How about a limit of 25 words? There's now a whole book of these. http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/books/2010/10/what-can-you-do-in-twenty-five-words.html |

If a picture is worth a thousand words, would 50 drawings be acceptable too ?

Depends on the quality of the drawings.

Writing 50,000 words is easy. Writing a story and trying to get any sort of plot to stay with you through 50,000 words, in only thirty days, it so much harder.

Writing 50,000 words in 30 days? Hell yeah I can do it. NaNoWriMo or whatever half of the people I know are engrossed in is really just disgustingly easy. @Elys: Totally agree. That's why write for my brother - I have no imagination, but he does, and he has not the typing and wording, but I do. |

My problem is, about halfway through, I get stuck. I'm not sure where to go next, and I just can't make up something random. I can't trade quality of story for quantity of words- I've tried and it doesn't work. I'll go completely blank, or delete it because it doesn't fit. |

Do you just think up the story/plot as you go along, or do you start with a goal in mind as to where your story should end up? |

I have a definite beginning, but usually my full stories encompass upwards of 400 pages, all told. 50,000 only gets you to ~175 pages, depending on the font you use...so I may have an idea of where to end up, but getting there requires more than 50,000 words. |

Well, there should be some intermediate goals, usually. Maybe you can make it a trilogy (although with 3 x 50,000 words you go a bit over 400 pages again). |

I have a definite beginning and ending- the problem is my middle is usually rather shaky. Hopefully this time I won't get stuck there since the plot for this year I decided to make a little quicker paced. That is- more action, less traveling and not imperative to the plot stuff. |

One method, which may or may not work for you, is to just refine the story step by step. Just think of some major things that should happen between start and finish. And once you have those, think about slightly less major steps that would need to happen to connect those points. And keep breaking it down this way till you get at the level of simple scenes. (i.e. the snowflake method, much better explained here) |
