Hmm... 'The Thirteenth Child' sounds interesting. Especially if it's like her other books. (Well, I suppose then it would be awesome ^_^ )
And on Gail Carson Levine.... have you read 'The Two Princesses of Bamar', 'The Wish', or 'Ever'? (the other books I've read by him besides Ella Enchanted and Fairest)

Anyway.... I'm currently reading Aurian. Finally got it for Christmas after not finding it in any libraries near me.... hopefully I can find Harp of Winds (the second book) soon....
I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Thirteenth Child' - though it appears to be the beginning of a series (Frontier Magic)
My little sis' had "The Two Princesses of Bamar' in the house, and I may get to it and Ella after finishing Fairest.
Have you read 'The Princess Academy' by Shannon Hale? DEFINITELY enjoyed that one

No, haven't read it. I have seen it before, and it looks interesting.

Am now reading Alta by Mercedes Lackey.

There being no color? And no music? And no love? I'd go nuts within a day, I would.

well i went nuts within the first paragraph ;>>

just the thought of that society drove me up the wall and then it was difficult to place myself in it to understand what was goiong on because i just wanted to rip the book to shreds (it was required reading or i wouldn't have read past the fist sentence e_e;)

I had to read a book that made me feel like that once. But I didn't really care enough about the course to risk my sanity. Of course that decision was made easier by the fact I didn't need the credits it the course was so far extracurricular it was practically extraterrestrial. But as it turned out, the professor was quite understanding and let me read something else; which, however, didn't stop me from blowing the exam completely because I was way out of my comfort zone.

Only because you'd know what you were missing. It didn't bother anyone there, so why would the concept of such a society bother you? We, in theory, could be in a similar type of situation NOW, missing out on something that, like color and music, is completely beautiful that we couldn't ever imagine being without it had we known it; or missing out on real pain and emotion as compared to what we know now... but we don't know, so we don't care; we can't care; you can't miss something you don't know to miss.

For all we know, the supernatural realm to us might be rather like we are to that society: watching incredulously, wondering how we can stand to live the way we do; missing out the way we are, missing so much of what's going on. It didn't seem like such a disturbing or far-out concept to me.

True, but like Kari said, since I do know it, I can't place myself in the book very well and understand the characters. It's....just creepy, thinking about it. The ending was rather wierd too- kind of out-there deja-vu-ish.

Me, they DID know of that world...that's why the giver has all those "memories" and the kid might not have known much of it, but he was misserable enough to know that what was going on was horrible even before he met the giver...

that was the whole point...but still i couldn't bring myself to bear it with him...i'll take Jane Eyre's troubles, but not those in the giver >.<

I do not recall him being miserable. At all. Until he got the memories. And everyone knew OF it - they hadn't a clue what it was about. That was the Giver's job.
