Dani shifted her weight nervously back and forth outside the Professor's door. She wanted to talk to him, in the past few months he'd kind of been a replacement for the family she'd lost. He'd taught her so much about controlling her powers, but now she needed advice.

For three years she'd lived in isolation with her grandfather. Black Eagle had kept her away from the world, to protect her from it's cruelty and the world from her abilities. Dani had never intended any harm, but her quick temper and lack of control had led to all sorts of troubles for her.

Now she was here, and had more control over her powers. But her unique fashion sense (or lack thereof) had earned her quite a bit of teasing from her schoolmates. The non-mutant ones, anyways. She wanted to stand up to the bullies, but Dani was terrified that she'd lose control of her powers and out herself. It wasn't her nature to take abuse from anyone, but she felt like she had no choice.

It was getting worse though, and Dani just couldn't take it any more. She was seeking the advice of the one person she felt could help her solve this problem. No one knew people better than the Professor, a telepath of his caliber couldn't help but know people. Maybe he could tell her what she should do.

Professor Xavier

Xavier sighed his name with a minimal amount of flourishes. He knew that Dani was outside waiting for him to allow her entrance. He hadn't been entirely surprised when she had asked to meet with him. He had a feeling he knew what she wanted to meet with him for. Call it intuition, call it instinct, call it what you would.

The light glinted off of Xavier's bald head, shadowed only by his hand which he rubbed on his forehead. He wasn't frustrated or worried. Just slightly fatigued. There was a lot to do with all sorts of students in the school, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Each with their own mutations that needed control. Each having to learn something about themselves and about others. Dani was no exception. Though, as far as control went, maybe she had farther to go than others. That was something that the professor found himself pondering quite a bit. How does one teach control to those who don't know how to control even their basic bodily instincts? Control is relative to maturity, and these children here on his campus were not necessarily mature. Even those who served in his x-men were not entirely mature...each still had their own control issues.

But enough pondering. Xavier had a student waiting for him outside.
"Come in, Dani." He called through the slightly open door.

Dani stepped into the office, shutting the door behind her as she did so. With a smile for the Professor, she took her customary seat across from him and rested her elbows on her knees. "Hi. Thanks for seeing me. I have kind of a problem and I'm not sure what do about it."

Looking down for a moment, Dani collected her thoughts in order to state her problem in an organized and semi-intelligent manner. "See, it's the kids at school. At my old school, before Black Eagle pulled me out, I knew all the kids my whole life. We all dressed pretty much the same, did the same sorts of things, heck we were almost all Cheyenne even. But at Salem, it's different. I stick out like a sore thumb."

She sighed and looked down at her attire, then back up at the Professor. "The other kids are making my life miserable, and it's worse cause I feel like I can't even defend myself. I don't want to lose my temper and lose control of my powers in public. I don't want my life here to be like it was in Colorado. But, I don't want to stop being me either. I just don't know what to do."

Sighing again, Dani looked at the Professor, hoping he would have some good advice for her.

Professor Xavier

Xavier gave the girl a nod of the head and something of a smile as she sat. He was used to these visits from Dani. "It was no trouble." He said in response to her thanks. And truly, at least today, it wasn't. Later on, it might be.

He frowned as he listened to what she said about other kids. This, he should have expected. Kids make fun of kids. Kids are kids worst enemy. Give them someone who is different, and they attack. It, Xavier supposed, was a form of self protection. Go for someone who appeared weaker, and make the self stronger, less of a target of those who were strongest. He didn't have anything to say about her fashion, he rarely had anything to say about anyone's fashion. He would acknowledge that Dani's was a little...different...but she is a teenager...that's to be expected.

He steepled his fingers in front of this face, and bounced them off his chin a couple times, before laying his hands flat on the desk. "Dani. Does what these bully's say change anything about you? About who you are?" He paused. "Are you letting it change who you are?"

Dani shook her head vehemently, "no, of course not. It's just, they come up from behind me and push me into lockers or trip me in the halls. I try to watch out for them, but I don't have eyes in the back of my head, I can't always see them coming."

She sighed and propped her chin on her hands, her expression morose and frustrated. "I'm not going to stop being me, but I can't even defend myself against these kids. I mean, I could leave them screaming on the floor, so scared they're literally wetting their pants. But I can't do that, because it's not fair, because they have no defense, because they're just human."

