Kyle would get down from the Zanny and walk back to the study room. He was happy with his amount of notes for now, and felt he understood the theory well enough. When he got to the room, he spread out his notes about the cockpit. Diving into the control section of the manual as he began reviewing it, taking his time to read the details. "I'll say whoever wrote this did a good job." he commented as he wrote down new notes about the controls. "I just hope I can handle it, this sounds very complicated." he said with a grin. Aside from his long nights of studying, Kyle would spend time in the G tolerance trainer. This would usually leave him worse for wear as the days went by, it was rough. Every time he felt like he was getting use to it, the trainer would just increase the level. Aside from the aching body, it did leave him with the impression that these machines could kill the pilot with enough force. The days past, and Kyle got better slowly but surely as the live testing date came closer. Kyle noted a lack of his commanding officer around, not that it bothered him. He was sure she was busy handling so many things, best not bug her. |

Today was the day everyone was waiting for: The first operational test of the Zanny refurbished mobile suit system operated by Kyle Driscoll who had been just promoted to the rank of ensign after passing the aptitude and theoretical tests. He also survived G forces training becoming full fledged pilot. Previous to the beginning of the test Lt. commander Von Witzland clad in her usual black uniform approached the young man, handing him the winged badge he was now to wear at all times which symbolized his status as a pilot. " From now on you'll be assigned to the 404th independent mobile suit corps, Ensign Driscoll. This is only the beginning so look alive." She personally escorted him to the vechicle they would take arriving at one of Jaburo's underground training facilities. It was a large cave complex fully conditioned and with plenty of illumination. On top of a massive Flatbed truck laid the Zanny he would be piloting painted white, red and blue. " jeez what the fuck is up with that color scheme? I hope this doesn't become a trend" Marina wondered if this was some sort of sick joke, regardless that was the paint job the admiralty picked for the first Zanny and she wasn't gong to oppose orders from their superiors. Several long and thick wires where outfitted to the Zanny backpacks providing the necessary energy to kick start the dormant reactor. Soon the engineers where done stabilizing it and gave the pilot the green light to come aboard as they removed the auxiliary cables leaving only the additional hardware on the cockpit that would record all possible information. The first step was relatively simple consisting of a mere motion tests where Kyle would make the Zanny perform a wide variety of motions putting the power plant trough its paces. In the meantime Marina was with the technicians overseeing the data that was being analyzed in real time. The next test was a simple firing range exercise where he would fire a 120mm Zaku machinegun, Bazooka and a experimental high caliber cannon of Earth Federation manufacture employing live ammunition. " Ensign Driscoll you're good to go." Hopefully he wouldnt embarrass them all. This was a secret test so Marina was the only high ranking officer overseeing this entire operation. |

On that very faithful day, in which Kyle was promoted and the Zanny was before him. He couldn't have looked any happier, so much the moment he got permission he was in the cockpit of the Zanny. Which the generator turned on, it didn't take long for Kyle activate the systems in the cockpit. He had been practicing the start up sequence quite a bit, and once he got all greens he took the controls. The fact is, the Zanny handles like a piece of crap that couldn't move. He managed to get the Zanny to situp, followed by a slow stand. That part looked smooth at least, but man was Kyle sweating in the cockpit. "Why was there nothing in here about how clunky this thing is." he was talking under his breath. The first few steps were wobbly, and the Zanny buckled down to one knee for a minute. Calling out over the communications, "Its alright, I wanted to test the impact bracers!" he told those watching. This was a lie as really he just couldn't get it to move like he wanted. This tactic of calling out him testing the mobile suit's impact bracers was common. When the Zanny was in full sprint and ended up falling back on it's knee while it stopped. Kyle was repeating the same words, all the while moving around the cockpit's control quickly. Then the time to test the verniers appeared, with a slight bend of the knees. The Zanny launched itself over a couple of hangers into a safe landing zone. The verniers assisting the take off and landing, Kyle actually managed to land it carefully this time. With a brisk walk back to the firing range, Kyle had his flight suit half way undone and sleeves off. "Okay, no more movement please, can I just shoot things?" he was asking, and he received the all clear from his commander. "I'll start with the Zaku 120mm machine gun." he said, it took him a minute to grab the rifle. The controls really were a pain, but he was slowly learning some of them. The assortment of targets laid before him, some moving and some still to choose from. Kyle took aim at one of the still targets, and let loose with a burst of rounds. While one struck home the others landed in the ground nearby, with Kyle growing. "Come on partner, don't do this to me." he adjusted the sighting by a couple degrees. This time the rifle struck on target, a trio of rounds hitting a moving target without issue. Kyle let off a sigh of relief, having hit with the machine gun after a few minor adjustments. Next his Zanny picked up the bazooka, Kyle decide to break into a brisk run. Firing off a pair of rockets at a target. Watching them impact and tear them to shreds, Kyle had to struggle just a little to rebalance the mobile suit from the recoil. "Hey Chief! This thing doesn't like to stay put when I fire the bazooka!" he called over the communications to the head mechanic watching him. Setting the weapon down, next was the odd looking cannon which he picked up and braced. Tucked under the arm and left arm holding onto the front guard. Kyle took sight of a target a bit farther out, the Zanny crouched and the cannon fired. Kyle smirked, the cannon didn't miss like the other weapons because of his stance and targeting. He repeated this a couple of times. Kyle finished off the test targets with the spraying of the vulcans. This rounded out his weapons testing, walking the Zanny back over to the audience. He opened up the hatch and stood on it, waving to the people. "Hey! I did it Lt. Command Von Witzland!" he was calling out to his commander. I'm sure it might seem okay to him, but it might look silly to others. |

