"San Jose control to Akula," the ground controller contacted the bridge of the Akula, "New orders. Disembark your MS while our technicians refuel your tanks and carry out a quick retrofit. We're going to increase your hangar capacity to four MS. While that's going on, Lt. Chen's Zaku will need sand filters installed. Estimated time will be an hour or two so you can shut down and disembark the crew as well." Franz listened closely to this. Sand filters? That meant they were heading somewhere arid. As the ramp dropped, Franz disengaged the locks on his Zaku's holding frame. "Bridge, stepping off now," he reported. As the Zaku took its first steps off, Franz saw a technician waving lights to guide him to a specific spot where orange-jacketed techs waited with various bits. Once in position, he shut down the Zaku's systems and opened the pilot's hatch to climb out. The first thing to hit him was the warm, dry air. It felt nothing like the controlled, comfortable air from the colonies. Weather and climate... Two things that had not really been accounted for. How many weather men did the military have? After all, what use were climatologists in space colonies? There was no weather to predict since it was set by the weather control. More handicaps, Franz noted. None of them were major enough to offset the superior Zeon hardware but if taken together and if the Feddies start finding a way to use MS... it could become dangerous. "Bright out here," Franz commented to no one in particular, shielding his eyes from the sun. Yet another thing that he had not foreseen. Glare from the sun. |

Corporal Ronan Murphy looked up at his parked MS-06J Zaku II Ground Type which the technicians where going over. It was one of the variants which he had been lucky enough to become the pilot of and he was proud of it. Such wonderful engineering he thought, and of course they made suits before the Feddies could. He had been brought to San Jose base after finishing up in the academy having done particularly well. Recently he had been informed he would be attached to a MS team. Things seemed to be moving so fast, but Ronan was confident in his ability to keep out and succeed. Wiping his head he looked to his jacket which he was now holding. This weather were things he was not used to. Nothing like he had expected having gone from the comfortable controlled colony to here. But he had no doubt that he could not triumph over this slight inconvenience. Though some of the things freaked him out like some of the wildlife. He glanced over and noticed the Lieutenant and smirked before walking over. As he walked over Ronan straightened out his uniform quickly wanting to make a good first impression. Having approached he straightened up and saluted Franz as his superior officer."Sir, I was assigned to your mobile suit team." he would say starting with the formalities.

Franz saluted the newcomer. Great. So he had a mobile suit team. But who was this man and what was he assigned to do? Franz waited for the rest of the introduction but nothing came. So he decided to chastise the new man before the Her Majesty, Captain Rune, did so. "Normally you introduce yourself, Corporal, with name, rank, and position when addressing a superior officer so that we know who you are as well." Franz spoke sternly to the young man. "Obviously military etiquette is being cut in favor of getting pilots out fast so we will have to make do with what we have and make sure you," Franz looked straight at Ronan, "are aware of the basics. Because that is what Captain Celestia Rune expects. A military run on pre-war standards mixed with her strange sense of decorum." The older man took a deep breath before delving into the next two questions. "What MS do you have and how many Feddies have you killed with it. Tanks, planes, ships. I don't care about infantry or bunkers." He guessed that the corporal was as green as his pilot suit. If he was part of the pre-war crowd, he'd have known how to introduce himself and had more bravado, less deference. And as an MS pilot, Franz would probably have heard of him. Chances were good that this was a young man without any combat experience. Still, his attitude was slightly better than the abrasive, almost pompous attitude that Her Majesty The Captain demanded. Franz had spent very little time getting to know the ship's captain. She had not, surprisingly, asked him to meet with her beyond their initial encounter. Franz shivered at the idea of going into combat with her ship guarding his back. |

Corporal Ronan Murphy blinked as Franz chastised him having not expected that, as most of the people he had met where decently lax on that sort of thing. He might of rebutted with that if he was dumb and wanted to make enemies, but he didn't which was probably a good idea. When the man finished talking he said nothing for a moment before clearing his throat."I apologize sir, I am Ronan Murphy, Corporal, MS Rifleman." he said with that last part coming out a bit slow and awkward."My MS is the MS-06J Zaku II Ground Type." he said lighting up a little upon saying the name of his mobile suit."I haven't gotten a chance to take any Feddies down yet though sir, but it's only a matter of when and where at this point I figure." he said. |

