studied type was the alpha variety, which affects both the living and the recently dead. The alpha virus reanimates any dead cells and mutates any living ones into infected cells. The basic instincts will remain, but the higher intelligence quickly fades over the course of even a day. They will not be able to communicate or think rationally, but they may be able to retain their ability to use simple tools for some time. The soul will have already gone on to the afterlife, meaning killing a zombie is at worst a crime of mutilating a dead body. Alpha zombies are incredibly difficult to kill, and are often able to take a shot to the lung, heart, or brain with little loss of function. Usually incapacitating them requires significant trauma to the brain, severing of the spinal column, or massive damage to what would on a normal person be considered vital organs. If infected blood enters a healthy person’s bloodstream, the healthy person will become a zombie. Since zombies have some blood in their mouths, biting is the normal means of transmission. These creatures can be incredibly aggressive. Furthermore, they have increased sensitivity in all of their senses. Their exceptional vision makes seeing in the darkness possible, yet makes it difficult for them to see in brighter light, such as daylight conditions. For this reason they prefer to remain indoors during the daytime. Their senses of smell and hearing are just as acute, comparable to a dog’s, and it is these they use in the daytime when they are essentially blind. They exude modified pheromones, allowing them to distinguish between infected and non-infected persons. They also use this as an alternate means of communication, giving them the appearance of hive-mindedness. Different chemicals can signal danger or the presence of food. The one sense that is not amplified is pain, which is decreased to the point that the undead feel only enough to avoid serious damage when they have no incentive to risk it. When there is such an incentive, such as when prey is available, pain is not a deterrent in the slightest. In addition to affecting humans, the alpha strain affects most mammals and some birds and reptiles. The Rain Genetics laboratory is located in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota). It is a huge complex with incredibly tight security; some of the guards have training and equipment on par with the US military. On researcher, Dr. Karnikov, accidentally released the alpha strain. The alarms went off and all non-security personnel were evacuated. The security systems put the facility in lockdown, but the chaos ensured that some zombies managed to break free. Now, the entire Twin Cities area is teeming with the undead. Currently it is under quarantine, with soldiers holding down the perimeter, but even the most conservative estimates say this blockade cannot last more than a month. The most liberal say that it has already been breached. |