No matter what sort of excuse would Kyle bring, the technicians where able to pinpoint any type of issue that surfaced and the exact reasons why it occurred. It wasn't the pilot fault in the least, after all the mechanics where given damaged Zakus captured in heavy fighting so despite their best effort there would be some really serious performance flaws. Not to mention since this was Kyle first time it would take some getting used to. Overall everything performed within the parameters set up before hand. " Its because you're firing on the move! and its also a 360mm bazooka there will be some heavy recoil regardless." Lt. Commander Von Witzland snagged the radio away from the chief of mechanic hands in order to reply to Ensign Driscoll inquiry regarding the excessive recoil of the bazooka. " Goddamned reservist!" Groaned the irate woman not believing that even after all this training Kyle was still pretty much a green horn. Once the practice was over the truck crew began making hand signals to Kyle letting him know how to set up the Zany in the truck so they could recover it. Once he opened up the hatch Marina couldnt help but facepalm hard at the display, however The technicians where able to gather a lot of useful motion data on this tests alone and the weapon testing served its propose perfectly. It was a victory for the federation research and development bureau in every sense of the word , so no one really paid attention to the cadet rather childish behavior. " Just set it down. we're done for today." Von Witzland really had no reason to nag at this point. They had another practices schedules for the next day as well and after that wide range of motions the Zanny would have to be taken for period maintenance. |

Kyle slipped back into his Zanny, guiding it over to the trailer and carefully laying it down. The mechanics could see him climb out, his flight suit was tied around his waist. "Hey! If I broke anything could you let me know? I'll come help fix it.." he told the head chief. He didn't exactly pilot the unit how he thought it was going to go. The worry he might have broke something made he feel guilty for causing work for the mechanics. Whether he got an answer or not, he walked over to Von Witzland, having given the mechanics his thanks and offered his support. "Lt. Commander.." he said with a quick snap of a salute. "The Zanny is a, difficult machine." he said as he began debriefing his experience. "I apologize for the exaggerated movements of the machine, it did not handle anything like the manual indicated." he was being honest here. He spent a full week in training for the machine, it just didn't seem like it moved like it should have. "I learned that I'll need to practice harder to master this machine, but its a good machine regardless." he finished. He was about to leave and he looked back. "Umm also, I'm sorry for not shooting the weapons properly. Is there a range I could go to practice so I can get better?" he knew he was just a novice and asking for more training was important since he was also the first pilot they selected. "I don't want to embarrass you again." he said in a guilty tone. It must come from his young nature, making his hard working superior embarrass was something shameful. |

