If you've gotten this far, then you have successfully signed up for our global studies forum! Congratulations. Now that you are here, I have a link to an interactive map website that you will use to begin discussion. For today's lesson, you will follow the instructions below in order to explore some of the reasons that our earliest societies happened where they did. Step 1: watch the following video on youtube. John Green is an excellent resource, but he talks kind of fast when he gets excited. I encourage you to stop the video while you answer questions or even rewind if something sounds important. Step 2: answer the following questions by posting making a post to this thread. The easiest way is to type your answers into the fast reply box at the bottom. question 1: John green gives many different examples of things that make a civilization, specifically that there should be 4 or more "symptoms" Name at least three of these (I counted 8). Which one of these things do you think is most important and why? question 2: What natural landmark does John Green say occurs near most ancient civilizations? Why do you think this landmark is important? question 3: John Green says we create civilization / make laws because people are "clingy and scared" and that rules make us feel safe. Do you think that this is the most important reason that we form civilizations or do you disagree? Why? question 4: What did you find most interesting about the video? Step 3: Once you have answered the questions, submit your post to the forum. Last, I want you to find a post from another classmate and reply to that comment. (click the orange quote button in the bottom right corner of their post) You can point out something they said that you like and why, something that you disagree with and why, or you can add an extra detail, or even ask a question about something. Remember, a forum is a great way to learn and express your opinion, but it needs to be done correctly. No put downs, be positive, stay on topic, and all HAST internet policy rules apply. I will be checking up on the forum all day to make comments and monitor posts, feel free to ask me anything if you need me to clarify. Looking at other people's posts is not cheating, but, if you don't support your answers with facts from the video or provide your own opinion, I will be able to tell. Once you have completed all three steps you are done for the day! enjoy your long weekend! I will be outside as much as possible. Edited by bchambers, Aug 30 2015, 08:47 PM.
