Most of my memories of Den are from his most recent stint but I have gone back and watched some of his old episodes and what a character!

You don't get much more iconic than Den and Angie.

Gutted. May he rest in peace.

Leslie's portrayal of Den definitely set a benchmark. One of the very first EastEnders icons (without whom the show would almost definitely not be as loved and popular as it has become) and one of the most charismatic and entertaining male soap actors of all-time in my opinion. The original alpha male.

Obviously and rightfully so, this is more about reflecting on the death of a real living man and not necessarily his character but it's times like this I really feel a pang of nostalgia for the Watts family. Both the 80s and 00s incarnations. How I would have loved for their 00s incarnation to last longer than just under two years. I'm not sure how the likes of Den, Dennis and Chrissie would have fitted into the subsequent eras but that set-up was one of the most exciting, glamorous and powerful units I've ever seen on soap and to see their reign last just a bit longer would have been phenomenal. Every single character in that unit, even Vicki, just lit up the screen and brought so much darkness and history with them. I despair at its quick disintegration. And I despair that, from a symbolic point of view, none of the Watts family really exist anymore.

If it wasn't for his return to the show in 2003, I honestly doubt I'd be as invested in EastEnders as I am now. I was obsessed with all things Sharon, all things Dennis and all things Kalfie at that point in time and his return really solidified my love for EastEnders.

I know I've already said it in this thread - and my username is a testament to my love for all things Watts - but RIP Leslie. Without the Den and Angie effect, who knows whether we'd be discussing the show in 2018?
