We don't have any ice cream around either... ...although come to think about it, there's an ice cream place only a half-hour's walk from our house. |

If it reached a hundred here we'd be cooking. But then our hundred is a lot hotter than yours

What, you talking celsius towr? But yah, It's been in the hundreds here too. Thankfully not today though. (it's really cloudy, and rained yesterday, which has made it a lot cooler) |

Yeah, 100 degrees Celsius = 212 degrees Fahrenheit. So what I think of when I hear "a hundred degrees" is a bit hotter than what you'd be thinking of. Of course, if it were a hundred degrees Rankine, it'd be a lot colder than either of us would like to consider (it's lower than the temperature of liquid nitrogen). In any case I'm glad it's not as hot here as it is over there with you. I don't like heat much... Nor cold for that matter, but at least that's easier to dress for. |

Is Rankine similar to Kelvin? *curious* Went blueberry picking today- yay for blueberry muffins! We also brought home some wintergreen plants to try and transplant. |

Yeah, like Kelvin it starts at absolute zero, but a difference of one degree Rankine equals 1 degree Fahrenheit, whereas a difference of 1 kelvin equals a degree Celsius. Starting at absolute zero makes conversion a lot easier, X degrees Rankine = 9/5*X kelvin (NB. I only learned about it's existence just before my previous post.) |

interesting i understand the reasons for celcious since it's based on water's freezing and boiling points, but it's always sounded so deceptive in real terms "oh my GOSH it's reached 35 degrees!" 30s < 100s so it doesn't sound as intimidating as the heat may be (on the other hand, it does sound pretty cold, but not as cold as the celcious sounds in terms of freezing, but i've always put more importance to the heat since that is harder to adjust your temterature for) |

The funny thing is the Celsius scale used to be the other way around, with 0 the boiling point and 100 the freezing point. But it was pretty quickly reversed. |

Considering it's direct correlation to the Kelvin scale which zeros at Absolute Zero, that strikes me as particularly odd. I wonder why that coulda been. |

Well you have to consider it was only two years after the creation of the Celsius scale that Linnaeus started using 0 as the freezing point. Kelvin's scale was only conceived 104 years after the Celsius scale was created, so most had been using 0 as freezing point for some 102 years already. |

glad they switch it to make more sense i can't imagine why you'd want 0 to be for the hotter temp Dx
