"GUNPLA BATTLE COMBAT MODE, STARTUP. MODEL DAMAGE LEVEL, SET TO C."
Hadrian Kurtz looked down uncertainly at his own Gunpla. The Sturmpanzer Dom, he had called it. Not that he had ever used it in battle. How would they perform together?

"PLEASE, SET YOUR GP BASE."
Kurtz placed the GP base onto its panel.

BEGINNING PLAVSKY PARTICLE DISPERSAL! FIELD TWO: DESERT! PLEASE SET YOUR GUNPLA!"
Kurtz felt slight elation. Desert. A field suited to the Dom Tropen. He punched his fists together in anticipation.

For the Sturmpanzer Dom's inaugural battle, Kurtz was taking the 880mm Raketen, the Heat Saber, two Sturm Fausts and the 90mm MG, mounted on the rear clip. He was hunting armor, a role immensely suited to a Panzergrenadier. So Kurtz chose to equip more explosive weaponry in place of the hand grenades.

The Sturmpanzer Dom was ready. Kurtz was ready. It was time.

"BATTLE START!"

"Hadrian Kurtz, Sturmpanzer Dom. Angriff!"

The Dom launched, clutching the 880mm bazooka and its knuckle shield in each arm.

Alex set his GP base, as the battle system sounded off. He would look over his Gm Quel, it's left arm mounted a shield and right hand carrying it's GM Rifle. He set the Gunpla down with a careful touch. The holographic controls appeared, his hands moved to grip each one as he readied himself. The launch catapult appeared, the GM Quel crouched down and visor lit up.

"Alex Knight, GM Quel. Let's do it!" he said as the system launched his GM Quel into the vast desert. He began scanning around as he took note of the area, carefully advancing into the desert. "Now where are you going to come at me at?" he asked himself, checking his sensors as he waited.

The Dom landed with a crunch, sinking slightly into the soft golden sand. Nothing was around. Kurtz checked his map and saw that he was at the bottom left of the field. That meant his opponent would come from the top right.

He activated the Dom's hover mode and advanced straight, gliding over the sand towards the rock outcroppings. The Dom Tropen's filters would be hardly troubled by the sand being kicked up and if his opponent saw the dust cloud, even better. Let him think he knew where Kurtz was coming from.

Kurtz's Dom sped forward towards a small rock and as he got closer, Kurtz saw the faint outline of his opponent's unit. Five rockets against a GM Quel. It had thrusters so it had the maneuverability to dodge but wasn't going to be entirely as maneuverable as the Dom. Time to test the fellow out. Kurtz lined up a shot slightly to the GM's left and fired his first rocket. It was not dead center but if the GM moved, the rocket would miss. They were at long range, allowing his opponent plenty of time to dodge. The chances of a direct hit were minimal. Best to inconvenience him and, perhaps, lay a false impression of poor aim. The rocket would most likely strike the rock outcropping rather than the GM.

Immediately after this, Kurtz moved to his left to hide behind another rock outcropping. As he moved, Kurtz fired again, this time to the GM's right. If the GM dodged away from the rocket to his left, the obvious choice would be to move to his right. There was a chance that this shot might strike. If not, at least the GM's pilot would be worried. Kurtz's hover mode was kicking up a sand cloud to cover up his movements. Two rockets gone when Kurtz stopped behind the rock. The pause allowed him to check his map again and plan the next move. Yes, he would need to maneuver to make use of his long range at the start and begin to close with the enemy GM. So far, he had just welcomed his opponent, since the rock detonation probably was not going to damage the GM terribly much and he doubted that the second rocket launched would hit either. Nonetheless, he had gotten the first shot and that always made things easier.

Alex moved the controls, the GM Quel walking through the desert slowly. The head scanned left to right, camera taking note of the surroundings. With a smoke trail caught Alex's eye as a bazooka rocket exploded to the left of his Gunpla. Alex pulled back on the controls, to launch the GM Quel backwards from the explosion. "That was too close!" he said, eyes fixed on the location the round came from.

