We also got a "water-resistant" notebook, helmet-light and a Gerber multi-tool+flashlight. I just hope they don't ask for all of 'em back when I leave...

Just how water-resistant? I'd like one of those. I suppose it's only resistant when closed though. Would be great to be able to write in the rain. ^_^

There are laptops/tablets which you can use underwater, if you really want waterproof computing.

Supposedly, that's a main part of the reason for the "water-resistant" design - it includes the paper. Now I haven't tested it yet, but the material they used for the paper will at least hold up better than most.

My uncle bought dad one of those space pens. Expensive stuff (and as to getting ink refills... 4-6 wks. for delivery, anyone?), but cool.
What I think is Really funny is we poured years of funding on research and testing to come up with this pen that will work at pretty much any extremes a pen CAN be used, and some it can't. How the russians solved the problem for their space program? They gave cosmonauts pencils.

That's not quite true, you know. See http://www.snopes.com/business/genius/spacepen.asp
Also note that graphite dust, pencil shavings and broken pencil leads pose a hazard in a space environment. Same reason all their food is squishy, and none is crunchy -- when hurdling around the earth several thousand miles per hour, crumbs in the electronics is hazardous to your health.

I'd use pencils. I don't like pens because I can't erase with them, and I'm not so fond of laptops for taking notes because I can't doodle and make little arrows and circles and sideways writing. And I write faster than I type.

I should know better than to make even semi-supported claims with our resident fount of knowledge. ^_-

And yeah, I like to use pencil generally myself... Though I use pen more and more lately (other than drawing. Then it's pencil first followed by inking - which is silly, considering my art isn't really worth the trouble).

You can draw and write on, e.g. the iPad see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYSRQDxeGZY It looks pretty awesome actually, because you can just zoom in and out, and move the canvas around.
On the other hand, with pencil and paper you don't have the problem that the batteries run out. But pencil does smudge a lot; many notes I made in pencil have for a large part turned into a gray smudge on the page on top of it. I think there's erasable pens as well; still, I like the look and feel of pencil.
