Mischa sat on the grass reading her book, waiting for the bus to arrive, which would take some time. She didn't even know why they had her taking the bus to begin with. Mischa had her own mode of transportation that would most certainly get her to school on time and home when she was ready to leave. This waiting for the bus bull was boring, to say the least. Maybe it was just because the adults wanted to make sure that the kids really made it to school on time, since It was a new year and what not, and it would certainly makes sense. However, Mischa was really going to have to talk to someone about this so she could convince them to let her ride to school on her own.

The crowded bus was something that was not new to her, but riding a bus with people who were different the way she was different was an iffy concept. Mischa didn't know if someone was going to think she was not different enough because the contacts were in, or if someone was going to prod her about her mutation... It wasn't that Mischa was ashamed of who she was, she just wasn't used to talking about it yet. Once step at a time, ya know? For the moment though, she would enjoy the book in her grasps, seeing at the other kids were caught up in their own conversations.

Kat was rather annoyed that she had to wait to be picked up rather than walking home. Her grandmother had told her to wait to be picked up instead of walking home. Hope had a doctor's appointment, and they'd be going past the school on their way to it, so Kat had been told to wait.

Despite being here a few days, she hadn't really gotten to know many people. Most of the girls thought there was something wrong with her because not only was she not obsessed with that horrible teen 'vampire' story everyone else seemed to be, but she actively despised it. Most of the boys thought there was something wrong with her because most of the girls thought so. As a result, Kat was mostly on her own. She didn't particularly mind...it just meant she got more time to herself.

Looking around, Kat spotted another girl sitting by herself. There weren't any others close enough to be a problem.

"Hey" she said, walking over. "Uhm...you mind if I sit here?" she asked, indicating a shady spot a couple of feet away. "I'm waiting on a ride, and I'd rather not hang around the herd of sheep while I do it." Kat indicated the groups of students that were engaged in either horseplay, watching the horseplay, or some other such thing that you could walk into any high school in the country and see going on.

Mischa was deep into her book when a voice broke her from it. She didn't really mind though, considering it was book she had read many many times. So much, in fact, that the book was worn down a bit. She didn't know what it was about Emma that she liked so much, but whenever she was feeling out of place, or down, or even bored, it was the first book she went for. It was a charming story, and though it had its complications, everything turned all right in the end. Perhaps she hoped that her life would be similar. Everything kept turning out wrong in her life, but maybe one day things would work out how they were supposed to and she wouldn't feel so crappy about their life.

Shaking her head, she gestured as if to say she could sit there. "Go ahead. There's more than enough room." Mischa smiled politely and set her book down. Not many people actually took time out of their day to talk to Mischa, so she wasn't going to be rude to someone who was probably looking to pass the time before someone came to pick her up. "I know exactly how you feel. I have to wait for a stupid, late bus, when I have a bike at home that I could have taken here myself. Guess when you live with a bunch of people, you have to live by the rules."

Mischa was referring to living at Xavier's, which was secretly a home for mutants. Of course, if anyone asked it was a school for "gifted" students, to give them the opportunity to hone their talents and succeed in life. If she was asked about it, that's what she was supposed to say, she guessed. "I'm not much of a sheep girl myself.... So who are you waiting on?"

"Thanks" Kat said, giving the other girl a friendly smile and seating herself. She'd intended to take out her own book and read while she waited, but the other girl had put hers down, so Kat left her book in her bag. To do otherwise would have been extremely rude.

"My grandmother. My sister has a doctor's appointment, and they'll be passing by here on their way to it. So I was told to wait instead of walking home like I usually do" she replied, making a face that displayed her dislike of the situation. Kat shrugged to say 'what can you do?' and curled her legs under her. "What about you?"

Mischa nodded as if she understood, though she really didn't. She didn't know anything about it really, because she was an only child and her parents never really picked her up from anywhere. They didn't really care if she got home or not, well if she didn't get home she sure got an ear full about it. It took her a long time of working to get that bike, considering her father took a big chunk of it for himself. "Rent" he called it, but he was just trying to make her life more miserable because he could. That was his way though, he didn't care about her and she didn't know why. Mischa supposed she would never know, but that was okay... at least she was far away from him now.

