Who else has wanted to see a Gundam fight side by side against a stuffed animal against vaguely phallic space aliens? I have. For others with such an imaginative bent, I bring you SRWJ for the GBA. The Super Robot Wars series is known for bringing together many staples of the mecha genre, and other unheard of series, and bringing them into the same universe, entwining their storylines and creating a world that diehard mecha fans (like me) can jerk off to.

The SRW games are all turn-based strategy games, much like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars, in that the player moves, then the enemy, and then any third parties, wherein each unit can move, attack, or simply not move at all.

Before battle, you're allowed to pick and choose which units you'd like to bring out.

Then, once the battle starts, you try to fulfill the mission objectives, though the majority of these involve wiping out the enemy and preventing your flagship from being destroyed. All (allied) units are given the options of moving, attacking, and using spirit commands, each which can be used in a single turn, with spirit commands being used to give your unit an edge in battle.

If you choose to attack an enemy unit, you're given your choice of attacks to use against him. Should your unit be attacked, you're given three choices, attack, which allows your unit to counterattack, defend, which has your unit bracing for any damage, or evading, where your unit attempts to avoid the enemy onslaught.

Each attack is wonderfully animated, hearkening back to the shows each came from. You'll find G Gundam's Shining Finger, Mazinger Z's Breast Fire, or Voltes V's famous V-Slash. Some units are even able to team up with others, combining their strength into a devastating blow capable of one-shotting even boss units, though units that can team up tend to be from the same series, necessitating preferences among series. The music that plays during these battles are taken directly from each show, giving one an earful of pleasant nostalgia. Being a game that combines many shows into one game, this is very storyline-driven, but linearity is by no means a problem: there are many path-splits provided throughout and even on stages where the path is not split, killing an enemy unit could mean altering the storyline greatly. This brings me to another point: There are tons of secret characters. So many, you have absolutely no chance of getting them all in the same playthrough. Getting Great Zeorymer even locks you from getting any other units, though it is easily one of the most powerful mecha in the history of robotics. You'll have to playthrough the game at least three times to get all of them. This non-linearity even allows you to save the lives of characters who would have otherwise died in their own storylines (Like Gai from Nadesico). Basically, this is a game that I HAVE to make a big deal about when it's translated into English. You have to hand it to the translators, by no means could it have been easy to write all this into English. The text is well-written, though there are a few slight hiccups here and there. They've even managed to salvage Izumi's puns, which are by far my favorite part of this game ("Nadesico more like NaBESTico" being my favorite).

This game is probably not something you guys would like. If anything, only I will play this game (And I have been, for a whiiiiiile). Still, I'd recommend you give it a try. The game is challenging, but not frustratingly so, and it has inspired me to watch shows I would otherwise have never even heard of.
