Yeah, my sis' Chinese roommates could understand each other, but her other Chinese friends not so much. They explained it's pretty much a different language more than a dialect. (this is when I decided I wasn't taking Chinese )Speak for yourself, Jason. I still have a month to go.

Are you kidding? Spanish is way easier than any other language I've tried to learn. Including English. |

Sure it is, it's pretty easy all things considered, it's the memorizing the vocabulary that's killing me. I don't have the time. |

Only vocab we ever had to memorize was what we used in class. Which was pretty easy - I use it; I remember it.

Eh? Cuantos palabras estaban para su clase? Tengo quinientos, mas o menos (y no me gusta vocabulario). xP |

That's it? We were using Spanish for everything - including general conversation during class. So we just used everything. |

Well, yeah. I'm not talking about the basic sentences and all the lovely words that come with that; verbs, adjectives, or any of those. I'm talking extra-curricular nouns. NOUNS. XP I can form sentences and all that quite easily without knowing how to say "tulips" and "water skiing." But Prof is big on making us use the obscure vocab on top of the day-to-day interaction; which is what's killing me. |

We only use what we need. If we need something new - that's what a Spanish-English dictionary is for!

What makes it even more interesting is the fact it's still the same written language (especially as I can still actually tell whether a writer is Cantonese or Mandarin speaking given a large enough sample of the writing). Freaky stuff. But I LOVE it!

The coolest thing? Chinese jokes/riddles. Most of 'em don't work in written form, because they're puns based on using different characters with the same pronunciation. Took a long time to get a handle on their sense of humor in general, too... |

They have a sense of humor? ![]() Just kidding. But they don't seem to laugh at most of the things we do. Prolly 'cause every joke I make is cultural without knowing it.