"I live up at Xavier's.... I'm there on an art scholarship." It was a bit of a lie, she wasn't really on a scholarship, but she didn't really have to pay to be there. And Mischa really was good at art though, it was one of the few things she was allowed to do outside of her parents' demands. Of course the only reason why her father let her dance was because it helped her form in fighting, and it gave him more of an excuse to beat the hell out of her. At least she knew how to defend herself against other evils in the world, right?

Pulling a pad from her bag, she flipped it open to a fall scene, colored with oil pastels. Mischa preferred to sketch most of the time, but that day had felt more like an oil pastel day. "This one took a good three hours to do. I kept adding leaves to make it look more realistic." Thank goodness she had a talent that she could use to pass of the excuse they were supposed to give.

Kat's brow furrowed a little at the mention of Xavier's. She hadn't been out enough to have heard much of anything about it. The most information she'd gotten was that it was some sort of private school or boarding house, and that the majority of the kids at Salem thought the kids from Xavier's were snooty and thought they were better than the Salem kids. No one seemed to know anything else. Kat didn't buy into the rumors, and as usual with rumors, the ones about the snootiness of the Xavier kids were proving to be false. In fact, this girl was a lot more pleasant to be around than most of the others she'd interacted with so far.

She scooted a little closer to see the pad better. "Wow..." she said, genuinely impressed. "The best I can do is stick figures" she added with a grin. "If I try to do something like that, it'll come out looking like a kid's finger-painting." Kat looked over the drawing one more time before looking back to the girl. "How long have you been at Xavier's?"

Mischa smiled kindly before flipping it closed and putting it back in her bag. "I'm sure you're great at something that I'm completely shotty at." Everyone had their talents, and Mischa knew for a fact that Kat had to have one of her own. It was inevitable though when it came to people. Most people tried to figure out a way to make life go faster by picking a hobby. Shoot, she knew some people at the institute who could make lanyards that were five feet long in about half an hour. That was something that she could never understand, but she sure could watch them do it with interest.

"Not too long." Long enough that the bruises and the black eye were already gone by the time school started. That was something she was thankful for. It was hard enough to avoid glances at her old school, but to avoid glances at an entirely new school would be damn near impossible. "Couple months maybe. Its a nice place."

"Maybe" Kat responded with a smile. "If I think of something, I'll let you know" she added. There was actually one thing that came to mind...but...she couldn't talk about that. Besides...it had only happened the once.

"That's good" she replied. "I doubt I'll ever see the inside of such a place, though. You usually have to have been playing an instrument or drawing like that since you were little to get into places like that." Kat wondered why this girl was here instead of there since she'd been lucky enough to get into such a place. It wasn't really her business though, so she didn't ask.

"I'm Kat, by the way" she said, suddenly realizing she hadn't yet introduced herself.

Mischa didn't know if she would either, to be honest with herself. It was kind of a safe haven for those who were mutants and she didn't think that bringing a normal person into Xavier's was a good idea. They weren't really supposed to talk about it in public. Society just wasn't ready for a set of people who were genetically different in a way that made them more powerful than others. People would automatically consider them a threat and probably go crazy. Any sign of a threat and people tended to blow it out of proportion. After 9/11, anyone that looked middle eastern was prosecuted... just imagine what would happen if they made their differences known to the world. "Well you never know. They are real tight on security though."

She tried to make it seem as if Xavier's was like any other specialty school. "Mischa. Jenkins." Mischa smiled and offered her hand to shake the other girl's. She was always someone who shook hands firmly; she didn't see the point in a weak handshake. Besides, a weak handshake made people think that you really weren't happy to meet/see them, and that was not the case at all. Mischa didn't want to give the wrong impression.

"Nice to meet you" Kat said, shaking hands politely. Her grip was strong, but not tight enough to cause any pain.

She glanced around searching for something else to talk about. Her eyes fell on Mischa's book. "I haven't read that one" she asked, indicating the book on the ground. "I generally go for science fiction or fantasy novels. What's it about?"

Mischa held the book up and smiled. "Emma is a Jane Austin. Its about a socialite that likes to play cupid... it kind of back fires on her a bit, but everything ends up working itself out. I'm not usually big on this genre, but its always been one of my favorites." It helped her forget about a lot of things back when she lived with her parents. She was able to forget the bruises, the pain, the scratches... It was really not something she wanted to remember either. "The Library has a copy if you'd ever like to read it, or you could borrow mine. I've read it enough...as you can probably tell."

