An overview of the Alyium system showing its seven planets, their satellites, the mid-system asteroid belt, and notable dwarf objects.

>> Alyium
>> Overview
Alyium is the cradle of the thoryx species, littered with the long history of their industrial growth and the multi-layered defences built by the now-defunct Khol Zone Authority as part of their "Red Line" protocol to protect themselves from the predations of the venkath.

>> Ithyxa
Ithyxa is one of the minor worlds of the Alyium system- although it boasts no true permanent "population", its rocky, sun-blasted surface is littered in industrial facilities and its orbit filled with habitats and platforms. Temporary workers under contract by major corporations and Freelancer groups can spend years living on or above the planet before moving on to less harsh working environments.

A view of a rainy coastal arkocity on Khol, as seen from somewhere in the surrounding D-REZ.

>> Khol
The planet of Khol (pronounced "coal") was the birthplace of the thoryx: their homeworld. At one time a relatively mild planet with fragmented landmasses, lots of rainfall, and seasonal storms, it bears indelible scars of a runaway industrial civilization. Most ecosystems have been permanently ravaged, with rampant invasive species; the oceans have become acidic due to toxic pollutants, with vast areas of coastline reduced to "skeleton coasts" due to mass marine die-off; the air has been flooded with toxic fumes, resulting in acid rain and frequent smog warnings; the equatorial regions are deadly during the summer, with temperatures high enough to cause hyperthermia within hours; the polar ice sheets and permafrost have largely melted, long ago raising the sea level by a significant amount- which in turn has resulted in the planet's seasonal storms having gotten worse, with hurricanes of immense power battering the coastlines.

These symptoms are kept in check- barely- by atmotherapy plants dedicated to albedo engineering, pumping chemicals into the atmosphere that help to reflect sunlight away from the surface and cool the planet at the cost of worsening the acid rain, bleaching the sky, and causing eerie blood-red sunsets.

Sprawling arkocities and extensive slums cover most of the habitable parts of the planet, jumbled titans of skyscrapers and neon. Despite declining birthrates caused by the abysmal environmental conditions, the population density remains quite high thanks to rampant poverty and strict government mandates, forcing countless thoryx into crowded tenement districts and inner-city shanty-towns (and in some places enforcing mandatory child quotas). Beyond these urban environments are swamps, grassy moors, and D-REZ'd wastelands dotted with smaller settlements, some merely abandoned shells that dried up when they depleted their nearby resources.

Although the depletion of Khol's natural resources peaked in centuries past, it remains the economic hub of their civilization. Government offices and communications hubs all route into and through Khol's major arkocities, and while it is no longer a producer of raw materials it maintains a thriving manufacturing industry based out of the few remaining active REZs using the spoils of its off-world operations- operations which are also critical for maintaining its failing ecosystem.

The small moon of Khol, Iaon boasts a number of permanent bubble-habitat settlements and numerous launch facilities. The surface is also littered with dormant mineral extraction sites, once used to mine prodigious amounts of aluminum during the early Space Boom.

>> Vryx
A large gas giant towards the edge of the Alyium system, Vryx was the first large-scale target of the thoryx to colonize another world. While the gas giant itself could not be colonized for obvious reasons, its numerous small moons provided opportune locations for bubble-habitats and bunkers which served as the staging ground for harvesting valuable hydrocarbons and gasses from the gas giant, its rings, and the moons themselves.

Eventually these surface-bound colonies became less important than the growing orbital industry; now Vryx is known for Vryxport, a titanic facility that rivals the manufactories and shipyards of Kohl itself.

>> Depot E-92
One of the major Freelancer hubs within the Alyium system, Depot E-92 has grown into a sprawling spaceport complex since its start during the Space Boom. Valuable for its stable orbit within the system's asteroid belt, the Depot is a major drop-off point for minerals mined throughout the rest of the belt; in addition, its one of the largest "neutral territories" within the system (perhaps next only to Vryxport), nominally responsive to the greater thoryxian government but effectively "by Freelancers, for Freelancers".

>> Red Harbour
A "Trojan asteroid" following behind the larger gas giant in the 6th orbital slot of the system, Red Harbour is a major military installation built after the beginning of the Venkath Skirmishes; serving as the primary refuelling and resupply point for all "Red Line" defence forces and strike groups, the Harbour was under the direct control of the Khol Zone Authority and its military arm.

With the dissolution of the Authority and the end of the Red Line, Red Harbour has remained a strategic military node for the Thoryxian Transitional Administration and enforces a strict no-fly perimeter.
