I am called...

Iotary
And I am here to prove myself...

General

.:Character Number:. Third
.:Age:. 15
.:Candidate For: Dragon
.:Rank:. Candidate, Apprentice Dolphineer
.:Gender:. Male
.:Orientation:. Bisexual
.:Name Honorific:. I'ary

In Depth
.:Personality:. Iotary is.... Well, he's something of a pessimist. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, and furthermore, it will go wrong in the worst way possible at the worst time possible. This hasn't really been built up by his life experiences - it's simply his nature. Another thing that comes naturally to him is sarcasm, which tends to serve as his little shield from anything he doesn't like, doesn't want to face, or simply isn't interested in in the slightest. In other words, he's sarcastic at least three-fourths of the time. He also has a rather high opinion of his own intelligence, which, admittedly, is not entirely unfounded. He often sees connections that others don't quite notice, and he understands people quite a bit. He makes a hobby of reading people, taking in body language and facial expressions to take accurate little snapshots of the mental, physical, and social status of the people around him. Though he understands people, he doesn't tend to care about them very much. He's very self-oriented, willing to do anything and everything to stay alive and, more importantly, as comfortable as possible. Being a dragonrider does not play into his plans for himself very well, unfortunately.

He honestly doesn't think much of his chances as a Candidate - he simply considers his time at Heartland to be an inconvenience, no more. He's simply waiting to age out and get on with his life, already. Obviously no dragon would pick him. After all, he's just some fisher kid from Nerat who wants to get on with his life. And he's pretty certain a dragon won't come to someone so dead-set against the bond they want to make. The fact that he could be wrong doesn't even cross his mind, most days. He's really rather arrogant, to be honest. And, even worse, he's also a hormonal teenager. He's gong through the exact same issues that anyone his age has been through, but with a higher IQ to back it. The problem with him is that hes convinced he's always right, and he's... Well, he's very rarely wrong, at least in matters of logic. So really, his belief in his own infallibility isn't that hard to understand. But one day, he is going to fail, and he is going to fail miserably. And he'll probably have a bit of a mental breakdown.

...On that note, he's something of a perfectionist.

Though he resents his parents and his family just as much as any teenager that has ever lived, he's also been brought up around the firm belief that whatever he is told to do Will Be Done. At least if it's his parents telling him to do it. Anyone else? No promises. But if the orders come from his family, he'll hop to it like a good soldier and only cuss 'em out behind their backs. (This is mostly because his mother scares the shit out of him, but eh. Details.) In fact, the only things he seems to hold any sort of affection for are his fire-lizard, dolphins, and the ocean itself. He has an affinity for the sea so strong that it has made many people assert that he should've been born a dolphin, himself. He still maintains that most dolphins are idiots, mind - nothing could shake his conviction that he is the most intelligent creature ever to be born - but he is actually tolerant of their 'idiocy'. In fact, he rather ignores it most of the time. The sea seems to be the only place that he can relax, allowing him to forget all his imagined teenage troubles and simply enjoy life as it is.

He misses the ocean like a dear friend.

.:Appearance:. Iotary is about 5'10'', and he's still growing, though the growthis starting to slow down. He'll probably settle at about 6'1'', by the rate of his growth... He's a long, gangly creature, still in the stage of the teenage years that's made of stubbed toes and oddly-proportioned limbs. His particular choice of exercise doesn't help too much with this. He's got a swimmer's build, made up of long, lean muscle, rather than the shorter, bulging musculature he would've gotten from lots of heavy lifting and hard work. The advantage to this is, of course, that he is surprisingly strong. One doesn't think that this thin boy could lay 'em flat as soon as look at 'em, but, oh, believe me, he can. His fingers might get broken, though, seeing as they're long, delicate things, which would probably would have been used better on a musician or a thief. At least they would have known what to use them for!

