The Crew This is gonna be my review for the game 'The Crew' which I have played on the PC for over three weeks now and I personally think that this deserves a review. It's an online racing game with a massive open world map. The map is the US itself and it covers coast to coast with six major cities in-between. The world is huge. Roads that stretches as far as the eye can see, beautiful scenery, and a lot of things for you or for your friend to do. I played this game with a good friend of mine, and we did the story mode together, which can actually be completed by doing a coop gameplay. The whole map is open to you once you finish the tutorial. There are no closed sections you have to unlock or anything. It's open to you from the very start! The Map The map is huge. You can start for example on the east coast in New York, and drive all the way over to the west coast to Los Angeles. I've done this at least five times already and I can say that it was a wonderful experience. The first coast to coast run I did took me more than an hour to drive. That is one hour in real life time. That is how huge the map is. Second run I did was with a faster car which took me around an hour to forty minutes max. If you have a really tuned car, you will get from one end to the other very quickly! The map contains grass, deserts, mountain areas and even snow in the northern parts of the game! The world is not only huge and massive, it's also beautiful! I've played a lot of racing games in my time and I have to say that this racing game has the most beautiful scenery in a racing game I've ever seen. The graphics are amazing and mind blowing. You can never get sick of it! While driving from coast to coast, the scenery did change a lot while you were driving past. I was most focused on the scenery while driving than I was on the road because of how beautiful it looks like. The scenery changes each time you enter a new state in the game, as you would expect it to do, of course. I spent most of my time driving in third-person than in the first person view, just so I could admire the scenery so much more. The roads in this game are the most realistic I've ever seen in a game. I can tell that the developers of this game has really put their eyes to attention of details, and this is just the roads! There are roads upon roads upon roads! They're never ending! There are roads from country roads, dirt roads, mountain roads and the big highway that you can drive all around the map itself! It's even got wonderful draw distance. The first cost to coast run I did in the game, had me going up in the mountains just outside of Los Angeles and as I was driving through those mountains, I could see the highway that was lit up with it's lights for the highway which looked absolutely gorgeous. The mountain I was driving in had no lights and the only lights you could see was the lights from your car. Very realistic feeling! That wonderful draw distance is not only for lights, it's almost for everything. If you are about to enter a major city at night time, you will see the lights that are on the buildings that looks just amazing! The cities themselves feels very big and a very alive look. It doesn't have much people on the side roads or anything like that, but to me, it felt alive. As you drive along the map, you will discover landmarks. Landmarks in cities and around the map gets you XP and money for visiting it. You can visit the statue of liberty, to downtown Los Angeles. There are so many landmarks in this game to discover and I haven't even discovered half of them! Driving in the dirt was an experience I didn't quite like than on a proper road and this game has tons of racing on the dirt and on mountain roads. If you take a cool looking sports car on the dirt, you'll find that it's not as easy as any other vehicle. I've tried it multiple times and it always made me chuckle, because you can't take a sports car that is meant on the asphalt, on a dirt road. I found that very amusing. The Cars The cars in this game are awesome. Most of them anyways. I haven't driven all cars in the game but I've driven all types of cars. The cars do have a lot of details on them, but personally, it's not enough. For example in the interior view, some cars have a inbuilt GPS which doesn't even function. The interior is not even lit up around you. The only thing that is lit up is the gauges of the car. Some modern cars have lights on the actual steering wheel, but not in this game. Small details like that matter in a huge game like this one. I found that a bit disappointing. Apart from the details, there are a wide array of customization to the cars! Each car have their own unique set of parts. There are a wide array of paint jobs in the game as well that you can apply to your car and these paint jobs works for most cars in the game. The paint jobs have different categories where you can choose them in. There is a paint job for everyone. Every car in the game can be tuned in different classes, but not all of them and before you buy yourself a new car, make sure to check what class you can tune that car if you have a favorite class. S Class The S class is the street performance vehicle with which you start out in. You can customize this car however you so please. D Class The D class is the dirt spec for your car, where you can customize it to have whatever a dirt vehicle needs for a dirt race. Extra lights, fat tires, you name it, It's got it. P Class The P class is the performance specs. Like the S class, this spec is for the roads as this does upgrade your car in speed if not handling. R Class The R class is for the raid vehicle. This class is just like the D class where it covers the dirt itself, but this is a spec that is meant for very rough terrain, as you get to upgrade your car for rough terrain races. If you like driving off road in rough terrain and