January 25, mid-afternoon Tag: Wolfsbane Closed It was a freezing cold January day, but the sun shone brightly from the sky as Dani made her way through the woods. She didn't really have a destination in mind, she was just enjoying the day. The light gleamed through icicles and glistened on the snow, reflecting and refracting until the entire word seemed like a pirates treasure trove. Taking a deep breath of cold, clean air, Dani puffed it out of her mouth and watched the fog from her warm breath dissipate. All around her birds chirped and chattered in the trees. Squirrels peered out from the winter hibernation, grabbing a quick mid-winter snack from their hidden stashes before scurrying back to the warmth of their dens. Dani watched as a fox, snug in his winter coat, stalked a rabbit through the brush. It was nice being out here in the woods, listening to nature with her ears and her mind. A hawk soared overhead, looking for a careless squirrel for dinner. She heard his thoughts as clearly as she could hear his hoarse cry. Hunger. Hunting. Hunger. Motion. Prey. Attack. A squirrel squealed as the hawk snatched it from the ground, it's cry of surprise cut short as it's tiny spirit fled. With it's meal clutched in it's talons, the hawk lifted into the air, seeking a safe spot to feast. The circle of life, a squirrel dies so the hawk can live. Dani didn't feel sorrow for the squirrel, everything is born, lives and dies. She moved on through the woods, touching the minds of various animals as she walked. Dani enjoyed hearing their thoughts, they were so simple. The complications that plagued human life didn't affect animals. They thought about basic needs, food, water, warm, cold, safety, danger, mating, babies. Animals never worried about yesterday or tomorrow, they were always in the moment. It was a good feeling. Suddenly, Dani stopped. She touched a mind that was both animal and human. Wolf and woman. Rahne. A small smile crossed her face and Dani jumped up to grab a low hanging branch, then pulled herself into a tree. From that vantage point she could her friend prowling the woods. Deciding to experiment a little, Dani reached out with her mind, "Rahne. Can you hear me?" |

It was too good a day to waste indoors, cold or not. Rahne ate a large lunch with plenty of protein, then headed up to her room for privacy shifting. She didn't want a student to wander in on her somewhere by accident and catch an eye full. The door was specially designed to allow her to open and close it when in wolf form, so she had no troubles with it. Everything looked and sounded different when she was a wolf. Everything was sharper...clearer. Even in human form, her senses were sharper than most others, but it was still a far cry from being in her wolf form. A few students reached down to scratch her ears as she passed then in the halls. She paused a moment to let them before moving on. Once she was outside, she headed across the grounds for the woods at an easy trot. A few students tossing a ball around tried to get her to play 'fetch' with them. She paused and looked at them as if they'd lost their minds. Letting out a canine snort of laughter, she continued on her way. The woods were quiet...absent the noise of humans, at any rate. There were the usual sounds of animals and insects, and the scents of them and plant life. She picked up faint traces of human scent too...evidence of students having been there before. Rahne was playfully chasing a fox and letting it chase her when she felt the touch of another mind on hers. She paused and tilted her head as if listening. Tentatively, she reached out with her own. "Dani?" she replied, not entirely sure if her guess was right. She'd had a few telepaths touch her mind before, but this one sounded...younger, and different...not entirely certain that her message had gotten through. Rahne's eyes scanned the woods, and her nose twitched as she tried to catch scents on the breeze to locate the source of the mind-voice. Her ears twisted this way and that a little as they tried to catch and identify one sound from another. |

A ripple of sound echoed through the trees as Dani laughed in delight. Dropping lower in the branches so Rahne could see, Dani waved at her friend. "I wasn't sure if it would work." Gripping the branch beneath her feet, Dani swung to the ground with an easy grace, her boots making a thump in the snow. Speaking aloud this time, Dani made her way over to Rahne. "Sorry if I scared you. What's up?" Her successful experiment combined with the weather left her in a mood as sunny as the day, and her unusually upbeat mood showed on her face. She was also amused that any one walking by would have thought she was crazy, talking to a wolf as though it were human. It made Dani feel special and privileged to communicate with nature, and that there was another human being close enough to nature to share the experience with her was an absolute delight. Suddenly realizing she might be putting Rahne in a bit of a quandary, Dani amended her question with a quick statement. "Oh, I can hear what you're thinking right now. You don't have to shift back to talk to me if you don't want to." |

Rahne trotted over to where she'd figured out Dani was. She emerged from the undergrowth as Dani's feet hit the ground. Her tail wagged briefly when Dani turned around to look at her. "You didn't scare me" Rahne replied cheerfully. She grinned at the remark about not needing to shift back to communicate. It wouldn't have been...appropriate...for her to shift back, what with her lack of clothing and all. Not to mention cold as all hell. More resistant to the elements than most other people she may be, but even Rahne wasn't entirely immune to the cold. "You know...I think most of the students here have no idea what a wolf looks like" she remarked with some amusement, bringing up the mental images of the students acting like she was a regular dog as she'd passed them. Rahne walked over to Dani and plopped down on her haunches a foot or two away. "So what brings you out here today?" she asked. "I'd have thought you'd be staying inside where it's warm, like most of the others" she added, her mind-voice teasing. |
