The sexuality section is mainly the view point of the holders and weyrfolk- Very few dragonets consider sexuality when they impress. If a gay character fits a gold more then a straight character, she will not have her dragon taken away because of her sexuality, nor will the gold's color be changed. On the topic of the new colors, remember that they are new and that the stated Impression preferences are hardly law. If you have any concerns about this, please PM an admin.

Original Colors

Golds

Gold dragons, also called Queens, are the largest of any dragon color. Gold dragons are by far the rarest dragons on Pern, at just less than 1% of the population. They are the most intelligent of dragons and they are dominant over all other colors; any non-gold dragon will invariably obey a queen's orders, even against the wishes of its own rider. Queens are incapable of digesting firestone and producing flame; however, they do fight Thread - they fly in the lowest wing, with their riders armed with specially designed flamethrowers to flame any Thread missed by the above wings. An egg that is going to hatch a gold dragon is notable: It is gold-colored and larger than other eggs. A gold dragon will always Impress a heterosexual female and are believed by most Weyrfolk to prefer young women who were not raised in the Weyr. Golds are the leaders of any Weyr, and as such they are often arrogant, possess great leadership qualities, and can easily become aggressive if their Weyr is in danger. They are especially possessive of males during and around the time of their mating flight and of their eggs after they've clutched, and will not hesitate to turn to violence if either of these things are threatened. Golds are the largest and most impressive of dragons and require strong, capable riders to keep their powerful personalities in check.

Gender: Female only
Impress to: Heterosexual females with strong leadership capabilities and the skills to think for the best of the Weyr.
Size: 40-45 feet
Rises: Beginning at two Turns of age; once a Turn during a Pass; once every three or four Turns during an Interval; by admin approval only.
Clutch: 10-20 Eggs during an Interval and 20-40 during a Pass - All colors appear in gold clutches; mutation ranks only appear if both parents carried the illness.

Bronzes

Bronze dragons are the largest males, yet they are generally significantly smaller than queens. Bronzes consist of about 5% of all dragons, being the second most rare of dragons on Pern. They are almost always the ones to mate with queens, as the smaller colors generally lack the stamina to chase and catch the gold dragons when they rise to mate. Due to the 5-1 bronze/gold ratio and the infrequency of gold mating flights, they often mate with greens, but their size often puts them at a disadvantage in chasing the agile, smaller females. The senior bronze of a Weyr is determined through which bronze wins the mating flight of the senior gold. Bronzes are just as intelligent as golds are, and the senior bronze of a Weyr has higher standing than any other dragon besides the senior gold. Arrogant, princely and self-assured, a bronze will only Impress to a heterosexual male who shares their drive for ambition and ability to lead even in turbulent situations.

Gender: Male only
Impress to: Heterosexual males with strong confidence and leadership capabilities.
Size: 37-42 feet
Chases: Beginning at one and a half Turns of age; any color female.

Posted Image
Browns

Brown dragons are the next largest color, spanning from 34-39 feet. About 15% of all dragons are brown, making them more common than golds and bronzes combined. Browns are the stable peacekeepers of the Weyr; they have naturally mellow, responsible demeanors that make them the perfect ranks for Weyrlingmaster, Wingleader or Wingsecond positions. However, they are usually not true leaders, so they are better suited to staying in the background. Their devotion and loyalty to whatever they deem worth protecting more than makes up for their preference of avoiding the spotlight, and they are some of the most valuable dragons in the Weyr. Browns may occasionally mate with queens, although this is rare due their size disadvantage against bronzes, so they usually mate with greens instead. Almost all brownriders are male; most are heterosexual, yet some are "masculine" bisexual or homosexual men. Female browndriers are almost unheard of, although it occasionally does happen.

Gender: Male only
Impress to: Heterosexual Males or "masculine" bisexual or homosexual men occasionally bisexual women, usually those who share their calm, patient personalities or who need to be calmed by their levelheadedness.
Size: 30-35 feet
Chases: Beginning at one and a quarter Turn of age; any colored female.

Posted Image
Blues

Blue dragons are the smallest males, ranging from 25-30 feet, and make up about a third (30%) of all dragons on Pern. They are nearly as agile as greens, but unlike the greens, they often have enough stamina to last for an entire Threadfall. Their ability to fly quickly and escape from clumps of stray Thread make them invaluable fighters for flying Wings even though they don't pack quite as much power as browns or bronzes. They mate only with greens, as they are simply too small to keep up with a massive queen over a long mating flight. However, blues are naturally empathetic in nature, and are especially sensitive when it comes to detecting possible candidates for dragon Impression. They often accompany greens on Searches, as larger dragons aren't as acute to the mental sensitivity required to attract a hatchling dragon. Blues commonly Impress to men of any sexuality, though often homosexual or bisexual, but it is not uncommon for them to choose homosexual or bisexual women as riders.

Gender: Male only
Impress to: Any sexuality male and sometimes bisexual or homosexual women; blues tend to choose riders who share their sensitivity and empathy, or those who can appreciate a good joke and coincide well with their lighthearted natures.
Size: 25-30 feet
Chases: Beginning at one Turn of age; only greens.

