Random things in my head right now- Yesterday was Eastern Orthodox Easter (Pascha)- which is why I haven't been on for a week. I've been busy... -_-
You're Eastern Orthodox? Interesting.

I'm creating a new language. I've got most of the grammar down- now for the vocabulary..... uh oh... :unsure:
I'd start with morphology, i.e. the shape of words. Like, what syllables are available, and in what way can/can't they be used. For example few words in English can start with an x (and the ones that do are borrowed from a foreign language). And how do you make new words by putting other ones together (e.g. snow+scooter=snowscooter)
Also something to take into account is that frequently used words tend to be shorter. You could look up a list of most frequently used words in English and start by translating those.

My Aelsirian alphabet has only 22 characters - no 'c', 'g', 'x', or 'z' equivalents.

It also makes translation easier if you go with a 'roots' system - pick word roots for common, basic words, and just form your vocabulary off of those. I took the dictionary approach to translation - simply went through the dictionary and started translating the words I thought I'd need. If I ever need a new one, I just go back.

If you really want to go all out, start with a pre-language to form words. And than bastardize them into a 'modern' language.
You can also use this approach for naming people and places. Many names mean something in an older language (in their original form).

I do do that. For instance, the noun 'grave' (maiedrenenesh) is a (very) composite word. Maiedre-life (Mai- gift, edre-first), nen-negative connotation, esh (yesh)- dwelling, house. Therefore a grave is a not-life-house (or a death house). :P

Isn't that a bit long for such a common concept as grave? I wouldn't expect a composite word to be used; unless it's used euphemistically (or perhaps evolved from euphemistic use, and replaced an older word for grave).
Alternatively it might be a good word for more complex/specialized concepts such as catacombs or mausoleum.

Actually, I might say the same of "maiedre"; a composite word for something as basic as "life" is unusual. It might suggest religious/spiritual overtones (also considering that it's composed of "first gift"); which you'd then expect to be reflected in the culture that uses the language.

Actually, in my previous post I was wondering more about general rules, like:
Noun(+Adj) ; mai + edre=maiedre
Noun(+neg) ; maiedre + nen=maiedrenen
(Noun+)Noun ; maiedrenen + yesh = maiedrenenesh

So from that I'd guess a birthplace might possibly be house+first = yeshedre; even if it's not an actual word it seems to follow the morphological rules.

Nice :blink: If I ever dyed my hair I'd just put strawberry-blond highlights in, or I'd have it iridescent blue-green-purple

Be sure to post a before and after picture ;)

What colour is your hair now? And what hue of red are you thinking of giving it?

^o) :ninja: I never quite understood why anyone would want to dye hair in waky colors...

I sorta get natural but...(i used to be true blond...got darker through years...yet I still don't want to change it) B)

Although I do know someone with purple hair... her real hair color is a nice brown but somehow (w/o dye) it changed to purple... :-/

Beats ramming pieces of metal through your body, I'd say. People do all sorts of weird things.

O__O Did I just get my first cosplay? xD;;;

I had a friend with your shade of hair and did a bright red dye, but it just kind of turned mahogony/chestnut colored. And after a month of so, the top was brown again. xD

Kari, maybe your friend is an alien o_o Or an elf princess from some dream dimension.

And lol towr here I was just thinking about getting my ears pierced. 8D;

I think if I was to dye my hair, I'd want it black (it's naturally a medium brownish).

Although, while we're talking about waky colors, I'd go aquamarine with silver streaks.