His skin is well-tanned from a life spent perpetually in sunlight, and his hands are crisscrossed with scars, some from fishhooks, some from the claws of ship's felines, and still others from a few accidental bites from his dolphin buddies. He has a delicately-boned face, with prominent cheekbones that give him a somewhat elegant look. His hair is deep, deep brown, (only distinguishable from black in the sunlight,) wavy, and kept long. When it's let loose, it reaches all the way to the middle of his back, but it is very rarely let loose. The fact that he hasn't cut it yet for ease of flying is one way he shows that he isn't exactly eager to get a dragon, however subtle a method it is. His hair is usually kept tied back in a loose ponytail, with a pair of long, thin braids coming from his temples. these braids are usually tied back into the ponytail itself, sometimes with beads woven into them as the mood strikes him.

He used to only care for the practicality of his clothing, but now he tends to wear cool colors. Though he'll never admit it, he wears such things because they remind him of home - a home he misses sorely.

.:History:. Iotary had a rather average beginning in life, all told - he was born in Nerat hod, to a pair of reasonably happy fishers. He had a nice little slew of siblings, all just as average as their parents. He was the youngest for a while, until yet another baby came along. All very.... Irritating. His parents were quite stern, though, and they had to be, with all those children. If you don't make certain they'll obey you, who knows what they'll be getting up to in a few years! Iotary, though he believed (as all children do) that he was quite a bit smarter than his parents, soon realized that disobedience was more trouble than it was worth and simply did as he was told. He was a decently happy child, for somebody without a single human friend to his name, but he soon turned surly. The only real problem with his life there, the big problem, was that he was so very bored all the time. So. Shaffing. Bored. Nobody was smart enough to prove interesting to him! So scorch 'em all and send 'em to between, that was what he said.

His family gave him a flitter, which he did care for quite a bit more than any human being, but it didn't help humanize him... Especially when that flitter turned out to be creepily thin, no matter how much Iotary fed him.

One day, while they were out fishing, the shipfish came to lead a catch into the nets. It was evident, simply from the way they moved, that they had made a proper plan about how to do this. Interesting... So Iotary headed to the Dolphin Bell as soon as they got back to shore, ringing it loudly enough for anyone to hear. The dolphins came, and he chatted with them - and, oddly enough, he found that he was actually tolerant of their stupidity. Quite a change from the humans, to say the least... He soon struck up a friendship with quite a few dolphins, especially one exceptionally intelligent individual named Serk. He apprenticed to become a dolphineer soon after, and his parents were quite relieved. Finally, the kid had found something he wanted to do in life! So he spent quite a few years perfecting his swimming technique, spending as much time in the water as possible while still staying healthy. He could soon swim almost as well as the dolphins he so loved.

And then, of course, the dragonriders came along and messed up all of his carefully-wrought plans. He'd been heading back home for a quick lunch, when he realized there was a Greenrider in town. He skirted the crowd, of course, but he couldn't do anything when the dragon herself looked up and said Hey, kid! Iotary? Yeah, you. You've just been Searched! And she'd broadcasted it, so everyone in the bloody town square could hear. His parents, of course, told him to go. And he refused. And then they made it an order, and he realized if he didn't go, they would make his life a living between on Pern. So he said his goodbyes to his dolphins and his Master, (Only the Master congratulated him, thankfully. Typical human. At least his dolphins knew how miserable he was.) packed his bags, and got on the shaffin' dragon.

Faranth knows he hates it, but he can wait until he ages out. He'll just be bored as shells until he does.

.:Other:. He can imitate quite a few of the more unintelligible dolphin noises, he likes felines, and he can see oddly clearly underwater.

Pet(s)

.:Pet Name:. Fishbones
.:Species:. Fire-lizard
.:Color:. Blue (ABCDCB)
.:Basic Appearance:. Fishbones is a strange creature, thin, sinuous, and emaciated. No matter how much Iotary feeds him, he never seems to gain much weight. He's a very pale blue, and quite plain besides that. His wings are very delicate-looking, almost translucent in nature, and the fingers look as if they could be snapped with the slightest bit of pressure. they're quite wide, allowing him quite a bit of lift when he flaps them. He looks almost like a flitterby, tumbling through the air currents on such huge wings...
.:Basic Personality:. Oddly intelligent, Obedient, Irritable, Silent, Huge appetite, Loyal, Lazy

Wherlingmaster Mafalda of Brown Mafaldask

"God does not play dice with the universe;
He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a dealer who won't tell you the rules,
and who smiles all the time."