It became more of a temptation to unleash her power on the bullies every day, the only thing holding her back was the fear of disappointing the Professor. This place was all she had now, if she were sent away, Dani would have no where to go. tears threatened as she pleaded with the Professor. "Tell me what to do, how to make them stop! Please! I don't want them to be friends with me, I just want them to leave me alone."

Xavier frowned as he listened to Dani. He didn't like that kids were picking on her, of course not, but he couldn't honestly do anything about it either. He wasn't going to fight her battles for her, that was part of growing up--a necessary part of growing up--and Dani had to learn on her own. He could provide guidance of course, but no more.

"Dani, the first thing you need to do is stop giving them so much power over you. Every time you so much as get mad and think about using your powers, you let them win. And it is a cheap victory." He paused and folded his hands together, thinking how to word everything appropriately. "Don't change who you are, not for them. I promise you that you will regret it. And don't lose your temper, than you shall truly provide them with fuel for their fire. They will never leave you alone then."

He shook his head thoughtfully. "This is part of growing up, Dani. I'm sorry to say it, but this is life. And we all have gone through it, and will continue to go through it."

"But..." She felt so alone, so bereft. It seemed like the entire world was against her, and she wasn't even allowed to defend herself. "It's not fair!"

Dani jumped to her feet, frustration seething within her. "They can do whatever they want to me! Push me into lockers, call me names, make racist jokes! No one cares! No one does anything! I hate it here!"

She knew she was being childish, but she couldn't seem to help herself. "Black Eagle wouldn't let them treat me like this! He'd do something! It's your fault he's gone! If you'd come sooner, he'd still be here. I wouldn't have to live at this stupid place, I could be at home!"

She pointed an accusing finger at her guardian, then kicked the chair in frustration. It wobbled, but remained upright. Still angry, she kicked the wall hard enough to make the books wobble in the shelves, then slammed her fists into it.

Then, as abruptly as it had erupted, her rage dissolved and she leaned her head against the abused wall and sighed heavily. She knew why she was here, it was the last thing Black Eagle had asked of her. Dani knew he would want her to be stronger than this, to not give in to the rage and hurt and loss that boiled under her skin. But she missed him so damn much!

Turning around again, she sighed and slid to the floor, tears falling down her face. Her voice wavered as she whispered an apology, though for what she wasn't certain. "I'm sorry...I just miss him so much..."

Xavier watched and listened with stoic silence while Dani wore herself out. He feared for her fists for a moment as she hammered at the wall, but, experience is sometimes the best teacher, and pain is sometimes necessary is grief.

"While, I understand your grief, Dani, it is unnecessary for you to suffer this way." Xavier paused. "Perhaps, if you speak to a counselor...here, at the school instead of at Salem, it would help." He didn't mean with the bullying, but with her pent up grief and rage. And sometimes talking through bullying with someone who was impartial could help, even if that wasn't the man's aim.

"As for the bullies, if you say they won't stop, then make yourself less of a target..."He held up a hand, forestalling any comments. "By that I mean, stay in the view of an adult, or, make friends." His long fingered hands settled once again on the desk. "It is not easy, Dani, and it never will be. But this is how we learn to survive...to face adversity and come out triumphant--perhaps worse for wear, but triumphant nonetheless. You just need to find the strength within yourself."

Dani nodded mutely, accepting Xavier's intentions even if his suggestions bordered on impossible in her mind. She'd been trying for months to make friends, but she was too different. Even at a school for mutant kids she was a bit of an oddball. But she supposed she could buckle down, try a little harder to connect with her fellow students. The Professor wouldn't let her be run out of town again...she hoped.

Taking a deep breath, Dani let it out with a heavy sigh and moved the chair back to it's original position, then sat back down in it. "It's just...it's really hard here for me. Everything is so different from what I've always known, I'm not quite sure where I fit in."

She looked down at her hands, the knuckles were bruised and split from hitting the wall, but there was no real pain. Not yet anyway, though they would probably hurt like heck later. She pressed them into her pants, not wanting to get blood on the Professor's nice furniture. "But, at least I have Brightwind. I know I've said this before, but you really don't know how much it means to me to have him here with me. Thank you for making room for the both of us."
