The region already has a high fantasy vibe to it. However, even with that, there are various subcultures that we could bring into the world. My primary question is on whether we take a RWBY-esqe route and maintain airship fleets, communication gadgets, and high-tech weaponry? Or should we maintain a more Lord of the Rings route, and keep things in a more, for lack of a better term, medieval route where everyone travels by foot or horseback?

I prefer going with a blend of the two, maintaining communication gadgets and airships, but leaving high tech weaponry out. IIRC, this will place us more in the realm of a Final Fantasy centric design, though I'm not positive as I'm not familiar with the series.

We can power the technology we use by using magical items and such. As far as weapons go, I was thinking something along the lines of crystal cannons, potion bombs, etc. Some subcultures can use magical gems as a resource to power ships and trade it like a commodity or a form of currency. I'm just throwing ideas out there.

Absolutely. I know for a fact that RWBY uses an energy source known as Dust for power and and weaponry.

I think that I'd rather go for the LoTR route.

I prefer a LOTR route as well. We can let the region and roleplay progress into technical developments and further into other eras, influenced by people, events, etc.

An avid fan of A Song of Ice and fire here, communication can be used as letters written and carried out by doves or ravens. Powerful mages could also transport themselves, "hologram" themselves, etc.

I do think weaponry should stay medieval. It just really rips me out of High Fantasy doing so. It feels wrong that people must use torches, candles, and lanterns for light yet they have a steam-powered warship sailing in the sea (I'm looking at you, The Last Airbender!).
