Rex Tanner Vs. Monica Patton [COMPLETE]

"Alright everybody! It's been a long day and many of our contestants have been blown away by their competition. However, it's now time for the best 16 of the Gunpla Battle Beginner's Tournament to strut their stuff~!" Announcer-san, mic in hand, stood on the stage overlooking the eight Gunpla Battlefields that had been setup within the grounds.

Each Battle Field consisted of seven fields set together, creating a moderately large battlefield for the contestants. With all eight setup within the community center's indoor field area, there was still plenty of room between the fields as well as a spectator and participant area.

GUNPLA BATTLE COMBAT MODE, STARTUP. MODEL DAMAGE LEVEL, SET TO B.

The systems began to hum to life as the Plavsky Particles started to build up, indicating it was time to begin.

PLEASE, SET YOUR GP BASE.

"Everyone is now setting their GP Base! The fields are generating now... looks like we have a nice variety of fields today for everyone to tear each other apart!"

BEGINNING PLAVSKY PARTICLE DISPERSAL... FIELD 1, SPACE. PLEASE SET YOUR GUNPLA.

"And with this, everyone has set their Gunpla... it's time to....!" with the audience cheering in the background, Announcer-san pointed her mic out towards the battle fields.

BATTLE START.

Top Sixteen was certainly nothing to sneeze at. Monica was certainly more than glad that she had Keo's Astray FENRIR; Had she been using her old GM, she might have gone out by now. Instead, she'd been able to tear through the competition without giving away any of the Gunpla's big secrets. She still had been finding herself thanking Keo between each match for building the Astray FENRIR for her... Though even then, she couldn't say that she had made it this far on the Astray FENRIR's performance alone. Even if Monica was a rookie Gunpla Battle fighter, she was certainly skilled enough to handle the early rounds.

But this, of course, was where the real fun began.

Monica set her GP base, followed by her Astray FENRIR. She wasn't exactly familiar with the Gunpla Battle community, so she didn't exactly know much about her opponent or if he was a big deal or not. Still, she hoped that this Rex Tanner was good; A fun, tough match was all Monica wanted. She'd rather lose against a good opponent than steamroll a lacking one. Of course, she'd most prefer beating a great opponent, but that wasn't something she would be expecting until at least the semi-finals. She hoped though that Mr. Tanner would surprise her- Hell, a guy with a name like a King should have the skills to back it up, right?

Rex was a bundle of nerves walking up to the battlefield. He'd done well so far, really well, but this is where things get dangerous! To be quite honest he was really happy to had come this far but if he kept going... oh man this was really exciting!! The dark-haired boy jumped up and down as he reached his area on the stage, positively giddy. He stared across the field and smiled at his opponent, a blonde that the screen identified as Monica Patton. "Let's have a good fight!" He grinned. The boy hadn't bothered looking much into his opponents or potential opponents beyond that. Anything he needed to know would reveal itself in the coming battle. If they survived long enough.

He followed the mechanized voice, directing him to set his GP Base although his hands seemed a little shaky as it took him an extra second or two to get the base to set in right. The Yajima logo appeared before loading his information. And then the stage before him lit up as the plavsky particles were dispersed creating the amazing mirage of a space battlefield. He swallowed lightly, so that's how it was going to be huh?

Rex set his Gouf Logi, adding the cattus rifle as well. He'd considered the other options he'd brought but... this was space. He pulled his hands back as that mechanized voice spoke and the controls appeared before him. Well, it was time to get serious then wasn't it? The field scanned his gunpla and the Gouf's head raised up, the unit's single eye lighting up bright green. The boy took in a deep breath and grinned as he took the controls. His hands were no longer shaking and he seemed the epitome of calm. The launch port materialized around his gunpla as the mechanical voice called out, "Battle Start"!

"Rex Tanner, Gouf Logi. Launching!" He spoke loud and clear as the Gouf Logi braced itself and launched, the port vanishing as he found himself in space.

Immediately the flight pack's wings spread open as he moved almost cautiously into the field. A single green eye scanning the area for the enemy's unit. At this moment he thought that, maybe from now on it might be more prudent to pay attention to the other battles. He could probably catch recordings later. But he needed to focus on the here and now. The gouf shouldered its cattus rifle, ready to fire the instant he caught sight of the enemy. Sure he was more-or-less out in the open, but... things were more interesting that way!