She flopped the book around to show how worn it was, and she let out a small laugh. Mischa didn't realize that she had read it so much that it actually caused the wearing of it. When Mischa bought it originally it had been a new copy. Of course now it looked like she had had it for much longer than she actually did. That was all right though, it had done her a lot of good over the years.

"I'll have to check it out sometime" she said, actually interested.

Kat grinned when she saw the condition of the book. Reaching into her bag, she pulled out a copy of Firestarter by Stephen King. She held it up for Mischa to see. Kat's book was in similar condition. She'd picked it up about three or four years ago, but it looked about a decade old. "This is one of my favorites" she said. "It's about this girl who can light fires with her mind. I got it when I was twelve or thirteen."

She thought about what happened to the girl in the book, and shivered a little. Experimented on, forced to perform...blackmailed with the threat of never seeing her father again...it wasn't pleasant. Kat took it as a warning.

"I don't know if you like this sort of thing, but you can borrow it if you want" she said. "I practically have it memorized" she added with another grin.

Mischa let out a small laugh and held out her book towards Kat. "I'll trade you?" She knew that she didn't really know Kat that well, but she was willing to let the girl borrow her book. Besides, it could be an opening that would allow Mischa to have a real friend for once. She had never had one before, partly because nobody liked her back home, and her father never let her have the time for friends. He thought it was a waste for people to have friends when Mischa could be doing something useful with herself. Of course, doing something useful didn't exactly match up between Mischa and her father.

"If you don't like Emma, that's fine." Mischa wasn't really picky when it came to reading, usually... though even she couldn't handle too much of one thing. Her book collection actually had a wide variety of genres and she was sure she wouldn't mind reading a Stephen King novel. After all, she had really enjoyed reading Rose Red. Sure, it brought chills to her skin, but that was part of the reasons she loved it so much. "Some people like it, others don't. I think all books are like that really."

"Its the same thing for me with Emma. If there was a play to audition for, I might just audition for Emma... unless they want a blonde. Eh." Her thoughts wandered off for a moment before coming back to the topic at hand. "Probably not. I don't like being the center of attention." The thought of being in the spotlight with everyone watching her. It was enough to make her shiver.

"Sure" Kat replied cheerfully. Loaning out books wasn't something she normally did, but she got the impression that Mischa would be just as careful with her book as she'd be with Mischa's.

She tried to imagine herself on stage, and couldn't do it. Kat hated giving reports in front of the class...she'd probably be immobile if she tried to perform on stage anywhere. "I don't much like it either" she said. "I'd be too chicken to audition for anything. Besides...I'm a bit old for the lead if they ever made Firestarter into a play, or if they did a remake of the movie." If I could figure out how to repeat that little trick I pulled a few days ago though...they'd save a ton of money on special effects she thought with some amusement...knowing that even then she didn't dare tell anyone.

"When you've finished that one, I have a few others you can look through and borrow if you want" she offered. Kat thought of the "few" books she had. Her shelves in her room were crammed full, with more in a small chest beside her bed. Those particular books had belonged to her parents, and some were ones that her parents had given her as gifts...not ones she was willing to loan out. Ok...so "a few" was an understatement...but no need to share that at the moment.

When it came to things like plays, Mischa would freeze up right away, but she wouldn't mention that dancing was a completely different story. Sure, it hadn't really been something she had wanted to do at first, but eventually she came to love it with a passion she could hardly describe. There was just something about moving her body to the music that set her soul on fire and gave her a push that she didn't know she needed. Perhaps it was her heightened sense of hearing that helped her understand and get lost in music more easily, or maybe it was because music kept her focus on it than her own thoughts, either way she loved it.

Mischa smiled at the invitation to other books. "That'd be great. I'm always looking for something new to read." Mischa's eyes were sharp and could see the lettering more easily than most people, so it allowed her to read faster than other people. Her eyes could move faster along the page with its focus than most people she knew, of course that didn't happen when she had those god forsaken contacts in her eyes. Her eyes felt slow with those things. Sometimes they gave her a headache and she just wanted to ditch them and say her real eyes were the contacts, but she was sure that it wouldn't work. Oh well, she would just have to deal with it. "I've lost track of how many books I have at this point."
