Following the founding of Lovalico as a colony during the golden age of human expansion, the initial volunteers were heavily derived from the peoples of the former Brazilian territories with a very large number of Greeks recruited. Both regions having been devastated by climactic shifts and the massive devastation of the Resource Wars, it was not particularly difficult to convince many of the vast numbers of refugees to emigrate (and in doing so hopefully negate refugee crises and open a new supply of resources to Earth). The Catholic Church, struggling to protect the faithful on a ruined planet and newly flush with converts hoping to find solace in god that could not be found in life, determined that it would be best to assist outbound colonists where they could and dispatched a delegation and officially ordained the Bishop of Lovalico before the colony had even been founded, sending a young priest along for the ride. The Orthodox Patriarchy of Greece sent one of their own number to help keep the faith, though the Orthodoxy had been more severely disrupted by the wars and climate and thus could not afford to send quite as many resources. Still, bearing a Relic (a scrap of the Shroud of Lazarus) and many, many colonists packed in like cordwood, the Colony Ship that founded Lovalico made the journey safely, and it was with great enthusiasm that the early colonists set about building churches and homes as well as working to map their new world. In the earliest years of colonization, there was some tension between the Orthodox and Catholics, a little wary of one another's unfamiliar doctrines, but eventually things settled between the churches as the colony's other problems mounted. Despite plentiful biomass, arable land was somewhat scarce at Lovalico's initial colony site, necessitating major earthworks projects that left the colonists too tired to really argue over religion. As the first towns grew and eventually formed Lovalico-City, political tensions began to arise between the nascent military and corporate interests who partially funded the colony, as well as the civilian government. Despite both churches best efforts (and the small Hellenic Revivalist Movement), Lovalico descended into the cyclical civil wars that would mark its history to the present day. The only real good news was that because of the friendly relations between the Patriarchs and the Holy See, religious genocide movements were utterly quashed by simultaneous denouncements and the occasional excommunication from all religious powers on Lovalico. During the Onslaught, the Christian and Hellenic sects present on Lovalico experienced a massive increase in converts due to fear of literal vampires from space coming to eat their children. With the complete destruction of Earth and the loss of all of humanity's holy-sites, a cold fear gripped the people of Lovalico... when a miracle arrived. A Cardinal named Darryl arrived, wounded and traumatized but alive, bringing with him several of the highest ranking priests of the Catholic faith and many relics thought utterly lost to the ages. The arrival of a battered cargo-ship carrying much of the Jesuit Order's legendary library and a haggard few survivors only further boosted morale, with a sensation of divine providence infusing the hearts of the people. Lovalico's dictatorship, encouraged by the new Lovalico-Catholic Papacy declaring a Holy War against the Venkath, threw its meager resources into the Shield Fleet, and eventually the war ended in Humanity's victory, just as the survivors of Earth's Vatican had proclaimed was God's will. In the current days, the Lovalico-Catholic Church remains the dominant faith on Lovalico, and despite maintaining archaic views on birth-control and strange ideas about the proper structure of a church, they maintain their strength as a mighty humanitarian power in disaster response to Lovalico's destructive weather patterns and the occasional interstellar mishap they are capable of responding to. The Lovalico-Catholic Church also commands several small Orders, including an Order Hospitaller and re-established Order Templar, as well as the recovering Jesuits. |