"Monica Patton, Astray Fenrir. Let's roll!"

The moment the catapult materialized around her Gunpla, Monica had the Astray FENRIR launch. Having a bit of a jump on getting onto the field was usually helpful, though in a ring this large, outside snipers, no one was getting hit right out of the launch port. Thank goodness her opponent wasn't using that type of Gunpla, or in a wide-open space like this, she'd be in far more trouble.

Actually, Monica wasn't quite happy with the arena as it was- By space, they really DID mean space, and lots of it. Of course there were colonies on the Field, but they were far enough away that they were pointless... Unless she could get the fight to move that way and force a Field Change. Aw, hell with it, might as well give it a shot. At the very least it's better than sitting around and waiting to get potshot while looking for the opponent. Wasting little time, the Astray FENRIR began pushing its way towards the colonies, Monica praying that Field Change wasn't disabled.

A flash of movement drew Rex's attention to his right screen. Slowly a wide grin spread on his face as the Gouf Logi took aim at the gunpla speeding across his screens. He fired off the cattus rifle, sending a rocket careening towards his opponent. "Running away so soon?" The boy chuckled, "I thought we were going to get to play for a while!" He shouted as he increased his speed sending his Gouf after the fleeing gunpla though he didn't seem to be gaining much ground. At this rate if she went too far she might fall out! But surely there was some reason to her actions but they were there to fight, and if he got close enough then they could really fight. If not well, that's what the gatling shield and Cattus here were for.

His hope was that shouting out to her would make her hesitate just enough for him to get on a hit but surely if she'd gotten this far she wasn't so easy to take down. He couldn't help but wonder what she'd do next... if he gave her the chance! With the short space of time he'd allowed her to keep running, he had shifted the angle at which he was aiming and fired off another rocket with the Cattus. His almost giggling laughter rang out through the speakers.

When Monica heard the shout from her opponent, she found herself twisting about in a sort of sloppy roll to see what the sound was about to find a rocket soar right past where the Astray FENRIR had been moments before, with another closing fast. "Oh, CRAP!" Monica squeaked, pulling out the FENRIR's beam rifle and squeezing off a shot. The beam struck the rocket dead center, causing it to blow quite a bit away from the Astray FENRIR to Monica's relief.

It didn't take her too long to spot where the rockets came from- Her opponent's Gunpla, a brick red Gouf with a weird shield and shoulder horns that were a bit different than what she remembered from the older series. Maybe one of those SEED "homage" suits she'd heard about? At any rate, those rockets were definitely not something she wanted to get hit by, and she doubted that was all the Gunpla was packing either.

Taking aim at her opponent's center mass, Monica squeezed off one more shot. With any luck, it might just hit her opponent dead on and end the match now, though she doubted it. Hopefully it would at least buy her some time to get to the Field Change point...

The enemy's control seemed off as she made a clumsy turn managing to avoid his first rocket before shooting down the second. That was pretty good though wasn't it? Rex grinned wider as that enemy gunpla turned its rifle towards him and fired. "Is that all miss pilot?" The boy laughed loudly, the thrusters on his Gouf's flight-pack sending him into an easy spin out of the beam's path as he took aim the the cattus again firing another rocket at this gunpla called Fenrir.

Fenrir... but in turn would he be acting as Odin or Vidarr? Rex chuckled at the thought. But honestly... "Do you even have a plan? No matter how big this stage is you will run out of playingfield eventually!" He called after her again. "Do you want to race or do you want to fight!?" Rex shouted, launching another rocket towards where he predicted the Fenrir to be by the time the rocket reached, and shooting another just behind so that she couldn't turn back and awkwardly dodge this time. Shortly after the third rocket left his rifle, Rex pressed forward once again chasing after this white wolf. If he was really lucky she'd get hit with all three but despite her lack of previous grace she could surely manage to get out of this one. The question is, would it buy him enough time?

With the speed of the incoming attacks, Monica felt like she was going to be overwhelmed. In the openness of space, there was nowhere the Astray FENRIR could take cover, and she knew she couldn't just keep dodging all day long. Sooner or later, one of these rockets were going to hit, especially with how close together they were being fired-

Wait a minute, rockets detonate when they connect with something, right? That would include the blasts from each other!

