Habboon Username: Czechmate Character Name: Ruben Prospero Character Alias: Sloth Character Age: 18 Character Gender: Male Character Origin: USA Character Powers: Matter Deceleration
PERSONALITY - Ruben is a lazy, smartass, clever teenager, who would rather spend his days sleeping or arguing with other people. He lives for fast cars and fast women, and while his powers reflect his lazy, slow to move personality, it also keeps him from getting in fights when he opens his mouth. He has a strong passion for cartoons.
POWER - Matter Deceleration
- APP1 - Ruben is able to drain the kinetic energy from a moving object, causing it to ultimately slow down to a point that the object is easily dealt with. For example, if a punch is swung at Ruben, he can slow down the fist by draining the kinetic energy from it to easily sidestep from the attack, or better yet, slow down the rest of the body and let the punch hit him, causing him to take damage, yet causing the thrown fist to stretch the body forward, thereby causing aches and cramps in the joint. If a piano is about to fall on top of Ruben, he is able to slow it down to give him enough time to move away. The speed at which he can slow something down to is entirely relevant to the situation. While slowing down someone charging at him is child's play, slowing down a falling skyscraper isn't an easy task. This being said, he CAN negate the powers of someone with super speed, though this causes immense focus on just maintaining that negation. In reality, the person with super speed would move at average speeds, and would still be able to attack a defenseless Ruben because Ruben would have to focus on negating their powers and couldn't duel. This effectively makes Ruben a supporting character in such a situation. However, whether it be dodging and countering attacks, or slowing down a bouncer to sneak into a nightclub, this is the core of Ruben's abilities. Attacks take into consideration the size, speed, and force of an attack. Slowing down bullets is easy, because they generate less than a tonne of force each, and are quite small. However, a car being thrown at him, or being punched by someone with super strength, are much harder to stop. At about 3 tonnes of force is when he begins to slow down. This works in a similar manner to his speed negation. While he can do it, it takes tremendous focus and effort on his part. Can he handle punches from an average man, and survive a fist fight or a fire fight? Absolutely, no cooldown and infinite maintainability on punches, bullets, basic weaponry, and the like. When it comes to superpowered weaponry? He has to wait about 30 seconds to a minute between each speed negation, slowing of someone with super strength, etc.
- APP2 - Ruben's abilities don't just affect others, but also himself. He can slow down his own body to achieve various effects, the simplest being to stop himself from taking damage from a fall. He can even use this ability to glide through the air, by slowing himself down from a high jump to successfully sustain limited flight. While he would glide down and can't actually hover or levitate with this, he is able to combat the more...lethal effects of gravity. He has trained this skill in particular to allow him to maintain the ability until he is safe, restricting him from just losing focus and plummeting to his death. Obviously, there is no cooldown on him saving himself from a fall, since it's so minor. However, he can only perform his gliding ability every few minutes. Though realistically, since he can't move upwards with it, it'd take him a few minutes to get back up to a decent-sized height anyway, so this cooldown is irrelevant and unnoticeable.
- APP3 - Ruben is able to concentrate his ability to slow down everything around him, thus causing him to move at what seems like super speeds. This takes enough concentration that he couldn't possibly focus on combat at the same time, thereby limiting him to only using this to practical uses. Also, due to Ruben's lazy nature, and while seeming like he's moving at super speeds, still has to walk from place to place, this only mimics the effects of moving at super speeds. In the grand scheme of things, this allows Ruben to move at super speeds relative to the world around him, while still keeping his own sluggish pace. Due to matter deceleration actually slowing down the movement of an entire person, including their eyes, it's safe to say that while in this form, he's practically untraceable in certain conditions, and even glimpses of him are merely flashes of light. However, since it is hard enough for him to maintain the ability on its own, and can't do anything else besides move while in this state, it pretty much acts as a fancy teleportation, and he can only maintain the form for, what seems to the people affected, seconds. In reality, he maintains this form for about 3 minutes while everyone else is affected. This means that Ruben can walk or run away from his location for 3 minutes, before his control is lost. While normal people feel like only seconds have passed, Ruben has, in reality, activated this power, spent 3 minutes moving around, and let it deactivate on its own. This means he can basically teleport short distances, that are the equivalent of running from that original position for 3 minutes. There is a cooldown of about a minute between each use.
- APP4 - While organic lifeforms are too complex for Ruben to deal with, he is effectively able to slow down things such as machines, devices, and other forms of technology to a point of uselessness, and depending on the situation, even destruction of the device. For example, slowing a single wheel on a car down, while the other 3 push forward, would cause strain on the slowed wheel. A water wheel that's slowed down to the point where it can't turn water will eventually be destroyed under the pressure of the water. The cooldown and stability time are based more on the affected object rather than Ruben's own abilities. Slowing a cell phone down to damage processing speed is easy due to its size, requiring infinite stability and no cooldown. Slowing a Sentinel down by even one mph takes tremendous focus and would easily knock Ruben out afterwards.
- APP5 - While not an actual ability, it should be noted that all of Ruben's abilities rely on concentration, as aforementioned. He can dodge attacks like no other, and in many scenarios could easily win a one-on-one, hand-to-hand duel. However, he can generally only focus on one target at once. He cannot handle multiple people attacking at the same time, and he would almost have to resort to running away when numbers aren't on his side. Ruben can easily handle himself and makes for a great support character, but he is by no means able to handle groups and areas which allow him little to no focus, and must resort to tactics in such a scenario. His speed mimicry (see APP3) allows him to move through a battlefield and escape easily, but he has no abilities that let him deal with more than one person at a time. It should also be noted that his abilities are limited to matter and only matter. This makes him vulnerable to mental abilities, and any attacks that aren't made of matter (psionic blasts, energy blasts, etc.)
