John Morris
In-SPEAR-ational
"The New Era"™ is Upon Us
And what it means for the fans, the locker room, and the stockholders

Background

  • IBW has been losing. To everyone. Their HBO exclusivity for live shows already hurt them in number of total viewers, but they operated due to their profit-per-fan being higher, and the lucrative deal with HBO. However, with less viewers coming in, it's hurting IBW and HBO.
  • Rumors are saying HBO has been sending letters to IBW Execs that have been threatening to not resign when the contract ends, which is in ~6 months.
  • This has caused IBW to panic, as even their top star (who was the breadwinner at the time) James Parker was losing value. When he got injured and they had no BIG money names (apart from lowkey merch seller Nikolai Sinclair), IBW panicked even more.
  • For reasons still trying to be decided, IBW General Manager Harry Croft has either stepped down or been forced to step down. There are a variety of rumors that we will deal with at a later date (or never. It's just drama).
  • IBW Hall of Famer Snickers Ivy found a way to get the job to her boyfriend, John Morris.
  • Already at the announcement of Morris being the GM has gotten some fans interested, though it should be noted the projections only state for ~5 increase in viewers. To get to where they once were, IBW is going to need aboouuuuttttttt 40% says our stat geeks.
  • John Morris, as he always do, declares that there will be 'big changes' to things. And in one interview he has called this "the New Era". That's what we will be talking about today. What this "New Era" is.

What Morris Has Told Us Thus Far

  • In an interview, John has said many things as to what will be coming with the "New Era".
  • Morris is implementing a new Pay system, since for some reason IBW Wrestlers aren't unionized? Either way, in about two months whenever all their current year in terms of pay are done, Morris is trying for a system that has a much lower salary, but higher commission rate for merchandise as well as an "approval bonus". Whatever that means. A lot of people are for, a lot of people are against. It's still in the works, and nothing is confirmed.
  • In terms of working conditions, Morris has said he wants to go "back to the good ole days, but mixed with a modern style". A snarky interviewer asked if that meant he was going to only push people he liked while also giving them the belt for an unreasonably long time. John explained what he meant, by saying it was more about who the wrestlers are in terms of value to the company now. He explained by saying this (paraphrasing):

"If you look at the past, some of the greatest wrestlers didn't get to go anywhere because they didn't mean anything. Look at T-Rex, or whatever his name was. He was a BIG guy, who was the perfect monster. And management liked him too. Hell, Fender let this guy throw him off a cage. But you know what he wasn't? A value to the company. The guy couldn't speak, and he wasn't all that willing to put a manager in his corner because "I work best alone." And another, much more popular example is Dominic Jackson. I love Dominic Jackson, and everyone in IBW loves Dominic Jackson. You know why Dominic never won the world belt? Because he's got a bunch of other shit going on and the company can't rely on him to carry them like they wanted him to. And I don't blame Dom for this, but he's such a well-rounded guy that he can't give his all to IBW at any given time. He is pretty much our Chris Jericho.

Then you go to guys like Krmi, who was the best worker in the ring AND consistently the best heel in the company. He was the most valued guy in Pro Wrestling for a long time, and that's why he was such a huge name back in the day, and today. He was an asset to the company, and a pretty large one. "

  • Morris said there were a few new marketing techniques they had, but the marketing was pretty much good in the past, it was the shows themselves that weren't keeping audiences. He referenced Suicide Squad.
  • In terms of show quality, Morris said that was where big changes were coming. IBW would be much more feud-oriented. It would no longer be this competitive locker-room politics show with backstabbing and legit injuries in shows and deals with the Creative Team and blackmail and whatever else happened. Now, it would be about entertainment, and nearly entirely story-driven. That's also how he fought critics who were wrestlers for the company, or certain former wrestlers who try hiding their opinions. "You know, some people are talking about how it's not the 'way it's been done', which is right. And a lot of people are saying 'it takes the competitive nature out of it', which is partially right. And some people are saying it's a stupid, stupid idea. Which it may be. And a LOT of people are complaining because now they won't get to shine every week in the Main Event just for showing up and knowing a bit more about how to play the game backstage. Well, here's my response to them: Do your job. You're a wrestler, not a Football Player or even an MMA Fighter. This is naturally a very co-operative event. Every match you put on, you're doing it with the guy you're fighting, not against. Sorry for ruining your power illusion, but wrasslin' isn't competitive."
  • Morris continued the above by going on about how the story-driven ways would help out all involved in IBW. "Yeah, I mean it just makes sense. On-screen these guys are getting character development while also putting on more entertaining shows. More entertaining shows means more viewers, meaning HBO is happy AND we sell more merch. Both of those means we get to keep our jobs and make more money. And on-screen character development means that, compared to just hoping new guys would lead the company... Nick Foster and Mat Emeralds... we can now not only see the future stars, but develop them on our own. That means that, say Nikolai Sinclair tears his ACL? Boom. We have one of the guys we were training and developing ready to jump right in his spot. We are not only ready, but we can constantly improve. That's what is important."
  • Did we say a big focus on Merch? Because aside from wrestlers now getting paid more or less thanks to it, it will also keep IBW stockholders happy. Morris has said that now, a piece of their merch sales will be redistributed as dividends, which is pretty nice.
  • John wants to do a world tour, and bring back two of IBW/OBW's great events (Lethal Lotto and Ruler of the Ropes, more specifically) while also trying out new ideas (a Dominic Jackson idea that has been in the book for years that Morris has wanted to happen for quite some time).
  • Morris has said that a lot of big revamps that were needed are coming. A new answer to the dead tag division. A way to train the newcomers. A way to provide more content than the weekly shows. A LOT is coming, and really the only way to know it all is to hope Morris doesn't get angry at the talent and leave.(which he said he won't now due to some changes backstage and a new team of staff)

What This Means For Fans

  • Apparently, the shows will be better quality. Now, stories will be used to draw in viewers. While some are surely going to be hokey like the current Miz/Ambrose feud in WWE, Morris an extensive history in storytelling through various means. That means that some will surely be deeper, and we should expect some amazing shows from it.
  • IBW already puts out DVDs and Blu-Rays and online downloads for their PPVs, but with this new 'Merch' focus we might be seeing a 'season' being sold, so people will be getting the episodes of Collision for the first time outside of HBO in a LOOOONNNGGG time. The last time they did was a failed online stream that IBW decided to cut out.
  • Did we mention $$$ stories?

What This Means For The Locker Room

  • Anyone can wrestle, but IBW is looking like it'll only be for those who can tell stories. A lot of the big names now have proven that they can, but it seems like everyone will be put under a test.
  • Morris has expressed a LOT that no longer is the person you're wrestling against supposed to be the guy you talk about spots to five minutes in the locker room before you go out for your match. He wants the talent to 'wow' him, and he says to do that they MUST work together.
  • Expect a lot of weird events and whatnot on shows. Morris has a thing for nontraditional tournaments.
  • Did we say pack your bags yet because Morris might be setting up a tour?
  • Also, sell merch. Merch = $$$

What This Means For Stockholders

  • More dividends.
  • If this goes up, everything will be amazing. If the New Era fails, you might want to sell your shares ASAP.
"It's Complicated."

"I wouldn't say that."

"I absolutely would."

I still can't believe that IBW management (read Stark) is going to commit to such drastic changes. Giving Morris all creative control AND greenlighting his Finance ideas? If this works out, he might just be forgiven for the shit he pulled with Schafer.