Alex's fingers manipulated the golden orbs, selecting the "Special" option. The left arm of the Gunpla aimed below where the GM Quel had been, it launched a self inflating balloon the took on the form of the GM Quel. The balloon though did not last long, as a second rocket flew inbound from the balloon's right. The explosion nearby popped the balloon with an audioable sound.

The GM Quel landed, it ran quickly to a rock for nearby cover. He pressed the GM Quel's back against the rock for shielding. Alex huffed and checked his scanner for the sensor the contact that just moved around him. He was alerted and on the guard now, those bazooka shots were no jokes.

Kurtz sidestepped left, blowing up sand in that direction, and then circled across the sand cloud so that his movement was somewhat hidden. Three rockets left. Kurtz drove his Dom around the rock outcroppings to his right, hoping that his opponent was not entirely sure what was going on due to all the sand being kicked up. He planned to head for the smaller rocks while using the large one to screen his forward movement.

As Kurtz rounded the corner, his screen flashed as the Dom detected the GM again on optical. Part of it was behind the rock formation which he had seen earlier. Kurtz fired on the move, continuing between the two rocks, which had been his original destination. The roar of the 880mm rocket firing and its backblast hardly troubled the sturdy Dom. He had aimed, this time, at his opponent's right side. This was its forte! Kurtz moved behind the large jutting rock formation, using it to partially shield him. His Dom still had a good angle on the GM so he fired the 880mm again and felt the thrill of the launcher's roar. This time, he chose to fire at his opponent's center mass.

Each firing had reminded Kurtz of the Leopard 2's main gun or the PzH 2000's 155mm gun. Loud, deafening, and destructive. He had seen both being used in training and in operations overseas. Of course, the 880mm was probably a nod to the 88mm guns from World War 2. Good old German engineering, he grinned.

One rocket left. There was no reload for the 880mm and he had managed to close the distance.

Kurtz flipped up his knuckle shield and drew one of the Sturm Fausts. If the GM charged him, then he'd meet yet another pair of rockets and some 110mm rounds. Otherwise, Kurtz fully intended to take the fight to the GM.

The sensor ping grew louder as Alex waited for his opponent to come around into the open. A ping caught to his right, out in the open where some sand had blown up. Alex swiftly reacted, turning the GM Quel to face the target, the bazooka rocket crashing into the rock he used for a shield. The explosion was close, too close for Alex's comfort. He thought this as the GM Quel crashed backpack first into the sand with a small skid. "Damn, could he possible shoot ANY closer?!" he said, pulling the GM Quel up onto it's feet.

No sooner had the words left his mouth, did the second bazooka round soar right past him. If the first round had not thrown him off target, that could have been really bad. He looked toward the Dom with a grin, hands gripped the controls tightly as he spoke. "My turn!"

The GM Quel took a crouched stand, it's verniers glowing a faint blue. "Let's do it!" Alex shouted, the powered jump launched the GM Quel high into the air at a angle. Allowing it to cover a great distance toward the Dom. Left arm braced the shield over the torso of the GM Quel. The right arm took aim with the GM Rifle. A lock on sounded from Alex's controls, he let loose with the GM Rifle. The fifteen rounds fired from the barrel of the GM Rifle, soaring toward the Dom below.

The jutting rocks took a couple hits for Kurtz but most of the rounds struck the Dom head on. It's armored hull, however, shrugged off most of the hits. Repeated 90mm attacks would have been a concern for his armor but a single burst wasn't going to upset his Dom. Except for a single round that had penetrated his left arm above the elbow. The arm was still operative but not as responsive.

