What's the Native American (tribe)? We're Abenaki (they're a division of the Mohawk).
If I ever get up the nerve to ask my Grandfather, I'll let you know. But I'm not suicidal yet, so...

Somehow we're Italian.

Also, as to the Irish bit, we're part of this GIANT family feud, and my brother met someone at college who's family goes WAYYY back with the side of the family we oppose. Oh, it was hilarious.

William Bradford was the governor of Plymouth Plantation for thirty-odd years. During that time, the Separatists were friends with the Wampanoag Indians, who were actually the mortal enemies of the Abenaki. Dad's descended from the Abenaki, Mom's from William Bradford. We kids...stuck right in the middle.

That puts me, by Jason's definition, as pure-blood American. It's mostly European, but there's some Slavic, a touch of Native American and a few others.
I just hate those stupid surveys that list ALL these sub-groups and we're... Caucasian. :P Middle-class white American. If I wasn't Mormon, I'd be stuck defined ONLY as part of the overwhelming majority.

That's why I always answer 'Native American' on those surveys. I have enough Native American blood to count as one - give me my land back, white man - and so I just like to mess with people's heads.

Don't look like one, tho'.

I've heard that, but I don't think you get that my grandfather would not SPEAK TO ME for along time if ever. He probably doesn't even know at this point, since he never asked his dad either, I'd bet.

Ethnicity is identity with a group of people who share the cultural traditions of a particular homeland or hearth. (I had to learn about ethnicity and race in Cultural Geography :stare: ). So I don't see why American can't be an ethnicity.

THANK YOU!!! My brother got into his only fist fight over someone calling him a "mexican injun that shouldn't be here". WE don't look a BIT mexican!!

My dad's German family came here about 80 years ago, and my mom's an immigrant, (came to the states when she was 6), so we're American, just pretty new here as far as generations go.

My grandfather did this huge family tree about ten, fifteen years back...it traced everything and everyone on my mom's side. We already knew about Bradford, but it also helped us find our ancestor who signed the Declaration of Independence.

He signed it for Connecticut - Brigadier General Oliver Wolcott, Jr.