Monica cut her thrust and raised the beam rifle once more and took aim, firing at the frontmost missile. As the beam struck warhead, the rocket exploded, with the second rocket not far behind being caught in the blast. Then, a second blast from where the second rocket would have been, followed shortly by the third rocked getting caught in the second's blast and detonating as well. That could have been way worse, and Monica knew it- she should consider herself lucky the rockets were so close to one another like that.

Not one to waste an opportunity, Monica made use of the visual cover provided by the blasts and folded out the Astray FENRIR's railguns, taking aim at where her opponent fired from. Moments ago, she thought she heard him ask if that was all she had, and she figured she might as well respond now: As she fired at her opponent's last known location, she shouted out, "YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN' YET!" She had a plan too, but she didn't care to exactly tell her opponent that just yet; She'd rather he think this was all some sort of Indy Ploy... Which to a degree it was, but there was still a plan hatching in her mind, and it required getting to that Field Change point...

...But first, she might as well fire a follow-up shot with the second railgun, just in case.

Rex could only stare as his opponent managed to not only shoot their way through a second rocket, but with that one single shot somehow take down the entire volley, the explosions trailing back in some sort of domino effect. Damn, he definitely should have brought the Beam Bazooka instead... but then again he wouldn't have been able to see this display. It really was... "Awesome! That was a great shot!" The boy exclaimed, grinning widely again as he moved forward to close the space between them. Oh sure he had a lot of guns, but at heart Rex always favored close combat. And he was really looking forward to seeing his Tempest in action!

Though as he neared, danger warnings flashed across his screen as something pierced right through the barrel of his rifle! "Sh-" Rex twisted the gunpla throwing the rifle away from the suit, avoiding the explosion as well. But this was no time to relax! A voice rose over the clamor as the enemy pilot finally responded to his jeering questions. So, she was finally playing with him huh? Now things should start to get interesting!

Seeing as his Cattus was gone, Rex brought up his gatling shield and took aim. But before he could initiate the attack he saw the enemy's weapon, dual railguns attached over the shoulder. And from the looks of it he didn't have much time! As the enemy fired off another shot the Gouf Logi's thrusters kicked in hard allowing the suit to jump over the attack. "Close one!" The boy shouted as he flew over the attack but due to their field, he didn't fall back down. "But you'll have to do better than that!" Rex shifted the direction of the thrusters flying quickly above and towards his opponent. Taking careful aim at the Astray Fenrir, the Gouf Logi fired a volley of about 12 shots with the Draupnir gun attached to its now empty right hand.

"Oh, F-!"

Monica didn't have time to do much, and if she had, she didn't have the means to block the incoming volley- a line of rounds struck the Astray Fenrir in the shoulder, chewing up the shoulder armor and doing some serious damage to the right railgun. The shoulder armor did its job and protected the actual shoulder joint, but cracked off as a result, floating away in the field's simulated zero-G environment. The railgun wasn't exactly destroyed, but the console readings combined with the visible chipping made Monica pretty damn weary of firing it again. She still had the left Railgun intact, so she just had the right one fold up as much as she could still get it to for now.

Still, at this rate, it seemed that she wouldn't be able to trigger the Field Change at this point... But that actually might work to her advantage at this point. Her opponent wasn't that far away from her now, and given a few more shots, they'd likely be in punching distance of one another. Which meant it would be harder for either of them to evade now. There was no point in running- Monica might as well just cut loose here and now.

And boy howdy, did she.

Taking aim with the remaining Railgun and the Beam Rifle, Monica shouted back, "How's this for better!?" She opened fire, first with the beam rifle, then the railgun, then the beam rifle again, and finally a second railgun shot. At this range, and with how fast her opponent was coming in, Monica had a feeling she'd be doing some nice damage before her opponent got into melee range.

Rex beamed as he watched the enemy suit's shoulder armor chipped away and he damaged the Railgun enough for her to pull it back. But as he somewhat recklessly closed in that gave her the opportunity to return fire. The boy laughed loudly as he tried to shift his direction but with nothing to slow him down but his own thrusters the railgun fire slammed through the Gouf Logi's left shin sending him into a tilt. Despite the slight spin he managed to bring up the shield to block the beam rifle shot. Or rather he was lucky enough that the tilt sent him to where the second shot would hit his shield.

