EastEnders battleaxe Cora Cross is returning to the soap next month - and it looks like she is going to be creating more havoc than ever.

Straight-talking Cora has not been in the BBC show since February when she attended the funeral of her granddaughter Abi Branning.

Since then, Cora has been looking after her great-grandchild – baby Abi – who miraculously survived her pregnant mum’s death-plunge off the Queen Vic on Christmas Day.

Cora – played by Ann Mitchell, 79 – and the baby’s scheming grandad Max Branning are in a bitter custody battle for the tot.

Max and his drug addict wife Rainie are only together as part of his attempts to get his clutches on the baby.

An insider said: “Max and Rainie are stunned when Cora shows up out of the blue with little Abi and are even more shocked when she allows them to spend time with her.”

“It soon becomes clear she has an ulterior motive… is she about to ruin their chances of getting baby Abi?” Our guess is very much yes – and with good reason.

Inevitable but pleasant.

Cora and Rainie's relationship is fascinating, when the show has actually chosen to explore it. I am interested in seeing them together again. It is hard to believe Cora has only been around for a few years. She feels like a character who has been on the show for a lot longer.

We were robbed of those big, lamp lit two hander scenes between Cora and Rainie in 2014. Cora's flat was one of my very favourites and it could have been the perfect setting for Cora and Rainie's dynamic to be given the character study it deserves.

I'm intrigued for Cora's return. Ann Mitchell always works well against Tanya Franks and Jake Wood.

2014 was a great year for the show. The Cora and Rainie material was very underrated, and definitely one of the hidden gems. Tanya Franks is a brilliant actress.
