Wasteland and Wasteland 2 beta are currently available on Steam early access, for backers the beta keys were sent out yesterday and the original wasteland was sent out a month or so ago I believe. In any case, being a pleb, I've been following Wasteland 2 but haven't actually backed. So I figured I'd do it through steam today, 60$ for the early access, comes with a copy of the original wasteland as well as a digital concept art book and some other shit. Anyways I don't feel ripped off having bought this overpriced pack because none of this game's profits are going to publishers, most will be going towards the devs and their future titles.(being a kickstarter and all.)

Since you may not know what Wasteland is, let me try to explain it with my limited knowledge. Wasteland is an old ass game from way before I was born. It's a post apocalyptic role playing sim where you control a group of four desert rangers, you explore the wasteland and shoot bad guys and solve puzzles and shieeet. It was apparently the game that spawned the Fallout series, because they lost the rights to develop a sequel they made Fallout instead. In any case, being a graphics whore I was kind of hesitant to put effort into trying a game that looks like this: Posted Image But apparently it's acclaimed as an RPG, and considered by some to be the best post apocalyptic RPG of all time.(OF ALL TIME) So I figured I'd play it while I wait for Wasteland 2 to download, will update this thread with may b some comments on the game.

Here's what the steam page says:
Spoiler: click to toggle

Had some trouble actually getting started and creating my rangers at first, it's really pretty unintuitive, but I forgive it because it was designed 2000 years ago. Music is great, fits the setting perfectly, post apolcalyptic western : I figure they replaced whatever 8 bit music they used to have in this game with that, there's also voice acting, and the portraits are decent resolution. Unfortunately for me, there doesn't seem to be an option for custom portraits. These are the rangers I made:
Tonka;Indian;Male
Highest rolled stats: max con, strength, agility
Skills: Climbing/brawling(He has super low skills because I had no idea what I was doing, clicked next on the menu and pretty much gimped him, didn't feel like trying to reroll so he stays an epic fail.)
Brain;Chinese;Male
Highest rolled stats: Charisma, Intelligence
Skills: Medic, Doctor, Perception, Confidence, Cryptology, Toaster repair
Raul;Mexican;Male
Highest rolled stats: Agility, Dexterity, Speed
Skills: Maxed assault rifles/pistols, combat shooting(W/e the fuck that is.), Acrobat
Veronica(This name is lame, but I already made her and didn't want to reroll.);Russian;Female
Highest rolled stats: Agility, Luck, Dexterity
Skills: Picklock, silent move, sleight of hand, Perception

Yeah, the attributes are based off of dice rolls, which I'm not a fan of, but whatever, at least you get to pick the skills. Which skills you get to choose are based off of how high your attributes are, all skills have a prerequisite stat requirement. Went with classic archetypes of tank, rogue, gunman, and diplomat. Melee characters are actually surprisingly effective, and despite having 0 skills, Tonka got the most kills and leveled up way faster than everyone else.(Got promoted to bawse, as is fitting.) Race choices are American, Russian, Chinese, Mexican, and Indian, I don't think they actually have any effect beyond being fun things to help you better imagine your character. I mspainted some shitty faces after I rolled all my rangers, but couldn't make portraits out of them.(May be W2 that has the option.):

Navigating the map is a bit silly at first, *refer to that little avatar up there*, I'd include screenshots along with deez comments but fraps doesn't work with this old ass game . In any case, the graphics were overshadowed by the threat of death, and of course the brilliant music. Combat scenarios consist of choosing each member of your party's actions, and then watching it play out in the text, it looks something like this: Posted Image, it's actually more exciting than it looks, mostly because you never know quite how it will play out because all turns(yours and enemies) happen in succession with no way to control after selecting. Evasion rarely worked for me so I stuck to attacking only. Veronica was the butt monkey, constantly getting knocked unconscious. The voice acting was pretty decent, and unexpected in a game like this, not all lines were VA, just the descriptions of areas. Writing is good from what I've experience, humour is VERY campy, although I'm sure I have tons more of the game to go. Unfortunately, after exploring a couple of the base areas I encountered a group of mutants that mercilessly pummeled my whole squad into obvlivion, the bright colors kind of bugged my eyes after a bit and I took a break..