Oh man he wasn't taking this seriously enough was he? Although it seemed that his enemy finally was as she was firing at him again. He chuckled as he dashed to the side out of the way of those two shots. He could feel that his connection to the left leg's thrusters were damaged, but that's what the flight pack was for! The Gouf Logi raised its gatling shield, firing off a dozen rounds it resumed the slower pace to close the distance. Just a little more...

Rex's laughter came on over the speakers as he responded to her shout back to him "Much better! But... I'm still going to kill you!" He swung back his right hand as though he were going to punch although the distance was still too far for that, however when the Gouf's arm slammed forward, his heat-wire shot out towards the Astray FENRIR. A thick wire with a clawed hook at the end stretched out, reaching for the enemy. If he managed to grab anything an instant electric shock would be delivered, if not well... the whip was deployed now!

Monica held the beam rifle up when she saw the Gatling come up again, laughing as she heard her opponent's response. "Kill me? That's a bit much for Gunpla Battle, don't you think!?" It didn't take her more than a glance to tell that the beam rifle was pretty messed up now- Sparking heavily, badly chipped, chances were it would blow if she tried to fire with it. Well, might as well use it to cover herself one last time.

Monica released the beam rifle right in front of her, spinning it so it would act as a sort of decoy as she dropped low and closed the distance- a good move since the rifle took the hit for her from the heat wire, exploding within a second after being hit. Drawing her beam saber from the Astray FENRIR's back, Monica took a pot shot with the Railgun before darting in, igniting the beam saber and thrusting out in an attempt to skewer her opponent's Gouf.

"Is it?" Rex snickered, "You're just not serious enough!" Jeez this opponent of his really didn't know how to have fun did she? Well that was neither here nor there it wouldn't change how things were going. She'd managed to block his attacks by sacrificing her already damaged rifle. Danger flashed across his screen when she fired the railgun again, he pulled back the wire as he brought up his shield to block the attack, the top spike snapping off of his shield at the impact.

But when he glanced up the Astray Fenrir was already blasting towards him with its beam saber pointed right at him. Finally the close combat he'd been looking forward too! The Gouf Logi's thrusters blasted into action, the suit sliding to the side away from the thrust. Rex grinned as the heat wire snapped back into the Gouf's forearm before he reached to the back of the shield. The Gouf Logi moved the shield away from its blocking position but in its opposite hand it held the tempest blade. Rex swung the blade out, extending it to the full length and activated the beams on each edge before swinging back towards the astray Fenrir. A sudden idea struck him and Rex laughed louder with a hint of malice in his voice as he ejected the gatling apparatus from his shield, tossing it out of his way. The Gouf Logi brought up the shielded hand and fired off a burst of about 12 shots from the left-arm's Draupnir gun.

"Just the opposite," Monica shouted back, half-cackling herself as the two Gunpla clashed. "I'm having a field day!" As the Tempest blade swung towards the Astray FENRIR, Monica swatted it upwards with her own beam saber, parrying the blade away while pushing herself out of the way of the follow-up volley from the Gouf. That could have been nasty if it landed... Though it did give Monica an idea of her own.

Rolling the Astray FENRIR's wrist some, Monica made use of the parry to transition right into a slash, aiming to cut the Gouf from right shoulder to left hip, before tapping the verniers to back off a bit- She didn't need much room, just enough to fire off a railgun round outside of her opponent's melee range. As soon as the shell left the railgun's barrel, Monica tapped the verniers again in a short circle-strafe in an attempt to stab down into the Gouf's head with her beam saber, like a spear fisherman after a grouper.

"C'mon, c'mon! Show me what you can really do!"

Rex laughed louder as his opponent was able to parry away his blade moving into an attack. He started his thrusters to avoid the slash but his left side lagged just enough for her slash to cut through the plating on his left hip which casually floated away despite the high speed action occuring right next to it. Before he could move forward to attack again she blasted out of range. Well, that was an obvious move! Even before her railgun charged up he was moving his shield to catch the blow. The shield worked magnificently but the rest of the spike decoration snapped off and damage on the shield was obvious as it was starting to crack. It would probably barely last another attack yet here another one was coming.

