Yah... I'm glad too. Or maybe it's just cause we're used to having hotter temperatures be higher that it would be wierd

I still think base six (or maybe twelve) or hexadecimal woulda been more fun than what appears to be base-ten that we generally run on.

I don't see why base six would be any better/funner. But some power of two might be convenient; octal would probably be easiest, since it's easier to count to 8 on two hands than 16 (just exclude the thumbs).

Oooh, I Like base-8. And I probably only think it would be better/funner because it isn't what I use. I realize this.

Binary is also nice, because you can use it to count to 1023 on your fingers.

I'm sure you've all heard the one about how there are 10 kinds of people?

Those who know binary

And those who don't

There are 10 kinds of people in the world,
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 2 but not greater
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 3 but not greater
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 4 but not greater
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 5 but not greater
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 6 but not greater
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 7 but not greater
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 8 but not greater
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 9 but not greater
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 9+1 but not greater
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 9+2 but not greater
Those that understand number systems with a base smaller or equal to 9+3 but not greater
...

base 12...? But there's only 11 people...*confused* I think I'm missing something. :stare:

Billy Nye, The Science Guy managed to teach me in 2nd grade how binary works and how computers use it in the first five minutes of the computer episode. He was awesome like that. (I liked later in it when he explained barcodes and CDs.) I mean, granted, it's basic of basics, but that's generally how you teach a child.

There are more kinds of people -- there's a whole 10 after all*) -- but I didn't feel like writing down an endless list.

Although I suppose you could argue that if there aren't any people of a kind there is no such kind of people. That would scrap most kinds of people from the list, since most people start by understanding decimal, and not binary.

*) Bear in mind that 10 is 1*B1+0*B0 for some base B. So if we don't specify B, then 10 can be any number greater than 1.
So for example there are never more then 10 people in the world, as long as you adjust the base appropriately. (This makes answering many math questions a lot easier, albeit harder to convince them it's the right answer.)

Yeah, as great as that would be...

I'd have used it in math tests. And I would have had a lot of teachers not terribly accepting of my answer.

Not for math tests...but it would be a great idea to use when debating with my sibling. My dad would probably think it funny (he's a math geek).

It gets even more interesting when you use (non-integer) real numbers as the base of your number system; though I'd avoid numbers smaller than two.
Like, you could have a pi-base, and then put some fruit-filling on top and ...

And if you're angry, counting to ten will be even more distracting:
1, 2, 3, 10.220..., 11.220..., 12.220..., 20.202..., 21.202..., 22.202...,100.010...
