Chinese is like a lot of vowels strung together? That's funny, cause mom keeps complaining that Russian is a bunch of consonants stuck together.

vowels stuck together? 是吗? <shrug> And what's so bad about the grammar? Unless you get into the writing, it's all caveman speak! No articles, no tenses...

Nono, that's the point - I like Chinese because of the LACK of grammar.

My teacher spelled 'thank you' 'xie xie', but I don't think there's any particular 'right' or 'wrong' spelling for Anglicized versions of Chinese words.

There is what's called pinyin romanization that a lot of dictionaries, text books and such use so there IS some standard, but yeah.
It takes adjusting to, and will often do weird things to how you try to pronounce unfamiliar words and names you see from then on, I try to associate just the sound to the meaning (and eventually the character) as much as possible.

There is? Well, there goes my idea.

What is 'Pinyin', exactly? My Chinese teacher mentioned it a couple times, but I never did get an official definition for it...

Well the 'yin' I'm guessing is 音 which has to do with sound, and if I had to guess, I'd say the 'pin' is 拼 which I've only seen in the context of "怎么拼?" or "how do you spell that?"

Edit: just checked my pinyin dictionary, and I guessed right. Woot! So it's something like 'spelling sound'

'xie xie' is one example. Some average English speaker would use 'sh' rather than the 'x' 'hao' which sounds like 'how' ... Like I said, it uses a different set of pronunciation rules.

*shrugs* It made sense when my teacher explained it (using the 'xie xie' and all that). I'll hafta take your word for it, though - I've never been an expert in any language, so I won't claim to be in one of which I've barely scratched the surface.

<shrug> I'm no expert by any means. But I make up for it, or rather appear to to a great extent, by how much I love the language. :D

"I'm no expert, but I make up for it with plenty of coffee-drinking."

I think I remember that from Dilbert somewhere.

 Dilbert.. is banned in my dad's workplace. Namely because they had someone who looked (and acted) just like the pointy haired boss and EVERYONE had Dilbert calenders and mugs and everything for the sheer lulz of it.