just everywhere, then this class is definitely for you. C Class The C class is for the circuit spec vehicle. Just like S and the P class, this is a street vehicle that is meant for the asphalt. With the C class, you get to upgrade your car just like a proper racing car, almost like a NASCAR car, but not quite. The C class offers more speed, better handling and it looks so much better if you know how to customize it right. There are other classes that are in the game, but I have not tried them out yet as they are part of a DLC that is called Wild Run. I will buy that DLC in the future and then later update this review further. The classes that come with the DLC are the Monster Tuning, Drift Tuning and Drag Tuning. Monster Tuning allows you to basically tune your vehicle just like a Monster Truck. The drift tuning speaks for itself and so does the drag tune as well. The Story I will not write too much about the story as it does include spoilers. The story itself was a very good one indeed for a racing game. I liked it a lot. The missions for the story, not so much. The missions in the story mode is basically doing the same thing over and over again. Racing people, avoiding cops, ramming people off the road. That is pretty much what you do for the missions involving the story mode. I didn't expect anything different from it being a racing game, but I did expect something different and not the same all the time. The story mode took me three weeks to complete. It's a huge a game and there are a lot of stuff to do, but I think you can beat the story mode in a week or at least a few days if you play non stop. I played it with a friend and we were not always available at a certain time. The AI What can I say about the AI? Well, they're stupid for one, but no AI in any game are perfect. The AI in this game aren't as horrible as I've seen in a racing game. In a race, the AI must be the most stupidest AI I have ever seen! I've cried my eyes out on how BAD they are in a race! The AI are so hilariously bad that sometimes, there isn't a challenge in the race. I was playing yesterday and I was doing a LONG race that took me more than an hour to finish. The race was for 160,000 dollars that was going from L.A all around the map on the highway and back to L.A just where you started the race. Almost at the start of every race the AI will crash into each other, making them spin out of control or just drive into a car on the road. I was in third place in that big race and the AI in front crashes INTENTIONALLY in a tree! I laughed so bad I almost lost control of my car. The AI in races drive into almost everything. It feels like you are driving with real people online, but they are the stupidest racers ever. When you are in first place in the same exact spec car as the other AI drivers, they will gain up on you and just fly past you, even though, the horsepower is EXACTLY THE SAME! I found this very ridiculous and frustrating as well. Unless you have a hundred horsepower more than the AI, the race will feel like it's on very hard difficulty. The big race I was doing yesterday involved the C class type of cars. My car was on 862 HP and the rest of them had only 830 and they still could catch up while I was driving 240mph! It's insane! But luckily for me, the AI was stupid enough to make enough mistakes of driving into buildings and cars on the road that I won the race. In this game, you can actually see how far away a driver is. I was shocked beyond belief to see that as I was closing in on the finish line, they were about 20 miles away from me so I had plenty of time to finish that one hour race. Activities There are numerous activities for you to do once you complete the story mode. These activities will help you upgrade your cars horsepower. You can do speed tests which involves driving fast and staying on the road. You can jump onto ramps to a certain distance to earn money and XP and a car part for your car. The better the jump, the better the part for your car. Slalom races where you have to drive around certain check points to get that car part you so badly want for your car. There is much more activities for you and your friends to do once you complete the story mode. Daily challenges allows you to earn money in the game as well as you have to do certain things to get them. Bugs There are numerous bugs within in the game and I have experience a few of them. My most annoying bug with this game, and this is what happened to me, I am not sure if it happens to anyone else. When you want to tab out of the game for whatever reason, the game flickers back and forth to the desktop and back to the game. That is the most annoying bug I've had with any PC game I've played so far. People have also the problem of finishing a race where the map doesn't want to load properly, you get stuck in the map and you have to re spawn back on the road. Fortunately, this hasn't happened to me yet, but it sounds very disturbing indeed. Since this is an open world online game, you know there are gonna be connection issues between players. I haven't experience much of it, but there has been a few times where either one of the players had to restart the whole game just so you could invite people to a crew. Ridiculous. My Verdict After playing this game for three weeks, having a lot of funny and frustrating moments, I'm gonna give this game a 7/10 I would normally for a big game like this give a 10/10 but the amount bugs and problems that I have experienced and what could be better, I'm giving it 7/10. You either love this game or you hate it. I'm in-between loving it and hating it. + Massive and beautiful Open World + A lot of Multiplayer content - Annoying bugs - Stupid and frustrating AI - Repetitive races and missions You can get this game for free until October 11th on the uPlay store! The game is available for PC, Xbox One and PS4! |
