Mel & Mallory at the Gym - Mallory Adroit

[Fade into the treadmill line at Ziggy's Gym in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It's mid-morning and the whole gym is a hive of activity already. Here at the treadmill line we find a stark visual contrast going on. Several of the gym's paying customers are loping around in slow lesiurely jogs. While the woman on the treadmill at the right hand end sprints like a crazy lady. At least until she loses control and is spilled off the end of the treadmill. As she dusts herself off and kneels at the end of the treadmill we finally get the opportunity to recognize her as gym owner and Pitt wrestler Mallory Adroit. All may well physically but Mallory's ego seems to be badly bruised as she slams a fist down on the running belt.]

Mallory: Oh come ON!! First the jump rope breaks. Then the barbell nearly misses my foot. Now THIS?!!

[She steps back on the treadmill and pounds her right hand on the guardrail.]

Mallory: You have GOT to be kidding me!

[Melinda Rhodes had just stepped only minutes before. She sports workout clothes; running shoes, gray sweats, a white tanktop, and a dark blue hoodie. Her blond streaked black hair is tied back in a high ponytail. With her duffle still over her shoulder, she makes her way over to Mallory with a quirked brow.]

Mel: What happened? Did one of those neighborhood kids put butter on the treadmill again? Ralph nearly broke his hip last week because of that.

Mallory: I don't think so. Tread feels right. I think it's just me. Maybe I'm just trying too hard.

[Mel nods her head. She settles down on the work out bench nearby, depositing her duffle bag down beside her. There she starts applying weights to her barbell. There's still a bit of scratchiness in her throat as she speaks.]

Mel: I think I'm going to try and start bulking up a bit. With the competition at The Pitt, I definitely need to get stronger.

Mallory: I hear that. And it's not like that competition's about to get any easier just because we're both out of the title tournament. Apathy's back and she'll have that new Valkyrie girl by her side. Then I gotta I deal with Kijo again at the PPV. And let's not forget I got ahead of myself and threw a challenge at Kiora Donavon for the show after that. My plate's getting so full I'm not even sure I can see the darn thing anymore.

[Mel nods as she tops the barbell out at around two hundred, then removes her hoodie sweater and tosses it onto her bag. She rises from the bench with her feet apart and lifts her arms up over her head. Standing on her tip toes, she stretches her back with a soft groan, then dips to one side with a hand on her hip and one arm pointing to her left. She repeats this motion, getting limbered up before she lifts weights.]

Mel: I saw. Got some advice for you too.

[The Rebel dips forward, not caring how many people stare at the nice heart shape of her ass as she touches her fingers to the floor four times front to back to stretch out her lower back.]

Mel: When's the last time you went out with your husband somewhere?

Mallory: Honestly, I think our latest dinner date may have been the hospital cafeteria after Apathy drove that infernal letter opener into me.

[Mel nods once more, now doing sideway lunges, left to right with her hands on her hips.]

Mel: After you're done here, take him out for a sandwich at that one diner you and your mom like so much. Talk. Get your head out of the game for a few minutes. Maybe enjoy a little family time with Carli tonight too while you're at it.

[She then sits down on the bench, giving her wrists a quick wringing.]

Mel: You're so wound up right now that I think you're about to snap.

Mallory: Yeah. Maybe you're right

[Melinda then reaches into her bag and starts to tape her hands up.]

Mel: You know, I don't normally play psychiatrist right? Usually you're patting me on the shoulder and either saying, "Easy killer" or "It's gonna' be ok."

[A bit of a wry smirk plays on her lips.]

Mallory: So true, I guess I am getting a chance to practice what I preach. But it's just so hard to relax lately. You know what that main event was for me last week? For a while there, I thought I was going to lose another friend who's like a sister to me because of that damn zombie.

[Mel rubs at her neck a bit, nodding once more.]

Mel: I won't lie. I was in game mode, full on. The surprise attack gave her the edge, but even when I had the tables turned, she had my number.

[Her shoulders slump forward a bit as she leans towards Mallory.]

Mel: I didn't win that match. I survived that match. Make no mistake, I felt like I was in a match with our old friend, Ursula. Kijo isn't as big or heavy, but she folded me up like a damn accordion.

[She takes in a deep breath.]

Mel: I don't scare easy, Mallory, but I'm not afraid to say she scares me. Then again, so did my sister at times too.