Greens

Green dragons are the smallest normal color, and are the most common dragons, making up about half of all dragons on Pern (50%). They are female, but unlike the queens, they are infertile and chew firestone to produce flame. Greens are extremely valuable in Threadfall because of their agility, but they lack the stamina to last an entire 'Fall and generally fly in two or three shifts. They rise for mating flights typically four times per Turn, and are notorious for being very sexual creatures. A rider of a green dragon is expected to be aware of what this implies and open to having many different sexual partners, because greens rarely choose just one mate. Like blues, they are very sensitive to possible dragon candidates and are the most common dragon to send on Search. Greens usually Impress to females, but are also known to choose homosexual men as partners.

Gender: Female only
Impress to: Any sexuality women or homosexual men. Because greens' personalities are so varied, it's hard to say exactly what they look for in a rider.
Size: 20-25 feet
Rises: Beginning at one Turn of age; 4 times a Turn.

White

Whites are dragons that appear rarely so very little is known about them. They are the smallest dragons in any Weyr and also the most mysterious. They are genderless, and experience no urge to mate, although they usually identify themselves as either male or female. They possess excellent betweening skills and are quite intelligent, even able to between through time if the situation arises. Their hides are the most mysterious; they are always a pale, perfect white color, but have hints of all the other five colors in their hide.

Gender: Genderless
Impress to: Unknown
Size: 15-18 feet
Rises/Chases: Do not rise or chase.

New Colors
  • The above five colors have been the only colors on Pern for dragonkind's entire existence. However, since a mysterious new illness has appeared in the young Weyr of Heartland, new colors have emerged. No one knows what this means, and very little is known about these mutations, but they have been accepted into the Weyr only because they appear to be no danger to the Weyr itself. What lies in the future for these mysterious new dragons is unknown.

Diamond

The second ranking females of Heartland, and the highest ranking mutation to date, diamonds are only slightly smaller than their gold sisters, coming in at 38-42 feet. They have similar builds to the gold queens, being muscular but still graceful on land and in air. These dragons hold themselves with an air of quiet confidence and are the most level-headed of the queen ranks. However, some also fall within the personality range of golds and can be moody and aggressive to calm and motherly and anywhere in between. Like golds, they are extremely rare dragons, making up less than 1% of the population. A diamond's hide is a sight to behold: a dark, chalky gray or a glossy white or off-white hide with misty swirls of gray or other colors all across it. Their hides glimmer when caught in the light and shine with beautiful pastel colors, becoming a shocking sight when the queen is about to rise for a mating Flight. These colors range from pale blues to pale pinks and so on but are always pastel in tone. Looking at a the hide of one of these beauties is like looking at a diamond without being able to see through it. They have the ability to order around any rank below them, although some younger golds will also listen to older diamonds.

Gender: Female only
Impress to: Heterosexual females with strong leadership abilities, often those who complement their own personalities well.
Size: 38-42 feet
Rises: Beginning at two Turns of age; once a Turn and a half during a Pass; once every four or five Turns during an Interval; by admin approval only.
Clutch: 5-10 eggs during an Interval and 12-25 during a Pass - All colors except gold may appear in diamond clutches; mutation ranks appear if one or both parents carry the illness or if the father is also a mutated rank.

Obsidian

A subqueen, lesser than both golds and diamonds, obsidians come in at third rank. These dragons are the darkest of the queens. Streamlined and sleek, these dark beauties are arrows in the sky despite their bulk. They come in at 35-39 feet of muscle, claws and sharp teeth and they aren't afraid to use them. Unlike the higher ranking queens, obsidians are aggressive and extremely territorial as well as ambitious. They are also short tempered and the most moody of any female rank. Like the other queens they make up less than 1% of the population, being extremely rare. Obsidians do not hold influence over golds or diamonds but anything below bronze is fair game. And these dark queens love to play mind games and extend the mental claws of their social standing; less confident or intelligent dragons are often victims of their predatory personality, and even their rider can fall prey if they cannot handle their queen's strong personality.

Gender: Female only
Impress to: Females of any orientation that are ambitious leaders and strong willed.
Size: 36-39 feet
Rises: Beginning at two Turns of age; once a Turn and a half during a Pass; once every three or four Turns during an Interval; by admin approval only.
Clutch: 4-8 eggs during an Interval and 10-18 during a Pass - All colors except gold and diamond may appear in obsidian clutches; mutation ranks appear if one or both parents carry the illness or if the father is also a mutated rank.

Garnet

The last and the smallest of the queen ranks, garnets are the sweethearts of the Weyr. At only 30-35 feet, they are smaller than the lower ranked bronzes and brass dragons, however they still hold power over the males and any other lower ranked dragons. Indeed, they may be small for queens, but they more than make up for it. Elegant, slim and streamlined, these females are a sight to see in the skies and on the ground. They are surprisingly agile and quick for their size, and their mating Flights are often a grueling mix of both endurance and agility. Personality wise, they are the calmest of the queens and the most motherly, tending to take everyone around them under their care and protection. Garnets are the only queens who can choose to chew firestone, as they do not experience the same allergy to 'stone as the other queens do. Although most garnets choose one or the other, it is possible for them to switch between having clutches and fighting in Threadfall. Those who flame fly in the fighting Wings among other dragons. Garnets are not ambitious in the least and only wish to help others. They naturally tend to those who are weaker than themselves and who need to be comforted.