" looks in a good condition I don't think you broke anything, son."Replied master sergeant Marlowe while strapping down the frame of the Zanny to the flatbed truck with the help of a few other mechanics. In case a part broke down the Zanny was installed with a program that would automatically make it unresponsive to the pilot commands in order to prevent anymore damage, it was merely a temporary measure- a software that had been installed according to the parameters of the test and nothing more, and would be subsequently removed on later stages. Marina was with the rest of the technicians. Returning the salute accordingly and listening attentively to Kyle input regarding his experience operating the heavy machinery. From the looks of it the people taking notes behind Von Witzland didnt looked too surprised, as if they knew this level of performance was expected. Von Witzland weirdly enough offered him a smile, a rather soft one as she kept listening to his pouty explanations.Truth to be told she was expecting much worse. " With the data obtained today these gentlemen will be able to develop a virtual simulator using a cockpit we've stripped from a Zaku II it would take sometime, though." The time frame they where looking at was two or three days at most. " Regardless that was a good execution from your part, ensign. I'll grant you a leave until tomorrow in the afternoon before we continue with the scheduled test." Von Witzland felt it was appropriate to 'reward' Kyle with a leave for the time being in order to kick back, maybe go to one of Jaburo's bars, get blind drunk and sleep until late or get a piece of ass in there. A little gesture of appreciation after completing this important test. |

Kyle was left thinking about whether he did a good job or not with the Zanny. His commanding officer gave him some time off till tomorrow night, he decided to take a break. Heading out to a Jaburo bar, he got himself some drinks and hung around a bit. Though it wasn't his kind of setting, since everyone there was talking about how the war was going. Taking his drinks, he went outside and stared off into the caverns of Jaburo. "I need to get better, hopefully that simulator will be done fast." he told himself as he downed his drink. "Well guess I'll head back for now." he said to himself heading back to his room and crashing in for the night. He slept in the next day, take the time relax. Beyond some light studying and going to the bar there wasn't much else to do at the base. So the time passed slowly as the end of his leave came. Kyle being prepared for the next set of tests he was going to run. |

The young pilot wasn't the only person who'd earned a slightly prolonged rest. After signing the report from the technicians in charge of gathering motion and weapon data Lieutenant Von Witzland casually vanished. For once the only assignment left on her once cluttered agenda was the Zanny test run for the following day which meant she could finally get more than four hours of sleep, however all this running around, yelling and complaining had left the middle aged woman craving for a drink. On a normal occasion she would have dressed more appropriately for a social outing yet right now all she wanted was having a couple of drinks and after getting light buzz go back to her sleeping quarters and forget about everything until the next morning. Upon arriving at the bar which currently looked rather empty she sat by the counter in one of the bar stools just as Kyle was coming back from a trip to the men's room. Since there weren't many costumers she immediately got the bar tender attention who served Marina her usual drink: A salty bloody Mary just the way she liked it. In less than two gulps the thirsty woman drank it all not seeming to care how unladylike she was acting right now and ordered another one, this time drinking it in a more 'relaxed' fashion, licking the salt off her rosy lips with delight. |

Kyle really wasn't sure what he was seeing when he came out of the bathroom. Honestly he was struck between fear and arousal because his commanding officer was out of normal attire. He looked around, first out of protective instinct some poor soul might try to endanger himself by making a pass at her. He then carefully walked over and took a seat next to her. "Uh Lt.Commander?" he asked her carefully. "You seem to have a pretty high drink count there." he said with the bluntness of a stone. "You uh, haven't sent anyone to the hospital yet have you?" he asked her. Pointing at all the drinks on the counter and looking to the barkeep. "Please tell me she didn't do all of that in just a hour or so..." he looked a bit worried. Of course alot of this was spurred on by his own drinking. He couldn't hold his drinks and thus was buzzed off a couple of light drinks.

" I thought I sent you on leave, you can call me by my name when we are off duty." Marina replied with a sultry look before taking another quick sip off her ice cold glass, her tongue lingering on the edges of the glass loving the taste of the sea salt around it. " This is just my second drink right here. Dont try to act like you outrank me, punk." That alluring look on her face was quickly replaced by a mildly annoyed one as the young man kept ranting on. Surely she was a strict officer but the way Kyle spoke of her as if she was a brute was really offensive and quickly grating her nerves. " i'll be sending you to the brig if you keep this up." Those fiery ruby eyes of hers stared right back at his. Surely she could take a few jokes but this was getting out of hand. " I can do however I damn place." That last sentence oozed with disdain. |

Kyle looked a bit worried, but then he turned to the counter. "Give me two of what she is having!" he got a competitive look. "I'll put you in your place!" he would snatch up the first drink and chug it. Then grab the second and chug that one, grinning toward her. "Think you can keep up with me?" he asked her. He was picking a fight with her now, no games. "Give me the strongest one.." he tapped the bar watching his commander. "Well you going to fight me now, Miss Von Witzland?" he issues the challenge directly. The drink was put in front of him and he grabbed it holding it toward her. |

