Scott,
This is news. They purchased the property? Who are the people? The last I was aware this was still in hands of NYS and towns/villages. In the town of Millers Mills locals have taken illegally taken possesion not sure will happen goes to certain people over there and walk thru their front yards.

2 Entrepreneurs Consider Options For 18.5 Mile Route

By JIM KEVLIN

RICHFIELD SPRINGS

Two entrepreneurs have acquired the old 18.5-mile Richfield Springs railroad branch from Cooperstown’s Delaware Otsego Corp.
The Town of Richfield men, Ben Gotfried, who was previously involved in the railroad industry, and Ron Sadlon, a dairy farmer and Gotfried’s neighbor, closed on the property April 20.
The men are exploring recreational uses for the 66-foot wide strip – walking and snowmobiling – but also the possibility of enticing a narrow-guage railroad company to set up an excursion line.
The newly acquired rail bed – the tracks were torn up in 1995 – begins to the west of Route 28 just south of the Village of Richfield Springs, skirts the southwestern end of the village and proceeds to South Columbia, East Winfield, West Winfield and, finally, Bridgewater, where it ends at Mapledale Road.
North of Mapledale Road, the Central New York, the DO subsidiary, continues to operate freight trains today and, conceivably could be hooked into by the new enterprise.
“We’re just starting our outreach now,” Gotfried said the other day as he walked along the rail bed toward Second Arch, a stone span over Mink Creek.
The partners are calling their enterprise Utica, Chenango & Susquehanna Valley LLC.
They are organizing a tour of the property June 15, and have invited the state Department of Transportation, Herkimer and Oneida county economic development officials, and Parts & Trails New York.
Gotfried envisions the rail bed as a possible means to promote tourism in northern Otsego County. He has a slide of the former terminus at Lake Street in Richfield Springs and suggests that, revived, it could serve as a powerful magnet for visitors.

Scott,

I sent you and Bruce the following e-mail 06-06-09;

Bruce & Scott,

I know Seldon Real estate and some other investors bought the rail road bed but didn't know who to contact.
Are they going to be responsible for repairs now?
Anyhow - There is a large opening in the bridge that somebody could really get hurt in. Its probably 18 inches wide and 2 1/2 feet across. I found a long wooden box in the grass I put over the hole but it probably won't stay there long.
Well - Just thought somebody should know.
This is the second bridge in from Rt 51 heading towards Bridgewater.

Scott,
I just inspect the bridges (3) for others saftey once a summer when I'm out on my mouantian bike, or we could just wait until the groomer falls through - just a comment ;)
My point was to ask someone in charge of our trail system who's responsible for these repairs now or if its still going to be one of our trails for that matter. The property now belongs to those investors which makes it their responsibility but did'nt know if the club had made a deal with them to maintain bridges in return for a reduced rate for use. These people laid out around $ 100,000.00 and I'm sure they will be looking for a return on their investment in one way or another.

p.s. - I clear branches and overhangs when I'm out but have no resources/equipment to make repairs of this magnitude, that being said - If help is needed by the club to remedy this - just call, I'll help!

I sent the following email to the buyers of the rr. Their response follows
Hi,
My name is Ted Kozenewski and I'm a member of the Ilion Snowdrifters snowmobile club(www.ilionsnowdrifters.com). I was just wondering if your plans for the corridor will still include the use of snowmobiles. The Ilion Snowdrifters have been maintaining(brushing & grooming) a section of the corridor from Chepatchet to just the other side of West Winfield for many years and it is currently on the NYS Snowmobile Trail map as Trail C7B. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Thank you,
Ted Kozenewski

Their response

Hi Ted,

We do hope to continue with the various snowmobile clubs that use our corridor. My partner Ron Sadlon will be doing most of the work with the snowmobile clubs. Give him a call on his cell at ***-****. He will be able to fill you in on our plans regarding snowmobile use of the property.

Ben

I also called Ron Sadlon on his cell phone and left a message but so far he hasn't returned my call. If anyone else would like to contact him shoot me an email(snowgrumer@gmail.com) and I'll give you his cell number.(I didn't think it would be a good thing to publish Ron's cell # on the forum)

Just so everyone knows when I was coming by where 4 Guys used to be I saw one of the neww owners of the railroadbed putting up posted signs. Also saw them on route 51 where it crosses. I was wondering if we had any plans for alternate trails or possibly more discussion with owners. Any thing I can do to help let me know. Posted also in general discussion.

I was out riding the bike yesterday. We rode south on RTE 28 to Cooperstown. New posted signs have also appeared in the Richfield Springs area on the coridoor.
They want to be paid to ride on the railbed. Never going to fly with the clubs. As far as alternate. Except for getting into West Windfield on the south side using the right of way. You can still acess Bridgewater from fields and Winfield from trail coming in behind the firehouse.
