It has been a painfully long five years this year, since the Queen Vic exchanged hands and the Carter family took over. They were once a fresh and exciting group of characters, they are now tired and overused. The best thing about the pub, is that it provides the characters a centralised meeting point so we can see their interactions outside of a domestic setting. When you think about the amazing reveals we’ve had in their over the years and the amazing parties and punch ups, the pub is definitely an icon in its own right. I think now though, the Carters behind the bar is a tired dynamic which is dragging the show down. The pub is no longer, a place for fun, but is just home to the Carters and their never ending drama. It is about time that the pub got some new owners, so we can see it be revitalised and freshened up. The Carter family as landlords is all played out at this stage. I would like to see some new blood behind the bar. I think that it would really shake up the show. Kat would be very good as a landlady, she deserves her chance to shine with better writing after the poor stint last time. |

Until we get a real bar staff, and we stop getting stories about whether the owner will lose the pub or how the owner has no money, I don't know if anything will change. |

For such a long time I wanted Sharon back behind the bar but unless there's a drastic overhaul in the writing and she goes in a new direction, I've no interest in seeing her in The Vic. Kat is an inspired choice of landlady when she's at her best. She definitely didn't get a fair shot at it between 2010 - 13. |

Sharon Watts at the helm, Whitney, Danny Pennant and Tracy as the core staff, with maybe Mo as cleaner listening in on all the gossip would be my little dream unit. Add in Grant and Courtney if Ross ever jumps back in. The power of the Vic, and indeed any soap pub, is that it's the lynchpin set where everyone congregates, but at the end of the night they all head back to their own dramas behind their own doors. When the pub acts as an extension of the owner's front room, as it does for the Carters, the atmosphere dies. The Landlady and the woman who lives above the Vic may be the same character, but those two personas should mix as little as possible. |

The reason I loved Den and Angie so much was the distinct differences between their relationship upstairs and their relationship downstairs. A couple at war when the doors were closed but they always painted on a smile and put on a front to the customers. Mick and Linda don't. Like TOSC says, the Vic is just another place for their dramas to take place. Rarely an episode goes by without their marital dramas spilling out to behind the bar and one of them stropping with the other. So I do definitely agree that a change in dynamic is needed. Kat would be the perfect character to take the reign as she's a character whose spent her life putting her face on and putting on a show. To see her downstairs all smiles and banter and then the more vulnerable side of the character after hours would be a very interesting direction to take both her and the pub in. |

What I also dislike about the pub, is that everyone who works there is either a Carter or an affiliate of the Carters. Excluding Tracey of course! A bar team would be a good idea. I love the idea of Whitney still working there under Kat’s rule. |

There are no characters in their current forms who would work in the Vic. Sharon Mitchell wouldn't. Kat as part of the NuSlaters wouldn't. The closest person to holding the gravitas needed is Mel, and even then it doesn't quite fit. It's Sharon of 2003 who screams landlady. It's Kat of 2005/2016. What's difficult right now is that all the problems with how female characters are being written becomes a lot more apparent when you try to mentally position them in a position of power. With their current characterisation, no one fits any sense of stature. Even Linda Carter. "Powerful" women right now are those who shout and hate each other. That's one of the low points in this era of which I find myself enjoying generally. Edited by The Other Slater Cousin, Jun 27 2018, 07:04 PM.

Sharon Mitchell would be brilliant in the Vic, making rape jokes in between serving pints! |

Would Stacey and Martin work, as landlord and landlady? They would be a curveball, I think. A normal couple making a go of things like Jack and Vera did over on Corrie back when Corrie was actually worth watching. I’d take them over the Carters or a return to the Mitchell family! |

A part of me would be interested in seeing Kat in the Vic again, but I'd really need her to have most of the Slaters (except maybe Big Mo or Jean) not living with her. |