As she was shouting and dashing in Rex took careful aim and ejected the shield at her, intercepting the blow. Rex smiled, "Lets see you take this!" he shouted, swinging that arm out sending his heat rod whip out to capture the encroaching enemy as her sword met the shield.

If he was lucky the whip would grab around the astray Fenrir's middle. If it did he would pull the Astray Fenrir in towards the left as the Gouf Logi made a mighty horizontal swing with the other arm sweeping left to right in order to pull and slice the enemy gunpla squarely in two before the heat rod even had a chance to heat up.

Well. If he was lucky anyways. If not he would make the slash regardless and do his best to entrap the enemy gunpla. If that first horizontal slash didn't finish her off, he would bring the blade back across angling it slightly upwards to diagonally slash across the Astray Fenrir's torso.

With the shield gone, Monica knew her opponent wouldn't be able to tank her attacks much longer. There was only so much one could avoid in a match like this, and with the Gouf's primary means of defense gone, there wasn't much left they could block. In a way, Monica kind of hoped the man had something to offer to at least try to turn the tide, some kind of trump card in case things went south. She hadn't seen any sign of one yet, though, but that didn't mean it didn't exist.

What Monica did see, however, was the incoming heat rod. Instinctively, Monica had the Astray FENRIR get low and hold its free arm out to block the incoming heat whip, which proceeded to wrap around the forearm- thankfully, due to her changed positioning, the arm was all it grabbed, but that didn't stop the Astray FENRIR from being pulled in towards the enemy Gunpla. Rather than fight it, Monica waited until the last second before yanking on the heat rod to pull herself over the Gouf. The motion might have prevented her from getting the Astray FENRIR split in half, but it also led to her losing the arm, cut off at the elbow. Thanks to the changed trajectory and no longer being held by the heat rod, the follow-up slash from the Gouf wound up just lobbing the remains of the damaged arm in half vertically. Monica made use of her position above the Gouf to thrust at it from above in a sorry attempt at a counter of the second Tempest slash, a bit too late to prevent damage to the Astray FENRIR.

"I took it, all right!" Monica shouted out with a cackle, glancing at the damage done to the Astray's arm. It was pretty messed up; She'd have to apologize to Keo later for doing such a number on her Gunpla, but she couldn't be afraid to get hit if it meant she could win. "Here, have some back!" Thanks to the momentum of the pull, it only took a small burst from the verniers to let Monica circle-strafe around a bit to the right of the Gouf before once again taking a pot shot at the Gouf Logi before hitting the thrusters to move back in again, except instead of trying to run the Gouf Logi through, Monica was trying for a flyby, aiming to cleave the Gouf Logi in half at the waist.

So Rex had managed to grab her arm and destroy it, progress! But he also knew she wasn't down yet! He followed her trajectory and slashed upwards as she slashed down the beam blade of his Tempest knocking the point of her sword behind his head. Though she was certainly into it now, Rex couldn't help but chuckle as she shouted back and took another shot at him. It wasn't such a surprise, he'd caught on to her tactics so far and he was easily able to make a quick shift to accept the railgun shot with his right shoulder armor. Too bad he hadn't been able to take out that first this would be a lot easier! Then again he wouldn't have been participating if he thought it would be easy,

It pierced through and knocked the shoulder armor into pieces, but it didn't manage to destroy the joint just yet. He laughed loudly over the speakers as she turned to come in for another strike. The Gouf Logi held the Tempest strong in its right hand to deflect the blow, and Rex allowed the gunpla to spin with the momentum of the blow, stopping as it faced the Astray Fenrir again. Within moments Rex threw the gunpla's left arm out with the heat rod again swinging towards his enemy. At the same time the Gouf Logi raised its right arm and aimed carefully before firing off another 12 shots with the Draupnir. "What's the matter can't you do better than this?!" He laughed, he was having a lot of fun but if she wanted to beat him, let alone the other competitors she'd have to do even better than this. Although to be fair the same could be said of him.

Ideally the heat rod would have immobilized or began to burn through the enemy gunpla while the volley of shots from the draupnir could tear through the machine until that heat rod was hot enough to tear through it.

