What was the book, incidentally?\

Being raised with manners gets in the way. Honestly, I think I'd probably be happier without them...(But then I of course couldn't get a lot of the things I've gotten thanks to manners from adults all my years.)

Manners are useful...especially for learning how to politely tell someone that they're a freakin' idiot, and that you hate their bloody guts, all without losing the smile or saying it outright. Heck, I've done that to people and they went away smiling because they thought I was complimenting them.

Manners are also the easiest way to avoid bloody knuckles. :sweatdrop:

I don't bloody my knuckles. They're calloused - after all, the people I smack have some pretty hard heads. ;)

Bloodying your knuckles? That would hurt. After all, you hit people with the palm of your hand to prevent such things.

That had to be my favorite middle-school pastime. Insulting the jerks who'd harass me such that they went away snickering because they thought I was so dumb I was being nice.

Bloody knuckles? Meh. I'm only going to hit someone if I plan to only have to hit them once. Which is fortunately not often.

Like I said...I don't bloody mine. But there is some wonderfully cathartic effect to just leanin' back and then WHALIN' somebody.

Yeah - I was the kid who was on the local chess club AND the kid who nobody messed with. Best of both worlds.

*sticks out tongue* I was the difficult little sister of my sweet older siblings.

I probably would have been more bearable if I didn't feel forced to get attention somehow from my overachieving sibs. :ermm:

I think it was a book from the series "the Famous Five" (in Dutch translation).

Huh? No, I wasn't hitting people. My knuckles were the ones being hit. Wooden things hurt. :(

It's just a matter of statistics; of the various denominations of Christianity, Catholics and Mormons tend to have the largest families.

Which of course doesn't change one bit that it can be furiously annoying when people make the wrong assumption however much they might be supported by statistics.
When I was young people that didn't know me well enough assumed I liked reading books because I was smart. So one day, on our Christmas-equivalent at school, I got a book for a present. I was so pissed, I had half a mind to burn it in the fireplace when I got home.

So the lesson to be learned here is, if it annoys you when people go "Gosh, what a large family, are you Catholics?", drag them home and burn them in the fireplace.
...
"wait...you're gonna burn us?"
"yeah....do you think i'm catholic now? "
:'( "n-no?!"
 "then i guess you're free to go" :)

(i'm not sure if i understood you correctly aboutr the book...you say they thought you didn't read because you're smart? or they thought you loved reading because you were smart?)

At the time of the Spanish Inquisition one might have almost been excused for taking that as a confirmation

The latter.

The latter.
the latter meaning the first one?

thats interesting...people tend to assume that i read because of my smarts
(most of it is wisdom from experiences and they always think i got it from a book...i mean really...where do you think the author of the book got those ideas to write it? he went through it! or knew someone who did and hadd great insight)
I have recieved a few books from people who know me not (including from family)...to this day ai have not so much as opened the cover... (except one becasue we needed to bring a book to class...i read the first few pages...)
