>> Thoryxian Cuisine >> Overview Given their nonhumanoid nature and alien culture, the dining habits and cuisine of the thoryx are notably distinct from that of humans. Although there is a good deal of regional and cultural difference in the specifics, some larger patterns of considerations and preparation methods can be observed. >> Dining-ware & Environment The quadrupedal bodies and lack of hands (instead possessing a dexterous tongue and fingered "hooves" unsuitable for finer manipulations) of the thoryx have resulted in several unique approaches to how food is served. Food is often served on low tables (sometimes built with wheels) or laid out on benches, for easy access. Thoryx will typically grab items of food from the side unless it requires manipulation with their pincer-like jaws. These tables or benches will carry bowls, plates, and platters. Drinks are typically kept in skins or pouches with a weighted plate or cup on the bottom (allowing them to stand upright)- these can then be grabbed by a thoryx's tongue and poured into their mouths. Another common approach is to fill drained eggshells with liquid and then seal them with wax (or to create synthetic eggshells for the same purpose), which can then be eaten whole. "Messy" foods such as whole fruit are served with a "drip basin", a shallow bowl over which such foods are broken open in order to catch any runoff or dropped scraps. Drip basins are sometimes used to hold food themselves, occasionally with the addition of cool water or some sort of sauce or marinade as well. Particularly messy meals may be accompanied by a washbasin. Some foods (especially meats) are best eaten by a thoryx tearing off strips- these are sometimes hung from hooks or served on a wooden platter to which they have been pinned by stakes or knives. Dining areas are often clear of other obstructions, with meals eaten while standing- occasionally and depending on the circumstance, cushions may be present to allow for a meal to be eaten while laying down. Utensils are rarely present or needed, but some meals (loose salads, noodles, cooked grains) may require a fork or spoon. These "loose" foods are much less common. >> Preparation & Portions Much of thoryxian cuisine is "bite-sized". Eggs (stuffed, cooked, or raw), buns, dumplings, nuggets, strips, and wraps (both dough- or leaf-based) are all common and known as "tongue foods" (as in, they can be eaten solely with the use of one's tongue). Many foods are served in sauce or broth. Soups and stews are less common- they require either shallow bowls that can be manipulated in a thoryx's pincers and drunk from (a practice seen as rude in many cultures) or must be prepared inside of eggs or sealed bread-bowls. Steam-cooking is common. A particular delicacy is live prey- bowls of small fish-, amphibian-, or insect-like creatures are often served and swallowed whole. Whole haunches, roast or glazed, are also sometimes available in many places- these can be gnawed on at leisure, slowly pulling off strips with one's tongue while the thoryx holds it in their pincer-jaws. Formal meals are often served over several courses, with platters and trays brought out from which all participants in the meal may share from. "Fast" or "street" food (as well as many easy-to-prepare meals sold in stores) are often packaged with self-heating elements to warm or steam the portions inside before consumption. >> Common Use Thoryxian Cuisine has a YES Common Use policy.