But now the fellow was in the air. Time to stand firm and let him have it. He triggered the Beam Scattering Gun and fired it. The weapon's sole purpose was to blind his opponent at close range. This definitely counted as close range. With its maneuverability in the air, the sturm faust's slower rocket-propelled contact warhead was useless against the GM. The last 880mm rocket, with its higher velocity, had to strike true if Kurtz was going to get a mid-air kill. The Dom pressed the trigger and the loud whump sounded again as the final rocket fired and launched itself on its terminal flight. It soared straight towards the GM's chest, rotating in the air to maintain a stable trajectory.

With the last rocket expended, Kurtz backed up to draw his opponent closer as the Dom dropped the bazooka. In the same movement, it reached behind and pulled the second sturm faust and readied it. To keep things interesting, he fired a 10 round burst at the GM's right side, in the event that he dodged that way. However, there was a slight pause before the arm cannon bucked from its firing. That damaged arm was going to be a minor irritation if it always had a delayed response.

Kurtz kept backing up for 50 meters until he was in the open sand basin and waited for his opponent to advance into the open terrain.

Managing to keep the unit upright, he would move it toward the Dom with it's weapon ready. Following after it as he checked over the damage caused by the machine gun to his unit. Finally reaching visual sight of the target, Alex would lock on with the GM Rifle. Having to use both arms now to support the weapon and firing off the last 15 rounds in the clip.

The GM Quel and the ground were quickly growing close to each other. Alex's hand pulled on the controls again, thrusters firing to close the Gunpla as it was about to touch down. A solid lock tone on his unit all but changed this landing for the worse. Alex looked at the Dom expecting another bazooka round, but was greeted by it's Beam Scattering Gun. "Dammit!" he shouted as he couldn't see because of the blinding effect.

The solid impact from the last bazooka round made the soft landing impossible. Shield shattering from the close range bazooka hit and left forearm looking no worse for wear. The GM Quel plummeted to the ground in a chest first skid. Alex managed to pull the GM Quel up, only to see the machine gun armed Dom point at him. He selected the "Special" tab on the controls again. The GM Quel's left hand slowly raised, deploying another look alike dummy balloon between himself and the Dom.

Alex then tried to move the GM Quel out from behind the dummy. Hoping the lock on tranfered to the dummy balloon instead. The machine gun rounds tore through the balloon, catching the left side of the real GM Quel as Alex had moved away from it. Bullet holes filling the left arm and shoulder, the dummy balloon failing Alex.

Alex turned the GM Quel toward the Dom as it retreated. Thrusters propelling the Gunpla forward to keep it. He took aim with the GM Rifle again, locking on as he fired off the last fifteen rounds in the weapon. A satisfying and worrying click heard once the weapon was empty.

The moment the GM appeared, Kurtz pushed the Dom forwards on full power, charging towards the Dom. He noted that its shield was missing. Obviously the last rocket had finally scored where its brothers had not. More 90mm rounds struck into the Dom, some penetrating and rending his armor plates, blowing off great chunks of them. But that was fine. He could take the hits. If he fired again, the Kurtz would be in trouble. The only thing of note was that the 110mm cannon had been damaged, leaving it inoperable. And a sand filter had been blown off. Oh well.

He triggered the left sturm faust. A heart beat of nothing and then the rocket launched. It was aimed at the GM's right. All it needed to do was pin the GM where it was. Immediately, Kurtz threw away the empty barrel and slid the knuckle shield back into place. He could protect himself again. He side stepped to his right, continuing the approach to the GM in a lateral movement now. Kurtz triggered the beam scattering gun again to blind the GM. Once it had fired, Kurtz redlined the Dom's thrusters so that he closed the distance rapidly.

At point blank range, he fired the second and last sturm faust straight down at the GM Quel's chest. With the last of his speed, Kurtz veered away to the right, kicking sand towards the GM. Away from the explosion sure to follow.