Wasteland 2 is now finished downloading, and a quick look into the character creator gives me directions for custom portraits...So going touch up, resize my portraits now, will mess around with W2, since it's a beta I'm sure it will be short, then get back to W1.

Also, discuss Wasteland here, your experiences(if you've had them) expectations, or anything else. I don't know if I can recommend the game at that price, if you want to support the devs that made Fallout, and have the disposable income then I'd say go for it.

My wasteland 2 rangers and their portraits, they actually are recognizable in game, character creation happened to have almost all of their looks, receding hairline, headdress, vaquero, etc. As well it uses the same nationalities as the first game. Stats aren't dice rolled this time, which is awesome, skills seem more or less the same.

I'm playing on max resolution/graphics, photobucket just likes to shrink my pictures because it's shit. Need to find better image hosting.

Holy shit I forgot about this thread!

Nah not curry indians, murican indians.

Anyhow, this game is pr fun, wouldn't recommend picking it up right yet because it can get buggy as fuck. Since the release they've actually changed quite a bit, HoT for example, used to be a feature but was removed due to negative reception. Character creation is still one of my favourite part of the game, making your rangers is much better than in 1. Most of the skills and attributes are useful, exceptions being Charisma as of right now, only 1 ranger needs it from what I can tell.

Charismatic characters aren't limited to speechcraft/barter, they also have leadership skill which increases effectiveness of party members in their vicinity.

Weapons are decently varied, EW do more damage the higher armor rating you have.(Something like it turns the armor into an oven that cooks the faggot wearing the armor.) This game actually gets melee right, which i find rare in this genre, ranged characters have less accuracy the more enemies are in their vicinity. So if you get two melee combatants near a ranged enemy his chance to hit will be low af, as well, melee attackers have bonus hit chance against ranged combatants. Makes sense, hard to concentrate and aim while surrounded by enemies, and hard to block with just a gun.

Str is also the primary health attribute, meaning melee characters are almost always going to be harder to kill than their ranged counterparts, ammo is scarce enough to warrant skipping a turn and letting your melee ranger kill an enemy to conserve ammo.

Game has good c&c so far, first choice in game is whether to save the ag center, which provides the area's food , or highpool, which provides the water, whichever zone you ignore will fall, don't know how long lasting the consequences to this choice is, but so far it locks off a companion and likely some items and of course the major quest path. Second is choosing a tribe to side with in a feud, haven't got to explore that one fully yet, due to the patching corrupting saves from the first build.

Speaking of companions, you can have 3 I believe, I only have 2 so far, they're well written enough, like Fallout they comment on locations and can give hints. They have skills the same as your base rangers and can level, but only at your pace, meaning that if you have a lvl 16 ranger they will stay the same until you're also that level.

They can turn on you in certain situations, and seem to be able to "lose control" while in combat, they yell out a bark about how they'll show you how it's done and take their own turn. I don't know what affects it but it's likely charisma. Some of them won't trade items with you, again I assume there's a check, there hasn't been a lot of transparency on these mechanics yet so idk.

Good so far, lacks polish, but it is a beta, lots of skill and features are unavailable, feels good to be involved in the process of fixing the game though, at least one of my suggestions has been incorporated into the game, along with a lot of other suggestions from members of W2 forum. Not sure if I prefer this type of development, but yeah , W2 is a "camel", nothing that I wouldn't consider an improvement has come from that yet, so I see it as mostly good.

I wrote all this knowing that at the very most 1 person might be moderately interested. So two posts alone are enough to validate it, now I don't have to throw a VC fit about how nobody is interested in "real" games.

Party for the current build: Posted Image The really cutesy one was drawn by my gf.

I made a Japanese even though there is no Japanese background choice because fuck rules.(I just chose Chinese because they're pretty much the same thing.)