Gender: Female only
Impress to: Garnets choose riders who need their motherly nature and affection regardless of gender or orientation.
Size: 30-35 feet
Rises: Beginning at two Turns of age; once a Turn during a Pass; once every two or three Turns during an Interval; by admin approval only.
Clutch: 1-5 eggs during an Interval and 5-8 during a Pass - All colors below garnet may appear in garnet clutches except for bronze; mutation ranks appear if one or both parents carry the illness or if the father is also a mutated rank.

Brass

The highest ranked males after bronzes, brasses are similar in coloration to their only slightly larger brothers. They are the same size as their bronze counterparts, coming in at 35-39 feet, however their builds place them more along the lines of browns than bronzes. Like browns, brasses are steady, level-headed hard workers, muscular but lacking quite the amount of pure brute strength bronzes have. They are very dependable dragons and make excellent Wingleaders, -seconds, or -thirds. They are not ambitious creatures, and prefer order and peace to social drama, but are more natural leaders than browns and tend to hold more ranking positions than the more arrogant males. You will not find these dragons gossiping or listening to idle chatter because they cannot stand to be idle for long. Brasses get along surprisingly well with bronzes and onyxes outside of Flights. They can match bronzes hour for hour during Threadfall and during queen Flights, making them as worthy competitors for Weyrleader positions as bronzes.

Gender: Male only
Impress to: Males of any orientation, most often those who are calm and levelheaded yet still natural leaders like themselves.
Size: 35-40 feet
Chases: Beginning at one and a half Turns of age; any color female.

Posted Image
Onyx

As dark and harsh as their name suggests, onyx dragons are the black and mysterious gems of the new ranks along with their obsidian sisters. These dark males are just as ambitious and hot-tempered as obsidians. Though generally smaller than the other metallic males, they are tanks, compact and muscular and rivaling the strength and endurance of browns. At an average length of 28-33 feet, these brutes seem to be all muscle but they also sport the intelligence and cunning of their dark sisters with an arrogant demeanor to boot. With ambition matching and often even outranking bronzes, they chase after high-ranked queens despite their smaller statures and rash, irresponsible personalities. They aren't often chosen by the highest of queens because their dangerous natures aren't fit to run a Weyr, however their ferocity and determination win them a number of mating Flights. The scope of a rider an onyx dragon will choose is limited almost entirely to mature, ambitious males, and those who are just as dangerous as they can be when angered.

Gender: Male only
Impress to: Ambitious and quick-tempered heterosexual males and occasionally bisexual males as well.
Size: 28-33 feet
Chases: Beginning at one and a half Turns of age; any color female below obsidian. Often chase gold and diamond but don't often win.

Posted Image
Silver

Coming in at 27-31 feet, silvers are the next mutation in rank. They are built more like blues but with the stamina of browns, and at a size somewhere between a blue and a brown, it can be odd to place them in a category based on physical characteristics. Silvers have extremely large wings that tend to make them very awkward as hatchlings, however as they get older they soon figure out how to handle such large extremities. This is more difficult for some silvers than others, and many have a difficult time taking off of the ground, even after graduation. Feisty and temperamental, these males think they are all that and a bag of chips. They are as proud and as pushy as bronzes, more than making up for their size with their anything-you-can-do-I-can-too attitudes. Silvers easily last as long as browns and onxyes in a 'Fall though they tend to push themselves to prove they are better. Everything is a competition to these males and they never back down from a challenge.

Gender: Male only
Impress to: Heterosexual or bisexual females, or males of any orientation.
Size: 27-31 feet
Chases: Beginning at one and a quarter Turns of age; garnets and any female rank below, although many are daring enough to chase obsidian.

Posted Image
Pearls

The only mutation rank that can hatch either male or female, pearls are perhaps the most unique of the mutations. The females of this rank are just slightly larger than greens (23-27 feet) while the males are slightly smaller than blues (25-29 feet). The females are also built like greens, with lighter, thinner frames that make them just as agile and quick in the skies as their green sisters, and the males have the agility of the blues as well as their stamina. Pearls are generally sweet and nonviolent, having personalities similar to garnets and choosing riders who need caring companions. Just as their genders vary, so do their hides. Pearls commonly have pale, pretty light pink or blue hides, on females and males respectively, however other colors such as faint greens, yellows, and purples are also common. Every pearl has swirls of these colors over a soft white hide, making the dragon appear fragile and gentle, as is often the case with their personalities. While they still have the natural instinct to flame Thread, they are pacifistic in everything else, even mating Flights, preferring things be settled with as little violence as possible.

Gender: Male or female (50/50 ratio)
Impress to: Pearls display no preference to gender or orientation, though may be more inclined to choose the same gender as themselves.
Size: 25-29 feet for males and 23-27 feet for females.
Chases: Beginning at one Turn of age; only greens and female pearls.
Rises: Beginning at one Turn of age; four times a Turn.
