Growing up on the Atlantic Ocean, Mackenzie was always on the beach. If she wasn't splashing around in the ocean, she was exploring tidal pools, looking for small sea shells and other treasures. She has always harbored a deep fascination with marine life. At a young age, Mackenzie was playing in the shallow waters as she always did when she felt something squish beneath her feet. She had stepped on fish before -- but this was unlike anything she had ever felt in her life. Her entire body was sent into shock, her fingers and toes and each of her limbs all falling completely numb. Mackenzie lost her footing and fell back into the water, submerging herself completely. Water filled her lungs. Mackenzie was drowning.
By sheer dumb luck, a couple of her neighbours were out for a walk on the beach when they rushed over and grabbed her. The pair lugged her to shore and pushed the water out from her lungs. Sputtering and flailing, gasping for air, Mackenzie was brought back to life.
For the next few months after the incident, Mackenzie fell extremely ill. Specialists found that Mackenzie had been poisoned with a contagion that they had never seen before. She was pulled from her school and prescribed bed rests. The doctors told her parents they were unsure if she was going to make it. Her mother spent the entire time sitting by her bedside and doting on her every request, determined to make every moment with her daughter count. By what seemed like a miracle, Mackenzie began to grow stronger again, and her will to live began to thrive like it had never had in the past. It was almost as if something inside of her was fighting for her life, and taking no prisoners.
After a few months of illness and recovery, everything was back to normal ... Except for that Mackenzie had lost her drive to spend time near bodies of water anymore, fearing that she might fall ill again.
It wasn't until one night, when the full moon illuminated the starry sky above the beach outside her house, that Mackenzie sat in her windowsill, gazing a the reflection of the lunar rock in the distance. She remembered how the water had always made her felt so free ... and she decided it was time for a midnight walk. She bundled up her belongings and headed out, trudging across the rocks and the sands to the waning tide, careful not to step on anything bizarre. The water felt warm on her feet. She took a few more brave steps out before tearing the rest of her clothes off and wading out into the ocean completely. Something felt off. It wasn't an uncomfortable feeling, but something that she had never felt before. There was an urge for her to submerge herself under the water completely, it was a feeling she couldn't ignore. Mackenzie dived in. This was the beginning.
She felt something tingling on her lower half of her body, her legs aching like her bones were being broken in every location. Fighting the urge to scream, Mackenzie flailed about underneath the surface. She looked down in horror as she saw that her legs had become fused together, much like a fictional mermaid. Thick, shiny scales were beginning to cover her pale flesh all the way down to her feet. Those had grown out as well, flattening themselves out like long fins of a Beta Fish. Mackenzie felt a sharp pain on either side of her hips, noticing that the skin around them was cut into something now reminiscent of a fish's gills. The flailing stopped. She didn't notice right away, but she wasn't holding her breath anymore... The gills were doing the breathing for her.
Mackenzie ran her hands over her iridescent fish tail, sure that she was hallucinating from illness. But everything felt real to the touch. She tried to move her legs and found that the fins flipped and propelled her backwards at a speed she wasn't used to swimming at. The first transformation was complete.
Being too scared to go on, Mackenzie flipped herself out of the deep water, the moment she re-emerged to the surface, she felt the same pain she had before. Her fin was now separating into two legs, the scales and fins retracting back inside. Feet shrinking back to normal size and the gills on her hips closing over. She looked, as she had before as normal as ever.
Mackenzie sat on the shore and sobbed silent tears for a few minutes before gaining the courage to try this again; heeding the same result. Confirming that this was certainly not a dream, she gathered up her belongings and headed back for her house, mulling over the fact that she was indeed ... very different than she was before. A freak. An outcast, even more so now than she had been when she was in school.
Weeks went by before Mackenzie finally confronted her parents about it. Her father, who had been a research assistant at a lab out of town didn't seem entirely surprised by the news. In fact, when informed of it he gravely explained that there had been a study done on certain marine life that had been contaminated with something that could only be described as alien. He also happened to mention that one of the leaders on the project was looking into cases like hers, and that he was gathering people around her age for the purpose of study. This would be how Mackenzie heard for the first time about Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. She met with her father's associate and once she had gone through rigorous tests and examinations, Mackenzie was deemed a mutant. She was enrolled immediately at the school, and the following summer was shipped off there by her parents. This is what brought her amongst her own kind for the first time, prepared to turn this problem into a power.

Since the frequent attacks on the school, Mackenzie's mental stability has wavered. She has been known to have random outburts of anger or hysteria when triggered or angry. Mackenzie can be heard shouting often from the dorms, or the hub, or the classroom.
While it is not known what is making her so moody, it is suspected to do with the bullying that she's been enduring lately from her fellow peers.

  • Benji Parker: My ... Boyfriend? We ... fight a lot but I wouldn't trade Benji for the world.

  • Viskat Fletcher My sweetest Viskat. She's a good friend and I wish that she was treated better than she is. She deserves more credit than she gets.

  • Clare Neveah She's like a little sister to me, I'm so grateful to have her around because Benji gets hurt /a lot/.

  • Lupa Martin Little shit punched me right in the face after I tried to help him. Ungrateful little brat.

  • Kimber Grey She seemed harmless at first ... she almost seemed nice. Now I'm afraid if I look at her the wrong way she's going to strangle me in my sleep.

  • Thomas and Marc They are attached at the hip and therefore attached in my mind as such. I think the two of them have enough of an ego for the entire student body. Can't deny that they're brave, though.

  • Belcher Fletcher I trusted Belcher at first but he's since shown me his true colours and just like Viskat warned me ... he's a jerk. He'll get what's coming to him if it's the last thing I do.
