I do have a feeling this is leading to a grooming storyline between Ray and Hunter. If Yorke has been playing the long game here, then nothing is said or done without reason. We've already seen Hunter secretly contacting Ray without his mother's knowledge and then there's Sharon's (frankly disgusting) comments about a "pretty boy" like him being popular inside which could end up being intended as foreshadowing (very clunky foreshadowing but foreshadowing all the same). |

I AM SO EXCITED. HURRICANE RAY. Yes! I probably should conceal my excitement a bit considering what he'll probably turn out to be, but *that* storyline idea is exactly what we need on EastEnders. Never did I expect to be this excited about the show again. The fact we've had it confirmed that this long game was indeed a long game just makes me 10x more confident. This is EastEnders again. Bring it on. |

This is fantastic news! I understand those of who are enjoying the show right now may be in the minority from what I've seen on other forums but since I became a regular viewer again when Kat returned it seemed evident to me at least that the show was building towards a gritty and engaging Autumn period. It's nice to have some sort of official confirmation of that over blind hope! Mel and Hunter have both been incredible since they arrived on the Square so it's exciting to know that soon they will be leading up a big Autumn storyline. I'm sure Tamzin will excel as she always has done. I'm a big fan of Jack and Mel (do they have a ship name yet?) as I find them to be an exciting and dynamic partnership. It will be very interesting to see how Ray's arrival affects their coupling. Roll on Autumn! |

The news of Ray's arrival already feels like a significant jolt of danger and excitement. Obviously I have posted previously here about what kind of story I'd like to see the character be at the centre of to progress Mel and Hunter forward, and the news of his "Big" and "dark" storyline feels like it won't disappoint. What must be highlighted though, is that Ray is a character we first heard of ;less than six months ago. The never-before-mentioned ex-husband of a character we knew for a few years nearly two decades ago. And yet, this announcement has left us all waiting in anticipation. And that's because TPTB have taken the first period of 2018 to establish Mel Owen as a contemporary character. This isn't a character dining out on her success in 2000. This is a woman hardened by life. They've shown us her steely exterior. They've shown us the ruthless and fierce protection of her son. They've shown us that she has the same heart Mel Healy once did, but which she keeps shielded. So now, when we hear this off-screen character who has been vaguely mentioned is coming in, we immediately care, because we care and are interested and invested in the Mel Owen of today. So, this is why the argument many exhaust that "Nothing is happening" or that John Yorke has no vision, doesn't make sense to me. If Ray had come in when Mel returned for this "big storyline" would we have cared as much as we do today? 2018 has done a fantastic job generally of laying the foundations of these characters. They're letting them breathe. Mel Owen has been bedded in, so her huge Autumn will pack the biggest punch. As Hayley's connection to the Slaters grows over the coming months, the reveal that she betrayed Kat with Alfie will be all the more explosive for the characters and for us viewers. Is the pacing perfect? No. Could the show tighten up that little bit more? Of course. But John Yorke is clearly buillding the show back up again, and that includes giving characters the ability to live their fictional lives before those lives are blown apart. Soaps aren't a six episode drama series. They are the long-game. Edited by The Other Slater Cousin, Jul 2 2018, 01:51 PM.

It’s probably an argument for another day but I do definitely think that the need for instant gratification is killing the soap genre as a whole. When people look back to stories like Sharongate or Stax it’s easy just to remember the big explosive reveals but the thing that made those reveals have the impact they did was the story that was slowly built up beforehand. The bus crash and the gas explosion story both show that it’s easy to blow things up and cause a disaster but without the groundwork to make the viewer care it’s loses any potential it has. I’m excited for the arrival of Ray because of those reasons TOSC has so eloquently outlined above. I care because I know the characters and I’ve seen them just getting by. This storyline wouldnt have had the impact it did if it was Mel’s big return story because the majority of the audience wouldn’t know or care who she was. |

Mel, Hunter and Jack are three of my favourite characters in the show at present so I'm very excited to see the drama Ray brings to their door. EastEnders has been on the up for a while and by the time autumn rolls around, I believe we'll be seeing some really special things.