The ammo count rung "Zero" as Alex looked at the GM Rifle. With a quick manipulation of the controls, the GM Quel had thrown down the weapon. The Gunpla's head tracked the Dom as it moved away. The launched Strum Faust catching his eye and he locked onto it. The pair of vulcans in the GM Quel's head fired off a collection of rounds to strike the rocket propelled grenade. It wasn't hard to catch missiles with vulcans, the Strum Faust exploded midway between the Dom and GM Quel.

With a standing at the ready and alert stance, the GM Quel followed the Dom. Head turning to face the unit, and as it got closer Alex fired the vulcans again. He watched the rounds fly toward the Dom, until he remembered the Beam Scattering Gun. He tagged the "Special" option a third time, to deploy another look alike balloon infront of him to try and shield his eyes. It seemed to work that way, however the Sturm Faust behind the Beam Scattering Gun attack could not be blocked.

The explosion was much to close for any sort of dodging to save the GM Quel from damage. The dummy balloon couldn't support any of the explosion and it was evident by the damage left behind on the GM Quel. The already damaged left side was now scarred with black. The left hand up to the shoulder and part of the shoulder missing after the explosion. The now crouched GM Quel slowly stood up as the Dom skirted by, sand being spilled on the other Gunpla.

The strain of Kurtz's move had its own effect on the Dom. Though sand couldn't get into the armor, a broken sand filter meant that sand was able to get into his jets. A warning sign flashed, highlighting the left leg's jets which were rapidly losing power now. Kurtz shut down the hover mode immediately. If he kept taking in sand while hovering, the Dom risked losing its entire leg. Just then, 60mm rounds struck his back, throwing the Dom forwards. His backpack had been damaged by the rounds. Kurtz was grounded now. No jets now. That was fine. Kurtz was an infantryman, after all.

He discarded the second empty sturm faust tube and snatched the MMP 80 from its holder in the back. The gun's magazine held 32 armor piercing anti-mobile rounds. Kurtz walked the Dom towards the GM, gun pointed at the GM, finger on the trigger and ready to fire.

"Unless you vish a fight to de death, it has been a good fight. Will you surrender or call it a draw? We are two wounded warriors. Surely it is time to lay down our arms and share a beer?"

In Kurtz's experience, battles rarely ended in total annihilation. Once overpowered, a side would attempt to withdraw or, in unable, to surrender. A fight between equal foes bludgeoning each other to death through attrition was archaic. It belonged in the annals of history books when countries had mobilized millions. A one to one fight between toys was hardly justifiable under the rules of total war. In a tournament, perhaps. But a simple challenge match shouldn't require any desperate struggles.

Alex's GM Quel finally stood up, the right hand resting on the beam saber still slotted in the backpack. He looked across at the Dom that was staring him down with a weapon ready. He grinned and looked around his holographic controls as the screens flared red. Warnings ans sirens going off as it indicated the critical amounts of damage to his Gunpla. Alex took a minute to think about the situation, he could charge the Dom. If he is lucky the machine gun rounds wouldn't cause more damage. Honestly though he sees it as a double suicide no matter what though.

The GM Quel slowly lowered it's hand down to a relaxed stance, Alex giving out a sigh. "Man, that was great really." he chuckled as he said. He looked over the Dom with a curious eye. "I agree to a draw, this has been a pretty good battle." he smiled and waited, hands on the controls to see if his opponent would agree. "A drink eh? I suppose that isn't a bad idea. I had some questions about your Gunpla." He smiled at his opponent. "Rather, need some advice from you." he restated his comment.

"Battle ended!"

The holographic screens shut down and Kurtz smiled.

"I admit that I do not know what to make of the fight. It is both like and unlike real warfare!"

He had enjoyed the game but Kurtz still didn't see it as more than a highly competitive, well funded children's game. The trick, however, was that it could be leveled up. Beginners and veterans alike could participate and learn from each other. One on one was interesting but not Kurtz's cup of tea. He wanted to try larger team battles where strategy and tactics made as much difference as individual skill.

"If you know somewhere good, we can get a drink and talk!"