" you'll end up sick of your stomach if you keep drinking these at that pace, Kyle." Marina seemed to barely notice the challenge. " Cut it out or i'll call the Military Police and have them take you to a nice containment cell to spend the night in." Firmly warned the older woman feeling in the mood to have some peace and quiet instead of listening to a drunken cocky pilot she'd just made. Regardless if he wanted to buy her a drink this was fine and all so she took the glass of crimson liquid from his hands and set it in the counter nearby, stirring it with her pinky finger after putting the slice of lime on the rim of the glass inside. Afterwards she licked her own finger in a very suggestive way. " its up to you where you want to spend the night." |

Kyle watched his command take the drink, he wasn't drunk enough to not heed her warning though. But the thing that got him, was her suggested finger licking. The poor newly ranked ensign blushed, turning toward the counter. "Just a glass of water.." he asked politely and kind of sat there all quiet like. Sipping on his drink as he didn't want to get send to the brig for being a loud drunk. he would glance over to his commander here and there. He slowly rested his head on the counter as he was in a bit of thought, his buzz lingering. |

" Thanks for the extra round." With a sultry smile Marina once more diverted her attention at the nice, salty and savory drink she liked so much. Next she produced a silvery cigarette case she kept in one of the breast of her black uniform and began smoking leisurely making sure to put all the burn out remains in the ashtray closest to her. " Good Boy." She would reply when Kyle would turn around to glance in her direction like a sad puppy. Driscoll was an officer now, getting drunk in a bar was acceptable but not to the point of getting obnoxiously loud. This was after all a establishment where only other soldiers went and if one of the higher up caught Kyle pulling some sort of stunt it would end up with him demoted and washing toilet rooms for the rest of his career or assigned to a penal battalion. |

Kyle sat there, cooling off from his buzz with the occasional glance to Marina. "Why did you join the Federation?" the question was out of no where. Maybe it was the fruit flavored drinks, but he was getting curious. He waited for another glass of water as he sat up, patting his lap. "I joined cause I didn't exactly have anything else to do with my life." he laughed. "Thought I might get a good adventure out of being a soldier." he smiled and looked at the counter. "A boyish dream I guess, huh Miss Von Witzland?" he asked her. |

" You could say it was an impulse. my ancestors where once soldiers. My great grandfather was a German officer, he was killed in Stalingrad but his letters where kept by my family even after they moved to Austria escaping the communist regime where we finally settled. I was born into a wealthy family so whenever I wanted something I just had to snap my fingers and get it. I just wanted something ... More." Marina had no reason to be so secretive, however there where things she kept anyone from knowing including Kyle. With that info now out she smoked her cigarette, frequently sipping the bloody Mary. " thats it for me, I have more than three itll make my stomach upset." |

Kyle listened quietly to his Commander give her story behind her reason. Nodding every few words and taking a sip from his second glass of water. "I suppose that is all it takes to want to join." he rubbed his neck as he mulled over her words. Setting the glass down, he sat up in his seat and looked to the ceiling. "Well I can say so far it's all been worth it." his hands clasped together. "Though I've not seen much live combat, so maybe I haven't earned the right to say that yet." he was confused in his thoughts. |

Unlike other people Marina was very eager to go back to the front lines. It wasnt very difficult to tell Kyle wouldnt be so eager after getting his first taste of real combat, or maybe she was just judging the green pilot. He could also die during the first exchange of fire a thought that didnt really concerned her. Marina had little to no regards for human life, much less her own. Just imagining the agonizing screams, the smell of burnt out flesh and the echos of fire arm detonations was making her blush with arousal. That last comment of Kyle caused the older , blonde woman to smile in amusement, a soft giggle escaping those lips covered in natural pink gloss. " Or you could stick to being a test pilot?" Surely the option in some cases was out of their hands but with the right connections Kyle could stay out of the war, it certainly wouldnt help if he volunteered for combat duty once the Zanny program ended. |

Kyle slumped in his seat, pouting about his lack of fighting experience. "If I stayed a test pilot, would I be contributing as much as the others?" he sounded a bit worried. Honestly he didn't mind the prospect, but what worried him was respect. "Am I coward for sticking to such a task, where I don't face the risk of losing my life as often?" he was thinking too much about it honestly. He looked up and motioned to the bar tender, "Something strong, help me stop thinking about this." he asked. The joys of being young and not quite having a full grasp on everything you could. |