The Captain had retired to her quarters, something she did on a regular basis whenever she could, relegating command over to the next in command, which was the XO of the Akula. Though the Captain herself wasn't around to be informed of their new orders, the Executive Officer would most definitely pass the message on whenever the chance came up. Reaching over for the intercom, Lieutenant Rune announced the news. "All hands, stand down from general quarters, repeat, stand down from general quarters. All non-essential personnel are to disembark from the Akula and await further orders; shore leave authorized. Time on deck is fourteen twenty-three; on deck, Section Five. Personnel that have left the ship are to report in to their Department heads no later then sixteen thirty, this afternoon." With a click, the intercom went silent and those deemed "non-essential" to the operation of the ship and the refit to come, filed off the ship into their first real taste of natural air, atmosphere, gravity and sunlight. Those that remained on board were the engineers and the lead engineer himself of which the responsibility was laid unto them to ensure that the modifications made to the Akula went smoothly and assist wherever possible. Leaving the communications and systems officer's on the bridge to ensure any urgent messages would be relayed to the Captain, the Lieutenant herself decided to go down and witness their once home planet, Earth. Perhaps mingle a bit with gravity, she mused as she took the elevator down. Some time later, she stepped out of the ship for the first time in months and looked about. The wind blew against her cheek, bringing with it the scent of gasoline, metal and smoke. The area around was littered with refuse and debris from the battle which took place here not so long ago. The air didn't feel as clean as a colony's artificial life support, but, there was no doubt a rustic charm about the place that no orderly colony could deliver. Rune looked towards the hangars, a make-shift area of which undoubtedly housed the mobile suits and the technicians responsible for them. She headed towards them. It would be nice to see whom she would be responsible for keeping alive. It did not take her long to find them, one's posture was both composed and rigid, speaking of a man that fought in the initial battles that brought Zeon here in the first place and gained valuable experience and a veteran's status. The other appeared almost aloof, though his grin and the way his gaze rested upon the older veteran spoke of an eager and honest desire to fight. Stopping just short of the two, she would announce herself. "Hello gentlemen. I assume you two are mobile suit pilots, yes? Am I interrupting anything?" |

Before Franz could fully process what he had heard from the new corporal, they were interrupted by Her Majesty The Captain. Franz spun sharply on his heels, snapped them together and saluted. He moved as though the motion was something he did all his life. The muscle memory from years of pre-war service was displayed through the ease with which Franz saluted. It was crisp and tight but also controlled. There was no wavering, no rush to get through the motions. He held his salute until she dropped hers. "No, ma'am. Simply getting acquainted with the newest member of our MS team and overseeing the changes being done to my own suit," Franz replied, gesturing first to Ronan and then to his own hulking black Zaku. The black would have acted as visual camouflage while space. Now? Franz just thought he would stand out like a sore thumb if they were deploying to a desert region. "Corporal Smith has just been given orders to join my MS team. However, I have not yet received confirmation that I would be given command of a team. So we are just waiting for the paperwork to catch up." That part was true too. Ace pilots tended to be used to either lead a MS or continue to serve in detached roles where they could be assigned to a position, unit, etc. on an ad hoc basis. In the latter case, it allowed proven resources to be used as valuable troubleshooters in critical situations. Franz suspected that this policy meant that Zeon was indeed being stretched to its limit and the policy of detaching ace pilots was the only means for high command to keep its pressure on the Feddies. Alternately, having ace pilots leading MS teams allowed them to pass their experience and learning onto newer, younger pilots who would benefit from the experience of older hands. The problem was that it was a lot more difficult to move an MS team and its necessary maintenance crew about so they were generally integrated into the larger front-line formations. A single MS and pilot could simply impose on the demands of a unit's technicians for what would be a temporary, short term arrangement. And if the ace was as good as advertised, the only things needed might simply be ammunition and weapon replacements. If Franz was going to be put in charge of a MS team, he would have felt more comfortable knowing about it before he had come to Earth and if he had been provided greater details about it beforehand. Right now, it just felt like another ad hoc mash up to create another unit. Hopefully his third pilot would be more experienced so that Franz could focus more on leading than on nurturing Corporal Smith. |
