I use Shadow's approach. I tend to keep the keyboard to when I'm typing, and use the mouse for everything else (that way I only freeze my right hand)

Then click with the scrolly part of your mouse - it auto opens a new tab without freezing your other hand.

<considers; decides it isn't worth the trouble> I found an article on Wired News about a ... I believe it was 12-button mouse. There was a bunch of crap you had to do just to format all the keys - but it was open-source (and I think the software was on a memory chip inside the mouse) so you could FULLY customize all twelve buttons to Exactly what you want. But still. 0.0

WTF? A 12-button mouse? I grew up with two buttons and no scroll wheel!

Me too! XD I just learn things like the scrolly trick when my fingers are too numb and I start mashing things so badly I give commands.

Who needs anything but a two button mouse, really? I love Ctrl+ *insets many letters and command options* like you wouldn't believe .

I use a scroll-wheel now for convenience...but I can't believe some of the stuff they're coming out with now...

My current mouse is actually the "two-button and center scroll-wheel" variety. And I have to say, two is good. The iMac one button 'puck' wasn't as bad as a 12-button monstrosity only in terms of degree.

I use my tablet for navigation, and my stylus doesn't have a scroll-wheel. So I've get left-click, right-click and double-left-click.

Anyway, to see small text I just hit my "desmall" bookmarklet, and then it's no longer small. Maybe I'll put it in a greasemonkey script, then I don't even need to do that.
