Nope- no have seen it. I don't think they have it in the Library here...

I did waste 8 hours on TVTropes yesterday, though. :sweatdrop:

I'm kind of hesitant to see the Hobbit movies- the trailers don't look all that promising.

It's probably not as good as the book, and the book's probably shorter too

totally ^^;

i think they purposely stretched it out purely for the extra ticket sales, really lol

they've added tons of extra subplots that aren't in the original story...and the movie i just saw TOTALLY added a plot hole! (it feels almost comparable to the last star wars trilogy made lolol)

now the hobbit story really doesn't fit with the lord of the rings XP

i didn't read the book, but i do know the original story of the hobbit...kinda confusing to watch this and see the extra things they added XD i wonder how they're gonna solve all the extra problems by the last movie @_@

that's my two bits :Y i'll still probably end up watching the last movie just to see what they do with it

I'll be honest. The Hobbit was one of the first novels I read and the Lord of the Rings followed shortly thereafter. I re-read before watching each new movie.
Yes, there were some ridiculous changes.

Yes. I still thoroughly enjoyed myself and will enjoy watching the two made so far again more than once. <shrugs>

Also, Shadow:
I went to see Frozen … last weekend? with my sister and mom. Absolutely amazing. I want this movie. It hit my feels in all the right ways. Fully recommend it.

How can you call yourself a fantasy reader if you've never read Lord of the Rings? :'(
Heh....I kid (partly), but you probably should. :P

Dark: I shall bear that in mind and keep it listed as a good movie to watch, then. *nods*

By lying :P

Good thing I don't call myself that, though. I honestly don't know if I'll ever get round to reading it; so little time, so many books.

i'm just a crazy movie person :Y

it's kinda funny....cuz i like movies SO much, i end up being a very harsh critic of anything that comes out these days...or is it just that they really aren't as good as they used to be? XD

I feel like one should always be a bit skeptic whenever the "as good as they used to be" concept rolls around, whatever it is you're referring to.
Too often it's really a matter of difference, better or worse proving a rather nebulous thing to argue. Which isn't to say that the statement is at times accurate, but at the same time it is often not.

Frozen tried a dynamic no Disney movie before had, and (in my own opinion) did it incredibly well. It tells a story that would not have even occurred to me to be told in my first days of Disney movies growing up. - Also people complain a lot about recycling ideas now-days as if it's really any more or less than before.

I'm reminded of something Timothy Zahn says in his collected short stories book I acquired:
Timothy Zahn

This story gave me my first genuine head-on collision with the First Law of Science Fiction: There are few, if any, truly "new" ideas. For a beginning writer it was a bit traumatic, but as it turned out I got off with only minor fender damage and no ticket at all.

I'd just sent off the manuscript to Stan Schmidt at Analog, and was still congratulating myself on such a neat concept as a blind woman who saw through other people's eyes, when my copy of the July 1980 Analog appeared in my mailbox. Which contained the first part of Dean Ing's "Anasazi"... which featured a blind woman who saw through other people's eyes.

I walked around in a permanent wince for six weeks, awaiting with dread the caustic comments that must surely be on their way. But--surprise!--when Stan sent the story back he made no mention whatsoever of the unintentional overlap, merely saying that he liked the story but was too overbooked with novelettes to buy it right away. He must have been sincere, because when I ran it by him again five months later he bought it, again making no mention of "Anasazi."

Which was, I suppose, my introduction to the Second Law of Science Fiction: What you actually do with the idea is the truly important thing.

In absolute terms, there undoubtedly is. :P

And movie-wise you never had so many remakes before there was so much to remake. Although that's more refurbishing than recycling, because in recycling you generally make something new from the material, rather than the same thing again.

oh, i wasn't referring to Frozen...haven't even seen it ^^; but i don't plan to simply because the trailers didn't attract my attention (especially with that snowman that freaks me out just to look at....so that's just a deterrent for me, not saying anything whether the movie is good or not)

as for the recycling, that's what i didn't like much about Avatar...was just Pocahontas with blue skin, really....but on the other hand, it brought that child's movie to be relevant those who are now adults....like the story grew with us, plus the movie was more for the special effects, which were undoubtedly amazing (just story-wise that the movie felt recycled, but it DID have other charm to it)

it's not so much the fact people re-use an idea, but the way in which they do it that gets me most :/ admittedly, "new" ideas for movies end up trying to add too much plot and simultaneously too much action that does not support the plot, at which point the "story" is irrelevant to begin with...that's what bothers me most...

a simple story is often more effective in movies, especially if it plans to be a single movie AND jam packed with action sequences to show off spacial effects...

heck, even star wars had that with the first movie made...all the action supported the simple story that these guys needed to blow up an evil weapon to save the galaxy...nevermind that there where other movies made after that, just the ONE movie was well constructed to include all the fun things in the right way, making it enjoyable to a lot of people that still show it to their kids and grandkids today

alternatively, the ones made in the 2000s were more focused on the special effects than the story...and it was obvious, inventing plot holes that clashed with the earlier made movies and leaving much unsaid in favor of cool lava fight scenes...yes, there are still people who enjoy it, but now story is more relevant because it's supposed to connect with another set of movies within the same major setting and losing that deteriorates the strength of previous success

so i guess mostly, what i am severely critical of are prequels that don't belong to the story they claim to connect...i also do not like remakes, though...especially if it ruins something that was great the first time (how does it ruin it? by being sloppily made...you can tell when a movie was just strung together and then infused with special effects to cover the bad acting and ill-thought-out dialog that doesn't even make sense to form anything of a plot to draw you in...at least for me)

in such cases, simpler stories with simply direct dialogs that move the story forward are better constructed because they leave room for all the action to be the star of the show and infact support eachother in that light

Also, on the topic of fantasy books, I just finished The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. It's the first in his ongoing super-epic fantasy series, and the second book comes out in March. SO GOOOOOOOOD.

You both make good points.
There was just one thing I want to say to the whole Avatar/Pocahontas thing: Pocahontas was far from the first for that story concept either. And personally I couldn't stand that movie, except for a couple of the song-y bits (and probably not the ones you're thinking).

Though my own affection for Avatar is at least partly just cuz he gets to fly.

yep wasn't the first and won't be the last, my point is that it's a familiar story and a simple one at that, which is why the movie is able to succeed and focus more on the amazing flying lol  though i personally don't like the fact they used that particular setup, i cannot deny that's an easy story to use if your main goal is flashy visual effects (or make a musical with a lot of long songs to drag out an otherwise shorter story...basically the same reasoning)

that said, which songs DID you like, Dark? o: i been humming a few recently, before even mentioning it here, so i'm kinda curious XD (i used to have a tape with the sound track and listened to it all the time...i loved disney music from the older classic movies in general XP)

Oh my gosh, Michael...i vaguely remember that conversation, so vaguely that i questioned whether i actually wrote those things XD hard to imagine it was that long ago >w<