It seemed that Monica's opponent had started to get a handle on her pattern- Enough to at least be more selective on what to block at any rate. She still had the man on the ropes, but she didn't exactly expect him to use the Gouf's heavy shoulder armor to tank the railgun shot. A moment ago, Monica was hoping to see what kind of trump cards her opponent had up their sleeves, but now she was wondering whether she should use her own? ...No, not yet. She still had plenty to work with still- there wasn't a good enough reason to use 'that' yet.

"Ha! That's my line," Monica cracked off, watching the Gouf's arm movements. Monica had caught up with her opponent's own pattern with the weapon, so when the arm with the heat rod came again, she ducked away and under the heat rod, converting the motion into a full cartwheel when the Draupnir came up, effectively sidestepping the volley.

As soon as she re-oriented herself, Monica made another thrust at the Gouf- This time not aiming at center mass, but rather to skewer the arm carrying the heat rod. The weapon had proven to be enough of a pain that Monica wanted to remove it from the equation. A quick tap of the verniers later, and Monica was able to put just enough room between her and her opponent to fire off another shot from the railgun, aiming for center mass once again. Just after firing, Monica used the thrusters to arc in towards the Gouf Logi from the right, going in for a spinning horizontal slash... Only to throw a low sweeping roundhouse instead, trying to throw her opponent off-balance and possibly do some damage to their thrusters while she's at it. Sure, her opponent might have caught on to her attack pattern, but that didn't necessarily mean they knew exactly where she'd aim her strikes. Besides, keeping the pressure like this meant Monica could limit what her opponent could throw back at her.

Rex chuckled when the enemy pilot countered his jeer. Too bad he didn't have any extra big guns at this point. Well he ad a few more ideas he could try but maybe he'd manage to put this wolf down before that point. Although if she had something else to show off he might really get in trouble. Well either way at least it wasn't boring!

Well either way that's not something to be thinking about when you're being attacked! he managed to pull the heat rod in enough to coil up a loop in his hand to block and knock away the beam saber thrust. Once again she jumped back to fire that railgun but whenever she moved back he'd caught on to move. Using his flight pack thrusters on the undamaged leg, the Gouf Logi flew out of the shot's path. Just as he stopped she was zooming in again to go after him with a slash to cut through him. Rex raised his coiled heat rod to block the beam again when she suddenly dropped!! Normally he would have jumped back out of the way but in a moment of panic instead the young pilot swung forward the Tempest blade. It's a good thing they were in space because otherwise he woudl have just dragged his sword into the ground as he swept the beam sword low next to him into an upward slash at the leg. Ideally this would cut it off at the impact point but he'd learned so far in this battle not to hold his breath for such lucky strikes.

As soon as his slash completed its arc, whether he managed to cut off the Astray Fenrir's leg or not, he would dash to the other side trying to move to flank the enemy and aim another slash at the enemy gunpla in a diagonal slash this time aiming specifically to rid her of that pesky railgun. After a second to calm down from the fake Rex could only laugh again even louder. This was really really fun!

Most would probably expect someone who just had their Gunpla's leg lobbed off at the shin to be worried or afraid. As the Tempest cleaved through the Astray FENRIR's shin though, Monica could only laugh in giddy at the counter; She hadn't expected a counter like that, and the fact that her opponent was good enough to see that sweep coming made the young woman especially happy. She was really getting a challenge! This, right now, was what Monica loved about Gunpla Battle!

When the Gouf Logi finished its slash and stepped in for the follow-up, Monica brought the Astray FENRIR's beam saber up and brought it to guard her railgun, the Tempest blade skipping off the beam saber at the point of impact thanks to her angling. Using the coiled position of the guard, Monica flicked the beam saber around and down, aiming to split the Gouf Logi vertically. The moment the slash completed its arc, Monica used the momentum of the slash to switch to a reverse grip as the Astray FENRIR dropped low, aiming to get underneath the Gouf Logi. Monica brought the beam saber up one more time, still in the reverse grip, and threw it like a dart at the Gouf Logi's underside, aiming to hit just about anything.

Monica pulled the Astray FENRIR's other beam saber with the returning motion from throwing the first, as the hit the thrust, trying to slip behind the Gouf Logi. As soon as she was within range, Monica slashed at the Gouf Logi's backside, wondering what kind of reaction she'd be getting this time?
