![]() Palatine is the capital of the Continuum of Perses and the homeworld of the Highborn of Perses, the co-ruling race of the Continuum. An ecumenopolis by human standards, Palatine is the nexus of the Continuum in regards to bureaucracy and operational capacity. Palantine is located at the intersection of the Hansa Way, Vetton Way and Douro Path, the busiest travel lanes in the entire Continuum. Due to its strategic importance, Palatine is afforded its own special detachment of Royal Navy vessels. Despite such lofty veneration, Palatine is an overcrowded planet. As a result, atmospheric scrubbers do struggle at times to maintain appropriate levels of environmental stability. It is believed that overpopulation is a major driver within the Continuum to continually push outward so that societal stress can be alleviated. Nevertheless, the need to provide housing and additional support has led to various underground complexes being constructed, now known as undercities. ![]() Due to the near permanent wartime footing, Palatine is under martial law, a notable exception in the Continuum. Recently, High Command has discussed moving the Nexus to Ceres, due to increased security threats and societal unrest in the undercities. Unlike other planets in the Core, Palatine has been sacked twice. Its first sacking occurred shortly after "the Event" when insurrectionist forces conducted a surprise strike deep in Continuum space. Its second sacking occurred during the Troubles when then First Counsel Calig betrayed the Continuum and sided with the insurrectionists, leading to the rise of the Noble Houses on Palatine and Cere as they formed a custodian government in the meantime. Despite its history, there are not many ground defenses on Palatine. The High Command (Command Authority) have decided long ago that if Palatine were to become a frontline city, it was best to use the population stranded as shields, or to abandon the planet altogether.
