But it's easy to forget the event (or whatever one should call it).

Yah... I actually had to look it up to see why it's celebrated in the first place.... (only reason I remember it exists is cause I'm taking spanish- my spanish class celebrates it)

Awww, why?
... 'Cuz I kinda pre-ordered FFXIII, and somehow got talked into buying one of the numbered collectors edition hard-cover complete guide along with it back when it came out last year....

And both the guide and game are Still in the original plastic. >.<

.... Spanish class still made paper flowers for it last year (and handed them out in the front lobby)
Besides, it's just Spanish cause that's the language. We still learn the cultures of Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc.

@Dark: ..... wow, you still haven't played it? Admittedly, I've only played FFX once, but that's cause we don't have a working PS2 memory card >.<

 i just meant we wouldn't make such a big deal of it cuz it's not a holiday meaningful to us

but yeah...although, i wish my spanish classes were more keen on where they were getting their words...when you go to a spanish class and end up speaking mexican, it makes a difference XP

And yet, funnily enough it's a much, much bigger holiday in the US than Mexico (where it's only celebrated regionally).

everything is a much bigger holiday here...we even celebrate St. Patrick's Day more heavily than they do in Ireland....

i think Americans will take any excuse to celebrate ^_^

Well, after looking up why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated, the U.S. did actually have a part in the Mexican victory that Cinco de Mayo celebrates. (we helped them beat off a French invasion or something like that)

Hmm, I didn't read the wiki-article too closely, but from what I picked up the US had little to do with the actual victory -- being in the midst of the civil war and all that. However, the surprise Mexican victory in that one battle (may have) helped prevent the French helping the confederates.
But although the Mexicans may have won that battle, they lost the war and the French ruled there for something like three years before being kicked out again.

I met some Irishmen on the street in New York during St. Patrick's Day once that told me they came to America to celebrate so they could drink - apparently all the pubs in Ireland actually close that day?

One of the Blue Laws in my state is prohibition of alcohol-sales on Sunday, so my guess would be that Ireland the day before St Pat's Day would be similar to watching all the booze not-slowly and surely disappearing from all retails stores the day before Superbowl Sunday...

EDIT: Oh wait. apparently as of a few days ago, that's been altered and communities are now allowed to vote as to whether to we get Sunday booze. So I guess that'll all be past-info up there.
