⚔️ The People's Hero ⚔️
Lenox Hill Hospital

Jake breathes heavily as the doctor checks his heart pulse with a stethoscope. He pauses for a couple seconds, then begins writing something on his clipboard.

Doc: No irregularities. Blood circulation is normal and your heart rate is steady.

The doctor continues by observing Jake’s ears with an otoscope.

Doc: The ear drum is clearly visible. No obvious infections are present.

Following that, he uses a magnification tool to examine Jake’s eyes closely. After a few seconds, he begins putting down some simple notes.

Doc: There are zero issues that are affecting your vision in a major way. The only possible concern I see are… enlarged blood vessels around the cornea. Possibly could be stress or lack of sleep?

Jake: Probably both.

He finishes by bending Jake’s leg and arm joints gently. After a few tests and recordings, he puts a big checkmark on the paper with his pen.

Doc: Your physical examination is complete. No serious or critical symptoms from today’s visit, Mr. Turpin. Your wrestling match luckily didn’t mess you up too bad.

Jake: Sweet! I get to live another day!

Both Jake and the doctor release a nervous laugh, before the doctor finishes the report with a signature. He hands it to Jake folded in half, and sends him on his way to the exit.

Doc: Next time you visit for your check-up, I better see you exactly like today. Basically what I’m saying is… Take it easy in that ring, son.

Jake: That’s all I’m going to be here for, Doc. Nothing else. Believe me, I can’t afford to have a serious injury. A healthy Jake is a happy Jake.

They shake hands as Jake takes his leave to the parking lot. Moments later, Jake is driving in his green 2014 Chevrolet Silverado down Highway 278 towards Brooklyn, New York. He feels good, although he lost in his triple threat match on Collision 80. From such a weighty match, he doesn’t mind the blemish on his career. He’s determined mostly, on the importance of his match this week. The thoughts are running through his head of winning, as he steers the wheel in his lane. He turns on his clicker to change lanes, since he is about to approach Exit 33. He can’t help but memorize the energy the IBW Universe gave to him from his match at Supremacy to the match he had last week. It was almost an indestructable force that drove him past his wrestling ability and created his desire to win. It is the driving force that he hopes brings him the win this Friday. It’s all that Jake wants. He wants the chance to prove he can back the IBW Universe at a moment’s notice, and get the job done thoroughly. If he accomplishes this, he will have accomplished the biggest goal he has set since becoming a professional wrestler. Until then, he dreams about it happening. But in due time, he hopes to start his winning streak again and seize the best opportunities he can take.

Jake’s Apartment, Room 206
Brooklyn, New York
6:08 PM EST

Jake stands in front of his apartment door, fumbling with the keys. After he finds the right one, he jiggles it in the lock and turns the door open. The air inside is as fresh as always, with the warmness of the electric fireplace blowing through. The candles flicker with the smallest flame, generating a cozy atmosphere. He shuts the door behind him, and the sound of footsteps echo through the kitchen area and hallway.

Jake: Royce? I’m home!

Royce: Dad!

Royce runs up to Jake and gives him a massive hug, worthy of possibly winning the “Hug of the Year” award. Jake embraces the hug, but slightly moves him back to exchange a few words.

Jake: Now what did I say about calling me “dad”? I said we will talk about that. I’m not sure I’m ready for it. For now, call me “Jake” or something else that doesn’t have anything to do with being a father.

Royce: Alright, “mister”!

Jake: Not that either, Royce! Sheesh… that makes me feel old, and I’m in the best shape of my life right now. How about… “JT”?

Royce: “JT”?

Jake: Yes! JT! Those are my initials. It’s perfect for now, little man.

Royce: Alright….. JT….. I made something for you again! This time, it’s good. I promise!

Jake: I hope so, bud. Go get it!

Royce gladly turns around and sprints for the other room. Jake looks at him in a deeper sense, like looking back at a reflection of himself 15 years ago. He was once a spry kid, doing things that no ordinary kid would do. He remembers back when he did parkour on the neighbors’ houses. It didn’t always resort to happiness in the end, cause the neighbors called the Animal Control Center as if he was a wild cat on the loose. It didn’t end there, when sometimes he would start bonfires with his loyal friends. They grew incredibly fast and incredibly wide, covering damn near 5 yards of space. The park rangers would find them soon after and send them back home. He was indeed a troubling kid, but he was also a kid with wild dreams and temptations. Things that a young teenager like him should have had. He breaks free from his imagination and soon heads to his bedroom, where he put his bags away and his coat on a hangar. He hears footsteps once again, and Royce appears in his bedroom slightly out of breath.

Jake: Whoa! Calm down there, bud! Let’s see what you got.

Royce presents the paper to Jake. So intricately drawn and nicely proportioned, Jake gasps in surprise! It looked like a masterpiece! What was it however? It appeared to be a crafty set of superheroes in a squad-like formation. A magnificent city is in the background, while the superheroes look to serve justice to the people. These superheroes were…… well, Royce will tell you.

Royce: I love superheroes, JT! Each one is unique, and each one has a unique story. This is where I put my skills to the test.

He points to the one on the furthest left. He’s red, blue and quite scrawny in stature.

Royce: This is Spider-Man! The bite of an irradiated spider granted a high-school student named Peter Parker incredible powers. When a burglar killed his Uncle Ben, Peter vowed to use those abilities to protect his fellow man, driven by his uncle's words: With great power comes great responsibility!

Next, he points to a big and burly “man” (more of a monster) to the furthest right.

Royce: This is the Hulk! Caught in the blast of gamma radiation, brilliant scientist Bruce Banner is cursed to transform in times of stress and anger into the living engine of destruction known as the Incredible Hulk!

He points to the second-to-last superhero on the left of the Hulk, a hairy man with sharp claws.

Royce: This is Wolverine! Born with super-human senses and the power to heal from almost any wound, Wolverine was captured by a secret organization and given an unbreakable skeleton and claws. Treated like an animal, it took years for him to control himself. Now, he's a premiere member of both the X-Men and the Avengers. You know who’s even better than Wolverine?

Jake: Who?

Royce points to the last one, located directly in the center. He didn’t look like any famous superhero, but he looked very familiar to Jake. He looked closer, then he finally figured it out.

Royce: It’s you, JT! You’re the captain of the team! The mysterious man named Zhoom! Born from a poor part of Lake Havasu City, Arizona… Zhoom was raised to learn the true values of what it is to be a man. He has the power to punch really hard with his fists, and he has incredibly high pain tolerance. Most importantly, he can wrestle better than anyone he sets his mind to. He’s better than Captain America if you ask me.

Jake has no choice but to shed a tear. Embarrassed, he rubs the tear away immediately and grabs the paper. He keeps it close to his heart.

Jake: This is beautiful, Royce! You definitely improved! I’m going to take this everywhere I go, okay?

Royce: Okay!

They hug each other tightly, creating what most people see as a father and son bond. The day is good, but it just got a whole lot better for Jake.