Mallory: Oh I know. Cassidy sure took pride in stirring up trouble. But I can't even afford to think ahead to Kijo. Not with Apathy back looming over us. Last time I saw that battle axe, she tried to end me. I'm not about to look past her. And this Valkyrie. I don't know much about her. But I do know the valkyries of old were assigned the task of carrying the heroes slain in battle to their final reward. If this chick is a match for Apathy, she may take that concept a little too seriously and not realize she bears the name of a heroic being. I wish it were as easy as focus on Kijo, stop her at the pay per view and get on with life. But this is one time that taking things one day at a time is a terrible burden. We gotta get through this tag match first. Then the other stuff can follow from there.

Mel: Spot me?

[She lays back on the bench and grips the barbell. She then eases it off, and grits her teeth as she lets bar bell down, then raises it up.]

Mallory: Be happy to.

[Mallory circles around behind the weight bench and takes her position.]

[Mel starts her reps, breathing in and out slow and even with each lift and drop of the two hundred pound barbell.]

Mel: Thanks. Yeah This Valkyrie gal is something else, though I didn't like her introduction much. Guess we'll have to teach her some ettiquette on the 29th, eh? As for Apathy, you leave that bitch to me.

Mallory: Ettiquette sounds good for starters. From there maybe a little historical perspective. And finish with a personal safety lesson. Like never partner up with a woman who's willing to use office supplies as weapons

[Mel's reps continue even and smooth, her face reddening slightly.]

Mel: Apathy took me out of the Championship hunt and stabbed my best friend. I'm already on edge because of Kijo and while I think I'm doing a good job keeping it all together, it's only because I know I'm going to get my hands on Apathy and get a shot at breaking the rubber band tie between us.

[The tenth rep passes, but Mel keeps going, a sheen of perspiration starting to form on her brow.]

Mel: You just gotta' find a focus, Mallory. I know there's alot going on upstairs. Maybe tonight, you just chill and have a night out with the family. Maybe take in a movie or something. I hear that movie Stonewall might be right up your alley.

[Fifteenth press now...]

Mallory: Please tell me that wasn't the one Siobhan and Muirne were going on about.

Mel: No, it's something to do with some guy figuring out politics or something. I didn't watch the full trailer, just part of it before I skipped to watch two kittens beat the crap out of a rubberband ball on youtube.

[She smirks.]

Mallory: Sounds like you made the right viewing choice with the kittens.I have no love for award bait movies.

[Mel chuckles as she reaches rep twenty five.]

Mel: Well it was a suggestion. I don't really know what's playing in the theater right now. Could always go to the good old Jersey Pier too. Play some Skee ball. At least what's been rebuilt after that massive flood out last year.

Mallory: I do love a good game of Skee Ball. Maybe you're right Excuse me while I check with the sitter network?

Mel: Sure, no problem.

[She continues to rep, now in the mid thirty's range. Slow and steady, but now with a good build up of sweat on her upper body.]

Mel: You know that alot of this is part of Kijo's game, right? Trying to get you unnerved and off balance. She's really good, but one thing wouldn't play in her favor against you and it's the same thing that gives you an edge against people like me or Apathy, or anyone else you face in the ring.

[Mel grits her teeth as she finally starts to feel the burn.]

Mel: We act on instinct. Thinking is what we do when we break for a second. You? You're always thinking and moving. Kijo thinks a little bit more, but only so much. Apathy? She's dangerous, but only thinking a single move ahead. I always credited you as the brains of the outfit. I know my role in this match coming up. I'm the tank, taking the abuse and buying you time to come up with a plan.

[She's now at the forty mark and pushing hard to reach a full fifty reps.]

Mel: You're the surgical striker. The strategist. I'm the running back to your quarterback. Valkyrie is an unknown, but she's younger and in better shape than the three of us, so I imagine she'll be playing my role on Apathy's team up. That's only if they are willing to play ball.

[A smile crosses Mel's lips that comes off as a half grimace as she nears that fifty mark.]

Mel: Apathy may work with teams, but I get the feeling that Valkyrie isn't a team player in the slightest. So that's another tactical advantage in our favor.

Mallory: I hope you're right. That would sure make my life easier. But for now, I should get on finding that sitter while it's fresh in my mind.

[Mallory dashes off toward the office.]

[Mel's arms quiver slightly as she lifts the barbell up one last time and drops it securely on it's hook rest. She then slides forward on the bench and sits up, a smile on her face as she watches Mallory run off.]

Mel: You go do that. I'll keep prepping for the match.
